Status: offline 		When do I use a direct motor applications verses a gearbox applications? What are the advantages of either set-up?

Status: offline 		Gearboxes let a small motor turn a big prop at low rpm. That is better for slow fliers and thick winged fun-flyers. Direct drive is better for higher speeds with more streamlined aircraft.

Status: offline 		I am using a GWS 350c on my Live wire (1 lb) with good results. They are cheap and work well enough. You might try a 300c with a low gear ratio, like this:

Status: offline 		Thats a nice plane you got there.

The same thing happen to me with a 300-c-D motor, I put a Li-Poly 3sp 1200 mAh it performed great, but after 10 minutes or so It smelt like I roasted it. It was my first time using frying a motor!

I'm going to be heading out to the hobby shop this weekend to get the GWS 350-D motor.
I'll tell you how it goes when I get it.

Status: offline 		You CAN buy a Hacker for direct drive, but for most applications you'll be better off with the geared versions [the 4.4:1 planetary is the standard box for the smaller Hackers (B20 etc)]. You can also fit them into a variety of aftermarket boxes too.

And which one would you recommend for a 10 oz. airplane with a Li-Poly 3sp 1200 mAh.

I'm looking to do 3D maneuvers.

Status: offline 		On my 3DX I use the Himax 2025-4200 with a GWS CNC Gearbox 6:1 kit from Bishop Power products http://www.b-p-p.com/products.htm
and a APC 11 X 4.7 prop. Its a lot of bang for the buck and will hover with 5 ticks of throttle on a 3 cell Kokam 1500.

Status: offline 		For a Hacker the 20-15L seems to be the selection with the hacker you can save some moneys going with the Himax and using the GWS gear box. Himax 2015-5400 motor (2015-4100 was not available)
Castle Creations Phoenix 25 ESC
Kokam 1500 mAh 3s1p battery
GWS 12 x 6 Prop
GWS 350 "D" gearbox
Motor mount rings for Himax/GWS Gearbox
