Quick...I need advice. Which engine should I use for my new SPA3DT?? I am a Saito 4 stroke fan, but I know the TT will fly the crap out of this plane. The Saito is lighter by 2 ounces (approx.), but the TT will spin more RPM. The only reason I am debating this is I have a chance to buy the Saito at a killer price. Would I need to scale down the Spad for the 56? Quick responses greatly appreciated!!!

Go with the TT if you are going to fly it without worrying about crashing. My Saito flew it great. So I was really afraid to do some tuff stuff.

It's a blast hovering a Spa3d with that low rumbling sound. Go the the 4c I say, the Spa3d never crashed too badly anyway, it's not going fast enough, lol. You can build it the .46 size ( 36" span ) or the .40 size ( 34" span). I would probably go for 34" and some nice light wire landing gear.

Here's a thread from not long ago.

In Mississippi it is against the law to fly a SPAD with a 4 stroke. Something just isn't right about it. But.... Get the killer deal and then save it for a War Bird. Buy a cheap used 46 or $50 GP42 and toss it around.

LMAO-- You wouldnt be related to Dave McDonald would you? Haw -
Seriously, I have 4 strokes on most of my spads, and love them. TT 54 4s on my SPA3D is a real hoot, and the bottom end torque of a 4s is loads of fun on a 3 D plane. The TT46 2s will definetly have more overall power than the Saito, so if unlimited vertical is your main goal, or speed, then go with the 2 stroke. But since the 3 D is seldom flown at WOT for any length of time that is not really an issue. I have had a Mag 91 4s on a big spad, and a ASP 65 and the TT54 on my 3Ds. They have all taken some serious punishment and came back for more. One nice thing about them is that the carb and needle valve is more protected than the typical front carb 2 stroke, so there is less chance of those getting broken. Of course if you do totally trash one by flying it straight in on concrete or such then the cash outlay for the 4 stroke is a bigger loss.
I say if you can get a good deal on a good used Saito 56 go for it!

Thanks everyone, but I went ahead and ran the Thunder Tiger. It flies okay, but it seems like it takes too long to wind up. It's turning an APC 11x5 at 13,100 rpm. It is more than enough power for the 4 lb. 13 oz. plane, but it doesn't have the snappy 4 stroke response I've grown accustomed to with the Saito 100 on my Ultra Stick. Guess I'll have to get the Saito, only problem is I can't return the TT because I ran it today!! Shouldn't be too hard to sell it. BTW, what prop should I run on the Saito 56? Thank you all for your input.

Try light wood props, they will wind up faster. You might want to try an 11X4 as well.

FrankC,
Is that on the Saito or the TT? Also, I remember you having a dual aileron servo setup. I tried it on my plane, but the aileron control is WAY too soft and spongy. Could you tell me how you did yours? Mine are right in front of the music wire on the hige line, running span-wise. Do the servos need to run lengthwise for more rigidity? Do the dual servos really make that much of a difference? Also, the plane is really pitch sensitive with respect to speed. If I go full throttle, it will pitch up . If I pull back to idle and point it at the ground, it will nose under into an outside loop. Did I build it wrong??
