ORIGINAL: fyooi X-man, Just wonderinig, why you guys (mariner) prefer to use the terms starboard, portside etc etc? why not just use left, right, front, rear? more simple right? Fyooi... I think these terms are invented centuries ago when man first learned how to sail.... The ship always berth in Port at its Left side, hence the term Portside and her Rightside is facing the sea, hence Stbd side (Short for Starboard) where you can see the stars clearly and navigate.. The front of the Ship is called the Forward End or Bow. The rear is the Aft End (After) or Stern. This is where you get the Slang term "Gostan" - Actual term is "Go Astern" The area at the Stern where the crew stay is call the Accommodation Superstructure, the command centre is called a navigation bridge or wheel house. The platform on the mast where the radar or antenna are installed is called a Monkey island... All these terms really make seafarers (seaman, sailors) unique as land dwellers can't understand these jargon...... hehehehe
