Some of you know that I am have no idea what I am doing when it comes to these small electric planes....I am trying to make a parts list of the materials to make the BEST combo for the SHOCK FLYER......

I have found out that I can get the NIPPY BLACK motors from HOBBY LOBBY, so now I need to know how to power this little motor....What battery, ESC, and prop for the 0508/73. Never having flown these small electrics, I am assuming that you have a small battery for the RX and one for the motor? I will also need a charger for LIPOs...any suggestions.

I am thinking of using a BERG receiver and have been told to use the CIRRUS 5.4 servos....After doing a little research on the servos, I have found that CIRRUS has some 4.4 servos that are a tad lighter, but have a little more torque at the expense of .020 seconds in speed.....What do you guys think? Would the 5.4s be better or the 4.4s? I personally like the idea of the extra torque.....I do not think the speed issue would be that noticeable.

Any information you can give me would be greatly appreciated.....ALSO, please include the web site or vendor for the products.

One more thing, are you using 1 or 2 servos on elevator and ailerons?

The CC 10 would work excellent with that motor.

Any of the following batts would work also, it's mostly a matter of personal preference and weight.

E-tec 3s1p 1200
Kokam 3s1p 1500
E-tec 3s1p 700
Kokam 3s1p 340

Hopefully someone else will jump in with setup suggestions, I don't have one yet.

Jason

I have heard that TANIC batteries will short term discharge 20 times their capacity....problem is I have only seen them in 1100ma, anyone know if they make 300 to 500ma 2 or 3 cell batteries.

One important point, overlooked by the first two respondents - your ESC will have a BEC built in(Battery eliminator circut to supply 5v power from the single flight battery to the receiver and servos), so there is no need of a second battery to supply the Rx [as you would need in a glow plane].

The Apache 1500 (1-4 cells) is an ideal LiPoly charger.

Servos - Cirrus are fine but GWS Pico BB (5.6g) are cheaper and would work just as well.

Either the Berg 4-channel (Stamp) or the 5-channel Rx would be an excellent choice.

Kokam 340SHC 3s will give you 340mAh capacity, and perhaps 6.8A (all for 30g), but even if you go to 3s2p 680SHC you've still only got 60g battery weight and ample current draw. E-tec 700's (4.2A capable @ 6C) will be stretched to supply 5A (though there are apparently new E-tecs with 7.5C capability?). The 1200's mentioned would be fine, but heavier.

For just 2g more on the motor you can get the Nippy Black 0808/98. More versatility down the road. Just a thought!

Cheers, Phil

I could give you a string of URL's but just search under the product name and you'll find everything somewhere!

Jeff

I have one setup with a Typhoon Micro 6 brushless and their ESC, $110.00.

I used the 4.4 servos you mentioned.

2S 340 SHC Lithiums

GWS micro RX

I don't recall exactly how much it weighs but 8ozs comes to mind for an AUW ready to fly.

Loads of fun... Enough torque from this beast to twist the nose right of the front of this model...

Thanks for the responses guys....

Michael, I thought about the Typhoon, but only after I ordered the NIPPY BLACK

Here is what I am going with......

Nippy 0508
Castle Creation Pheonix 10 ESC/BEC
Berg 4 RX
Kokam 3s 340
Cirrus 4.4
GWS 10x4.7 and 11x4.7 props

I am thinking of getting the TRITON charger.....anyone have a better idea?

triton is good charger, my opinion for parts for your shockflyer m5 fma reciever its small light and dual conversion! fmadirect.com ( they also have kokam lipos )

servos i'd definatly go with the gws pico. at horizonhobby.com they are $11.38 a piece but on backorder but i called them and asked them when theyed get some and they said this week.

look for the combo on the nippy black motor you want you can save around 10 bucks if you buy them together. hobbylobby.com has those combos

hobby lobby has a new shockflyer " how to" page showing the a good way to install an axi motor.

check it out.

I don't think we ever shot any video of it. I'll see.

We had a few problems with it at first, Josh busted into hover on the maiden and accelerated up and out and literally wrapped the motor around the fuse on 3S 11.1V cells!!!

The motor mounting required a little more thought than Josh invested initially... Kids!

Any how we were not too impressed with it initially, and decided it must be too heavy with the batteries we were trying (Etec 3S-1200's). So we eventually tried the 2S 340SHC and it was a whole new model. Unfortunately it left the hangar on the wrong model memory on a recent rainy day and was damaged beyond its worth. Were going to put another model together soon.

Its a good flying model if it’s light!!! If not its nothing to get excited about. The only complaint I have is it’s not very stout, its made of 2mm Depron. But if you fly and use it as was intended when designed (indoor use) it’s an excellent 3D flyer. It may not be the best model for entry level pilots either. There are lots of durable foamies out there that are much easier to have instant 3D gratification with IMO...
