Hi everybody,

Back in 3D flying forum, people convinced me for building a SPAD 3D. I made a quick search and I found following items.

Could you please tell me if I can built the SPAD 3D or PQHOR without changing the original plans with shorter wing spans.
And I think I should re-arrange the thickness of the wing since I have thicker coroplast ( 6 mm ).

1- Policarbon sheet 6 mm thick ( couldn't get 4 mm ) which is 29" by 40". That means I can only have a wing span of 29".

2- 0,40 o.s. FP engine.

3- kitchen cutting plastic.

4- Aluminum rail ( U shaped but a little bit narrow )

5- Aluminum sheet 1/2" wide.

6-Some PVC (scarped)

7- Some piano wires.

8- 4 - Hitec 311 servos

9- receiver battery pack (new enough) and 1 receiver,
10 - I have no landing gear material at the moment (sure I will get something).

What do you think now. is this plastic too much (and heavy), and for 29" wing span 0.40 motor is too much. Or can I use sheet in other way ( I mean Can I place the flutes vertical). Will the wing be folding immediately?

Help will be appreciated. Thank you all in advance.

Regards.

The origonal QHOR was 30" WS and used a .20-.30 engine. If your coro is really stiff (I imagine 6mm is) you should be able to eliminate the MW in the wing. It will probably make up for the weight difference in the coro. Some people have the .40 FP on the small WS planes. If you build it with a 29" WS, you will only be giving up 16" in wing area that can probably be made up with another 3/4" in the cord. Use 5/32" MW for the landing gear and small ultralight wheels. If your servos dont fit into the channell, you can mount them on the sides. Remember, these planes arent designed to fly fast so manage your throttle.

If it were me, I would try it. If you want the SPA3D, use the small QHOR dimensions and the SPA3D build technique.

Novabill,

I just started building it, Wing is 29" x 20", with a OS .40 FP, As you suggested qhor sized spa3d.

We will see, how it does, I am thinking of using 12,25" x 3,75 prop. Will it be good or Should I use something like 10x6.

I think plane will be a bit tail heavy due to the 6mm. coroplast. I have no idea what it should weight.

I think I will also have some orientation problems since coro is transparent. It is better if I cover it maybe... I will also use shorter fuse ( it will be 30"

It is fun project if it flies I will be glad.

Regards.

I'm thinking an 11x4 or 11x5 and they will be 1/2 the price of the 12.25x3.75.
Do'nt worry about balance until you install the radio gear and if it is still tailheavy you can slide the wing back to compensate. Hopefully you can come in around 4#, but I had a 36" that flew well at 5.5#. You save weight with MW landing gear, ultra light wheels, no tail wheel, just a skid and lightening on the motor mount, leave the spinner off and if the wing is really stiff with the 6mm leave out the MW in it. Just be really careful the first few flights and watch for flapping wings. It will fly, do'nt worry about that. And boy will it roll fast too.

Zafer

My first airplane built it with 4mm POLICARBON because the only coroplast that there is here in Argentina is of 2mm.
After several flights the Policarbon and the hinges began to break.
After a lot to look for I finally got coroplast in 4mm.
I suggest you that you make a search in the forum, to see if there is some member of your country and he can inform you where to buy coroplast

BTW good job.

Go here:

http://www.spadtothebone.com/SPAD/Mufflers/

and read about Mousse Can Mufflers. Put one
of these on that OS40FP and you will be
making nearly as much power as a 46 motor,
and with better throttle response.

Been there ... done that.

The problem with "POLICARBON" or Dupont's "LEXAN" (know as polycarbonite), is when fuel gets on it, the nitro in the fuel will make it brittle. I tried 1/2" thick Lexan for an engine mount and only lasted 1 month before it cracked.

Sorry to tell you this.

I'm really hard on my spads.
They are lucky to last a month

Hi again,

My spa3d is % 90 finished, Here is another photo,

As the whole forum suggested, I have started to look for coroplast in Switzerland and neighboring Germany and France. If I find coroplast I will definitively change the wing , stab and elevator.

I think It will take some time before I go out and try the spa3d since here in switzerland we are having snow and storms every other day.

Thanks and regards.

You will notice that I have already changed the landing gear. I used an old one from a crashed trainer. That will save me from buying new tires. Since I couldn't find 5/32 music wire I have used aluminum pipe ( 6 mm ) on wing ( at CG and before ailerons) I think they are lighter. I am afraid I have to use stronger wire on elevator control because the one I have used is flexing too much.

If it flies well I will post Flight photos as well.

Thanks and regards.

Hi guys,

I have finished it at last.

I have covered it with self sticking material. It made a bit heavy. But I have to have something for the orientation, I guess.

Here is another photo.
