I'd love to but....a few years ago I read it was $1,700.00 hour, probably now even higher. Then again that lets you say "I've flown a Mustang" for those hangar flying talk sessions.

There was a great article in Smithsonian Air and Space (I think) several years ago about Stallion 51. It was a very good read.

I have been up in a 51, if you can afford it, it is an interesting experience.

My son and I are going in June. From what I have been told and read. If you have the money to do it I would suggest you to do it. I have flown a mustang when I was in the Air force flying. My son is a pilot now and he too wants a chance to fly one of these great flying machines. So we are off to stallion 51 this summer.

I was lucky

The company I fly for gave us some unusual attitude training in the Stallion 51 Not only was it fun and I got my hands on the controls. I learned a tremendous amount. Lee the owner is a great guy. He was Arnold Palmers Chief Pilot at one time. He has a very good preflight and post flight briefing. A video of the flight is provided and is used to critique the flight. My wife got the takeoff on tape and I put it at the beginning of the flight tape. Its an awesome time. The power is just great. Its hard to believe 18 yr old kids in WWII were flying these P-51s.

His Hangar is another thing to take notice of. You can eat off the floor. Heck you could eat off the wheel wells of all the planes in there. Its a classy operation

Got about a 20 min ride in Gunfighter (Loop & Roll included) for $250 bucks. That was the best ride I have ever been on.

You get lot more bang for the buck going up in a pitts or an extra, or doing simulated combat. What you're paying for in a P-51 is more about the entry in your logbook then it is about having fun flying an airplane. However, if anyone is in the market for a P-51 I know a guy that builds them www.sq1aviation.com

Ty, Your so wrong on this one. There is nothing like sitting behind a Merlin on a low high speed pass and then pulling up and getting 4000ft of vertical and rolling out at the top. There is nothing else like flying a high powered warbird and I wish I could still afford it. I have a Mustang LOA but theres just not many people who will let you fly thier airplane anymore. I have a lot of time in a Pitts and CEII but just like the sensation and thrill you get from flying a warbird. Don

Don, I guess it's a matter of oppinion... I have not flown a P-51 so I can't claim to be an expert. But I do fly with a guy that flew combat in a Hurricane and has owned several warbirds including a P-51.... today he owns a Pitts and flys it 3 times a week... I fly with him because he lost his medical and he doesn't care to talk on the radio. His favorite airplane in the world is a Pitts. But he also likes to tumble and push high negative G's, so I guess this airplane just fits his needs better. My suggestion to someone who is looking to go for a fun flight in an airplane is to save a thousand bucks and go up in an aerobatic bird... No one is going to let you fly the P-51 like it was designed to be flown... it's just too expensive to push them.

Ty, Just yankin your chain a little bit. I agree doller for doller you can't beat a Pitts or an Extra. I loved to do hard aerobatics 10 years ago but now a loop and roll or a cuban is just fine for me. The Pitts was not the most comforatable airplane in the world and I now have a Nanchang CJ-6. Does nice smooth aerobatics is comfy in the cockpit burns 14 gph and has a rond motor. A lot more bang for the buck than my T-6 I used to own. Don't ever pass up the chance to fly a fighter though. it's a real experience. Don

Hey all
I rode in the Stallion in the fall of 2002. WHAT A RUSH!!! I had just got my pilots license that winter and the wife treated me to the ride of a lifetime while I was treating to her to a magical trip to Disney. I HIGHLY reccomend doing this if you are in the least bit buffy on warbirds.
