The Pigi 3D seems to be such a popular plane right now that I thought an updated and concise thread would be in order. There's a lot of great recommendations out there but it would be helpful to pull it all together with the most updated info.

Reading through various threads, the setup that most often seems to be recommended is the following:

Stock PJS 1000 motor
Jeti 40 controller (instead of the stock Jeti 30)
11 X 4.7 or 12 X 6 prop
Li-poly batteries for lighter weight and longer flight times
Modifying landing gear with stronger wire
Reinforcing horizontal stabilizer with carbon rods or equivalent
HS-55 servos with extensions

Thunderpower TP4200-3S2P Li-polys have been suggested as the best batteries for performance, light weight, and long flight times. I have also seen suggested using two packs of 2 cell Kokam 1500HC in parallel.

Does anyone have any comments or other suggestions about this setup?

Just two comments - surely you are not going to be putting more than 30A through a PJS1000 are you? At most, at 6C, you can get 25.6A out of the E-tecs and 24A out of the Kokams anyway.

Neither the Jeti 30 or 40 are programmable for LVC, so particularly with 3s Lipoly you are going to ruin them fast - I would suggest a Phoenix 25 or, if you really are going to exceed 25A, the Phoenix 35. These CC ESC's are also programmable for timing, and for outrunners you really do need the low advance (0-15 degrees) option there.

Cheers, Phil

Excellent idea jrobert59. I have spent MANY hours reading through messages about the Pigi and lots of money to get mine to the point it's at now. I must say I'm very happy with it now and would like to help other people mod theirs.

I personally think that a 3s1p 2600 IRate Lipo pack from www.cheapbatterypacks.com is the best choice. They go for about $85. They are rated at 26 amps continuous and 39 amps in SHORT bursts. At WOT mine pulls about 28.5 amps static (I RARELY ever use max throttle).

A 12 x 3.8 SF prop is the best choice for me. It hovers my Pigi at about 1.5 amps less than the 11 x 4.7 SF prop while still providing plenty of speed.

Removing the flat wingtips and installing HS-81's on the ailerons provides a MUCH faster roll-rate. I personally used the removed wingtips to enlarge the rudder and elevator.

The best CG in my experience is the back of the receiver cutout.

My Pigi shipped with not enough right thrust and too much down thrust. I put one washer under each of the two bottom motor mout screws to reduce the down thrust. I also put two washers under the two left motor mount screws to add right thrust (for a total of 3 washers under the bottom left screw). This helped hoving and knife edge flight.

To reduce the knife edge coupling, I programmed in 10% up elevator coupled to rudder input, ergo when I input full rudder in either direction, the elevator comes up 10%.

Thank you Dr. Kiwi and Lynnpreston for your comments. It is very helpful to be able to access a site such as this to aid a relative rookie like myself.

I decided to take the plunge and go ahead and order the Pigi. I went with the stock setup with the exception of switching to Li-poly batteries. I found the people at Hobby-Lobby to be very helpful and fairly knowledgable about their products. It was suggested that I go with the Kokam 2 cell 1500 mah pack. I am going to order an Astroflight Lithium charger as well.

The salesperson said they did not have any problems with using the 2 cell Kokams with the Jeti 30 controller. I'll just have to see for myself.

I will update my progress (hopefully) with building and flying the Pigi.

jrobert59,

You should get decent performance out of the 2 cell pack, but it won't be true "3D" performance. The good news is that you can upgrade to a 3 cell pack whenever you're ready. I think you'll be happy with the Pigi.
