OK, is it just me or is the cowl shape for WH TriPacer all wrong? It seems to be too square on the front profile.

I was thinking exactly the same thing....

Yes, a little to square?[X(]

touch and go -> RE: Piper Tri-Pacer from Wendell Hostetler is now here!! (8/10/2007 9:19 PM)

In response to Trisquire: In order to convert Wendell's Tripacer design to a Pacer, i.e. a conventional gear airplane, I lengthened the main gear, I moved the main gear forward so that the axle is even with the leading edge of the wing and I turned the main gear around 180 degrees from the way shown on the plans (as you can probably tell, I fabricated the main gear by bending some 1/4 steel rod and then doing a bit of welding). I changed the fuse shape by keeping the bottom of the fuse box shaped further forward than shown on the plans (in other words, not starting the nose taper on the bottom until closer to the front of the fuse) and by making the tail lighter to offset the lack of the weight of a nose gear and wheel. To make the tail lighter I made the stabs, the elevators and the rudder open framework rather than solid balsa as shown on the original plans. Finally, I also modified the fiberglass cowling by cutting off the protrusion on the bottom.

HERE`S ACOUPLE OF PICS OF MY ALMOST FINISHED TRI PACER, I BOUGHT THE LANDING GEAR WIRE AT THE HOBBY SHOP AND TOOK DRAWINGS FROM PLANS AND HAD A FRIEND TO BEND THE GEAR AT A MACHINE SHOP,LESS THAN 10 DOLLARS.
THE COWLING WAS NOT AVAILABLE IN LESS THAN 3 MONTHS SO BEING EXPERIENCED IN FIBERGLASS FAB WORK I BUILT A TOOLING PLUG AND POPPED A MOLD OFF IT.
NOW I CAN BUILD AS MANY COWLS AS I WANT, IF ANYONE IS INTERESTED 50 DOLLARS PLUS SHIPPING WILL BUY ONE. RCM

drdoom -> RE: Piper Tri-Pacer from Wendell Hostetler is now here!! (8/24/2007 7:15 PM)

Nice job on that cowl. Looks great.

musterpilot -> RE: Piper Tri-Pacer from Wendell Hostetler is now here!! (8/25/2007 4:24 AM)

on the full size there is a bit more work than just turning the main gear arround and a lot of $ on the model it was just a matter of setting the mains in the right position and a cowel mod

harleywings -> RE: Piper Tri-Pacer from Wendell Hostetler is now here!! (8/28/2007 5:46 AM)

Can you make a cowling for a 1/4 scale tripacer ??? if so what would you need from me??? I have been waiting since 1/07 for cowl and 5/07 for other parts that were promissed from the manufacture of the 1/4 scale Tri-Pacer kit.

rcm243 -> RE: Piper Tri-Pacer from Wendell Hostetler is now here!! (9/1/2007 7:49 PM)

HARLEY WINGS, TO BUILD A 1/4 SCALE COWL I WOULD NEED A PART TO USE AS A TOOLING PLUG SAY A PLASTIC COWL WHICH I COULD MAKE THE MOLD FROM, OR MAKE THE PLUG FROM SCRATCH AS I DID ON MY 33%
THERE`S A LOT OF WORK INVOLVED IN MAKING A MOLD FROM A PATTERN OR PLUG, IN MY CASE I`VE GOT 6 COWLS SOLD SO IT HAS ALMOST BEEN WORTH THE EFFORT TO BUILD A MOLD. LET ME KNOW IF YOU CAN COME UP WITH A PLASTIC COWL LIKE THE ONES THAT COME IN KITS. RCM

musterpilot -> RE: Piper Tri-Pacer from Wendell Hostetler is now here!! (9/17/2007 4:11 AM)

Harleywings I have a mould that I made for my pacer , but I don't know if it would fit your model , also the cost of getting it to you would be to great maybe you can get one made local, my plans came out of a rcme book can't remember what year

harleywings -> RE: Piper Tri-Pacer from Wendell Hostetler is now here!! (9/24/2007 6:13 AM)

Thanks for the info. I'm so pissed off at the at the company I bought the kit from. I sent back a defective cowl that came with the kit 1/10/07. I will continue building and wishing for my cowling. I managed to make a nice pair of wheel pants for the plane I may luck out and build a plug or some type of frame I can glass.

Harleywings, my brother is building a 1/4 Tri-Pacer from Vince Miller plans and he has a very nice glass cowling for it. Not sure if it came from one of the fiberglass companies or if it came from Vince Miller Plans but I can ask him if you're interested in trying to source another cowling.

harleywings -> RE: Piper Tri-Pacer from Wendell Hostetler is now here!! (9/27/2007 9:15 PM)

yes please anything would help. in a day or two I will take the measurements and leave another note and we can go from there. THANK YOU.

musterpilot -> RE: Piper Tri-Pacer from Wendell Hostetler is now here!! (9/29/2007 3:08 AM)

A few pics of the tri-pacer with the tail wheel conversion full size

harleywings -> RE: Piper Tri-Pacer from Wendell Hostetler is now here!! (9/30/2007 6:07 AM)

I took the plans back out and took these measurements, from the end to end 8 7/8" and 8 1/8" wide the lenght could be as long as 9" and still work. If this is close please let me know.

THANK YOU

that is a very nice model a great credit to you

bananaman -> RE: Piper Tri-Pacer from Wendell Hostetler is now here!! (2/22/2009 6:05 AM)

Looking at doing this one, converting to a tail dragger as the full size was, and doing aerotow as well. Its a great aircraft and the colour scheme is a beauty.

tom barnes -> RE: Piper Tri-Pacer from Wendell Hostetler is now here!! (5/28/2009 3:34 AM)

I HAVE JUST STARTED A HOSTETLER 33% TRI-PACER AND WOULD LIKE TO SHARE NOTES WITH ANYONE WHO IS BUILDING OR HAS BUILT THIS PLANE. I HAVE THE SIDES FRAMED AND SHEETED.  ALSO, DOES ANYONE KNOW OF A PLAN SET TO BUILD THE FRONT OLEO STRUT FROM SCRATCH.

I RECIEVED THE PLANS (BEAUTIFUL ) IN 3 DAYS, THE COWL IN 5 DAYS FROM FIBERGLASS SPECIALTIES. EXCELLANT WORKMANSHIP.

Bill Diedrich -> RE: Piper Tri-Pacer from Wendell Hostetler is now here!! (5/28/2009 4:29 AM)

Hi Tom are you building this from a kit that has been cut or you cutting it all
yourself?  This one is in the near future for me, have had the plans for a couple
years now.

Glad to see this thread get some new life!  The Tri Pacer has long been one of my favorite planes, and I started Wendell's 1/3 scale version three years ago.  It is now framed up entirely, with the exception of the struts, and installing the rear upper fuselage formers and stringers.  (The formers are built and ready to install.)

I have suffered some burn out, I guess, and probably will not finish this plane.  I have a YW48B2 engine, both the main and the Sierra nose gear, a spinner, the cowl.  I will let this all go for $990, which is a little less than I have in the engine alone.  The build is straight, and follows the plans as drawn.

If there is an interest, my phone is (765)358-4012, and the best time to contact is noon to 7PM.
