Back in the late 90's I took some time away from R/C aircraft hobby and tried restoring my current Mustang a 1973 Coupe : From replacing the floor boards to the head liner,(that took a couple trys..) from the fenders to the rear tail light panel, from the engine which my brother rebuilt for me. Then there was the brakes and suspension the project was an investment in time more so than money. Like most subjects here at RC Universe, it was a labor of love. Here are some pictures and No! I don't drive it in the rain or snow but sure did when I was a young buck having purcashed my first one a '69' and then a 72 with the 351 Clevland and now my 2nd 73. How does ZZ Top put it ahhh yes "And I havn't even sadled my pony yet-"

Great car!

I sure do miss mine. I bought this 1971 Mach 1 Mustang for $1300 in 1979. It had 66k miles, 351C 4V engine, Ram-Air, Auto Trans, power steering, A/C and the handling package. It was my only car for 17 years.

I like it because it's such an unusual engine and can make a lot of power even at only 1.3L. Also, the chassis that the engine is in allows for some of the best handling of any car ever made.

It's not always easy nor cheap though, but the satisfaction comes for me when I outrun the 5.0L - 5.7L cars

It usually runs 12.2 to 12.3 at over 117 mph. I have done some very high 11's at over 116 mph.

I suck as a driver and I don't punish my car. In the hands of a lesser caring person, it probably would run mid 11's.

Suck it up V8 boy! There are many 1.3L turbo rotary cars that have over 400 rwhp

With ME driving, 0-60 takes just 3.4 seconds.

45-105 takes just 5.5 seconds, and I don't have to change out of third gear.

There ARE V8 alternatives

I wish I had my Mustang back, but I would likely usually drive the Mazda. The Mazda is more comfortable, quieter, safer, gets better gas mileage, handles better and is much more powerful than the Mustang was with it's cam, headers, intake, etc. The Mustang was a high 12 second car.

My Rotary has no pistons, rods, cam nor valves.

I had the Mustang up to 140+ mph with it's 3.5 rear gear. The Mazda has a 4.10 rear gear and I've had it up to 186 mph. The Mazda's redline is set at 9700 rpm. If I forget to turn off the a/c, the computer does it for me at 5300 rpm. The Mazda's factory computer is on a shelf. It now has the Haltech engine management system. I tune with a notebook computer from inside the car. It also has a wideband Oxygen sensor so that I can tune, in real time, for max power.

It's just different having a small, high winding turbo engine vs a big n/a V8. I like them both, for different reasons and will have a big V8 again in the future.

My friend has the same car as I do, except that he has a LS1 in it. I outrun him every time (He hasn't modified his 345 bhp engine).

His is though, eaiser to drive as he has much more low end torque than I. If I could have only his or mine, I would choose his, but only for around-town driving. If to win a race..., mine, mine, mine! The 1.3L screamer!!!!!!!!!!

Have you have driven a new Mustang lately and then there are the mods all computer designed and or assisted - As to handling: all types of packages are available for past and present Ford Mustangs then there appears after market versions such as Saleen- And then there is the un mistakable sound of the current production >V-8< with those really nice and obnoxious Flow Masters dependent on the type you install.Obviously you love your rotary but Mustangs are still in a class by themselves and talk all the "rotary" that you wish I guarantee Ford Mustang(s)can take any thing you dish..

Is there a Mustang that gets into the 11's, or even the low 12's with an average driver like me?

Yes, my car is not stock. I had to spend the time and money to take it from 182 bhp to ~450.

How quick and fast is your Mustang? My best qtr mile time is 11.86. My fastest qtr mile time is 117+. It's not a drag car though. It's a "sports car". Over 180 mph top speed and it idles, drives and sounds like stock.

Again, mine is my everyday driver and passes all inspections and is easy to drive, quiet and gets over 25 mpg on the highway with the a/c running.

You'll take anything I dish? Put up the numbers, you dish-topped, shot-peened, hardened, balanced, reciprocating V8 lover!
