talking about the columbia?

during the takeoff i was joking with friends saying "this one ain't gonna make it". right before the re-entry i was also laughing about them burning up. made me feel sick when it really did happen.

reminds me of the film "armageddon" when steve buschemi says something like "we're sitting in a machine loaded with 5 million pounds of explosive fuel and it's all built by the lowest bidder". all of a sudden it rang true. i haven't really followed up on what really happened and who knew what but i do think that nasa needs to get its act together if they want to continue with the shuttle program.

They say that the foam piece that fell opened the leading edge enough for gas to get in. May have caused structural damage, may have caused a tire to explode, but in all cases, not a good thing. I didn't believe it, but talked to my friend that designed the airframe and he said it sounded like the best expanation. Sux that a piece of foam could do that. They have had them come off before. Should have fixed that problem. All in all, it really bites.

I was working on my thesis for my masters.
When I saw the !QUOT!foam!QUOT! piece being questioned a few hours later, I felt it was likely they had a breach int he wing.

For the foam, it is kinda like the dropping a penny from the Empire State building theory, doesn't look like it could do much, but actually can go through a hood of a car. That piece of foam was traveling at more than 200 mph and meeting a wing at 300 mph. That piece of foam resembled a brick being thrown through a plate glass window.

The guys in suites were !QUOT!amazed!QUOT! at the test results when this scenario was tested at Texes A&M. The foam cut through the wing like a hot knife through butter.

Too bad the higher management at NASA never took physics, or liked gambling too much if they did, we would have had an Apollo 13 scenario where we may have abandoned a shuttle but may have saved a crew.

I watched a special on the Challenger last night. Same thing, problem was identified and a warning was sounded but was stopped half way through the management chain. Until we get rid of the layers of suites in NASA, I don't for see our space program being too successful.

Yeah, I know where I was that day. I had some bad luck too (nothing like them though). My daughter was taking a babysitting class at the hospital and we went to pick her up. On the elevator ride down to the basement (where the class was) there was a sudden jolt and the elevator stopped. We sat there for about 4 minutes and decided to call (with the elevator phone) and tell someone we were stuck. My wife said to the operator that we were stuck in the elevator. I was listening close and will never forget the operators response - "FOR REAL?!?!?!". 25 minutes later we were climbing down a step ladder to the basement of the hospital. My daughter was a little embarrassed in the class when the teacher said, "your folks will be a little late picking you up, they're stuck in the elevator....".

I was out on the ramp working on an airplane. I heard the loud boom but thought nothing of it as Southwest Airlines comes into Love field in masses. The runway is a stones throw from our ramp. I thought it might have been a tire blowing or a compressor stall upon TR deployment. I went inside to get something ( a tool) a few minutes later and someone told me the shuttle burned up on re-entry. I thought they were joking. I went outside and looked up in dis-belief. All I saw was a huge trail of smoke from the WNW sector to ESE sector. We were all kind of really scared as we didn't know what or if anything would fall on us. Turns out that a tile fell 3 blocks from my house, and I found some wire and a rivet head in front of my house. I used to have the caution tape from when all the investigators had my house roped off, but have since tossed it!! Kind of hit really close to home. It virtually happened right over our heads. From what I hear they are still finding pieces in East Texas to this day!!

WOW, LearjetMech, that really is close to home literally. I can't imagine what it must be like to actually see debris falling in person. The replays on tv are horrible enough.

Actually they proved on Mythbusters (Discovery channel) that a penny thrown from the Empire State Building has a terminal velocity (negating wind currents, etc.) of ~64.5 mph.

They actually tested this by shooting concrete and a balistics gel dummy head to see what would happen and it just bounced off. They even shot each other with their penny shooting contraption! It was quite funny.

I remember waking up and flipping channels on the TV before I saw footage on some channel of the Challenger catastrophe and thinking it might be a documentary or new information they'd uncovered. When in fact it was just their own little tasteless flashback of what happened before, before switching to a replay of the Discovery burning up. Ended up watching the news for most of the day. Was going to work on my big Extra to...
