i found a wall charger in a box that only says 7.2volt 1-4hour quick charger. on the back it says under output 9vdc 500ma. is 500ma the output for one hour? the make is pti. i foound no info on the net so i am hoping someone here has one or is familiar with this general type of charger.

The 500mA output is continuous, as long as it plugged into the wall it's charging... Teh 1-4 hour note is based on the size battery under charge. If it was 1000mAh battery it would require two hours to charge if the battery was completley discharged.

The 500 mA is what the charger will deliver at a voltage of 9 volts (or in that range). If it is connected to a battery that has a higher charge voltage then the 500 mA will decrease, lower charge voltage and it will increase. If you measure the open circuit voltage and the short circuit current you will get a pretty good idea of the voltage current relationship. It is not exactly a straight line but in most cases good enough for our work.

Along these lines i have a 12 volt 4.5 A battery for my field box. It is recommended to charge at 500 MaH for 6 hours. How can I determine what other rates of chargers will work. Also do they have to be 12 volt chargers?

Thanks
