Hello everyone,

I'm in the process of assembling a Kyosho P-40 Warhawk. I would be interested in painting the plastic landing gear wells, mechanism housing and the skirting running back from the cowling under the wing.

Unfortunately, these items are not colored (gray) and, in my opinion, would look kind of strange if not painted to match the underside of the aircraft.

Question, what paint would you use to paint these items and, if any of you have already done this, how did you go about matching the color to the covering?

If you have any specific suggestions, please give me the type of paint and not just the brand. I live in France and we may not have the specific brandnames that you use elsewhere.

Thanks,
Zipperneck

I pulled all the original covering off and am recovering with one I can paint. I going to use LusterKote primer, colors and flat clear. One of the motivating factors for this is that there have been many reports of horizontal elevator failures. The stock covering is very weak and lends no strength to the structure. After taking the covering off I can see why. The balsa used is not that good and the joints are not very well constructed. In fact, I am going to have to fill and reglue several areas.

As Mr. Bill would say, Ohhhh Noooooo!

Seems odd to hear of that sort of thing with Kyosho. A friend of mine had a horizontal stab rip off in mid-flight on a Jamara Spitfire. Apparently, that problem has been discussed here before.

True, the covering isn't the best, and I figured I would eventually end up recover it when needed (argh)... but not straight out of the box (double argh). Any idea on how you will handle the plastic trim pieces?

Hey
Must be something in the Kyosho process that ripped th e left side of the wing from the center section in a moderately tight turn in my 1 st Corsair. Hobby Services was nice enough to provide a replacement and some friends got me a second when that one was destroyed in the trunk of my car on 9/11/01. It has been pure joy since...just needs some extra attention where they use what I think and they deny is hot glue.
Apparently this is an industry practice to make production as fast and of course cheap as possible.

The color of the pieces is more scale than the original covering....but if the color of the pieces too far off the paint I get then I'll primer and paint them as well. I'm pretty sure the parts are ABS plastic so I'll only put the first primer coats on in very light coats. Once primered the color paint should not hurt it. However, from what I understand, Lusterkote is pretty plastic friendly anyway.

Well, I may just install 'em like they are and worry about that if I ever recover it in the future. Thanks for your input.

Hi Zipperneck,

On ABS mouldings I initially coat them in Prymol which is an etching primer. This dries within a few minutes but does give off strong fumes so use in a well ventilated area. Flair model fuel-proofed paints offer a good rang of gloss and matt colours which can be mixed if required.

At present I'm painting an ABS 3D fun-fly cowl with Humbrol enamel paint (you could also use enamel radiator paint) again using Prymol as a base primer. You can see that the cowl will require 2 coats for an effective covering. Yhe enamel paint will be fuel-proofed with a good quality polyuethene matt varnish!

Has anyone tried the new Fusion Paint from Krylon??? It claims to chemically bond to plastic.
