Larry, Sorry you had problems with the CJ's. I think Tom has also. I've got them in a Pica 190D9 that has made only 5 flights but 3 of them where dead sticks and very hard landings. It weighs 13lbs. Don't remember anything about pins or JB welding anything. It sucks when you put your heart and soul into a project and things like that go wrong. Hang in there you'll get it noodled out.

2) On the lighter side,,,why on war birds do they paint a great camouflage scheme so enemy planes can't
see them, then paint bright red, yellow, etc bands on them?

The Third Reich was invaded in late 1944 and early 1945 when the Dora was ready for combat, so the missions where basically for defense duties. This colored and bright bands on war birds where painted in order to prevent this doras where shot down by means of AA friendly fire.

I just finished painting the red on my 80 inch Holman D9. Looks pretty cool with the white stripes.

I'm doing Red 1. There are a few pics in my Holman D9 thread in the Warbirds section. None with color applied, though.

Thanks Randy, I'll get it up. It's ready to go but been busy with house stuff and after the maiden flight, my heart just isn't into trying it again at this time. I've been busy with building a Phaeton 90 when time allows but one of these days, I'll take the FW out to the field when I can have the field to myself and give it another try. If I do have problems with the Century Jets again, they come out and Spring Airs go in. Larry

Larry, Don't blame you a bit for replacing them if another problemn arises. It seems that their product is inconsistent and the is no reason for it that I can think of. Anyway good luck with our next attempt. Randy

G'day guys
My TF D9 is nearly ready to paint again after extensive repairs were carried out. This time I have ordered the Skyshark fiberglass cowl instead of the Stansfibertech Pica style cowl. Does anyone know if this cowl is any larger than the Pica cowl. I hope it is. The Pica cowl was a little small, but was fairly scale.
Great looking D9 Richard.

Toz.

Excellent rendition of the FW190d-9. I have a Pica 190d-9 that weights 10.5 lbs without retracts. Powered is provided by an HB .61 PDP engine swinging a 12x6 Zinger propeller.
At this weight the aircraft flies fine with the engine installed. I can't understan why your .91 does not provide adequate power for takeoff.

Larry, How is progress going on the repair and are you going to give the CJ"s another chance or did you change them out?

Hi Randy, Luckily, I didn't have to repair, just replace the bent pins and that has been done. I did keep the CJ's in for another try but I just haven't had the time or inclination to take it out and fly it. I've been working on a Phaeton 90 and am about 3/4 done on it. I don't want to take the FW out and have problems with that and have another plane on the boards so I'll wait until the Phaeton 90 is finished then take them both out. We've had problems here at home with my girlfriends teenage daughter that really I haven't been in the right frame of mind to concentrate on the FW at this time. I've found if I go to the field knowing my plane will fly, it will. If I go thinking I'll have problems, I will have problems. And besides, the plane looks so damn good I hate to see anything happen to it. LOL

G'day Guys
For anyone wanting to use a Skyshark fiberglass Cowl on a TF FW190D-9, the fit is quite good with only slight modification of the nose ring. This cowl is much more scale looking than the plastic ABS supplied with the kit. Pictures of new cowl coming soon.

Been a long time since being on here. Well, today was the big day I gave the TF FW190 a try again. Short story, didn't go far. We have about a 150 foot paved runway and I lined up on the end, gave it full throttle and watched as it took the lengh of the runway to gain speed without lifting off. By the time I cut back on the throttle the plane had gone into tall grass and did some minor damage. Nothing that can't be fixed very easily. The mounting bolts for the wing sheered off and the wing went one way and the fustlage went another without a scratch on the wing. No damage to the retracts. There were several members of our club there and we all came up with the same conclusion, not enough power. The OS 90 could not get it up to flying speed. I plan on putting in a 120 Saito and if that doesn't do the trick, then the plane will be a ceiling fixture. By the way, I did finish my Phaeton 90 and that plane flies great.

Larry,

Please give us some advice for balance with that Saito, I am planning to put a YS 120 on mine.

Tozdezignz,

What about Skyshark fiberglass Cowl? Can you share some pics?

Tozdezignz, Balance?? The Saito 120 is heavier then the OS 91 but with the 91 I had to add weight so when I went to the Saito 120 I just had to take some weight out. I did this today. I took the plane out in the yard and set the idol this evening and if I get a chance this week I'll give it a try. I didn't use the Skyshark fiberglass cowl, I used one from Fiberglass Specialties. Fiberglass Specialties is similar to the Top Flite one except a lot stronger.

Well today was the day. Unfortunately, I put it back into kit form. At least the wing. When the plane lifted off, it got very unstable and I couldn't hold it level and it snapped into the ground with quite a bit of damage. If I wanted, I could see if I could get another wing kit. The fuselage can be fixed. I'm not sure what happened except that I know it had to much weight for that size of wing. One thing, I was not happy at all with the top flite kit and will never build another. Next time, I'll try the Skylard kit.

Sad, to hear that Larry! All that effort and all you have to show for it, is a box of sticks. Hang in there and better luck with your next attempt. Randy

Sorry to hear about your experience Larry. I know where you are coming from because I have been there myself!

If you are interested, I will sell you a Skyshark Kit less the cowl (if you still already have one) for $65.00. The only thing you need to do is post an honest comparison with the Top-Flite kit from start to finish. The Century Jets won't fit in our plane but the Spring Airs will. You can use your .91 and I promise it will lift off and fly well!

If you are interested, email me at mgrey@skysharkrc.com

Hello friends,

Which cowl is the better scale match for the Top Flite FW? Stans Fibertech, Fiberglass Specialties, Pica, Skyshark?

Also which is the better gun hood?

Thanks a lot for your help.

G'day Guys
Sorry I havn't replied fo a while as I have been on an European vacation with my familly. I am nearly finished with repairs to my TF Dora. I have made a few of changes such as using a Skyshark 3 blade Spinner and Cowl. The spinner is great. Very Scale looking. I also took a lot of weight out of the tail. The paint is JV44 ROT 1. I think I did a pretty good job of it. I dont have any pics yet, but I will have some soon. I am going to try to have a real ME262 in the background as I live close to Paine Field WA where they are building new 262's. I hope I can convince them to allow me to take some shots.

G'day Tom
I agree about the RED 1. Great colour scheme. I will give it to the Germans, they certainly know how to paint an airplane. Almost finished the repairs and won't be long till first flight again. I vitually destroyed the model about a year ago when the radio switch on the model vibrated open just after completing my first left turn after take off and after U/C was retracted (lucky. If it wasn't I would have destroyed the wing as well). The model just turned on its back and under full power and ploughed into the trees on the far side of the field. It took 3 of us 2 hrs to actually locate the model. My decision at that time was to throw away the model until I later examined the damage. It was repairable. Check the pics attached.
Tom!! Tell me the best way to do the white german text on the left side of the fuse. I am having trouble printing white. Do you have a method of reproducing the graphic.
Regards
Toz

I made a stencil for the slogan. I printed it out on card stock. My wife spent three hours cutting out the letters. Minutes after she was done, I sprayed the back of the stencil with spray on adhesive. After I got it positioned on the Dora, I carefully pressed down all the outines of the letters. After that I lightly sprayed on the white. Lightly, being the key word !!!

Your Dora is smaller than mine. This technique may not work for you.

I plan on building Red 13 next. Going to do the same thing on it.
