Just my two cents: V1 means, the maximum speed in the takeoff at which time the pilot must make the decision to , in a nut shell, take off or abort the takeoff. V2 means, takeoff safety speed, thus when the airplane is rotated for takeoff These terms are normally used with high performance aircraft (Jets), V1 was derived from the field length to ensure that if there is a problem during the takeoff roll, the airplane would not end up going off the end of the runway. All Jet manufacturers include a table in the flight manual with runway length minimums based on aircraft weight and air conditions ie., density altitude, temp, pressure altitude and so on. If the aircraft is limited to say a 5000 foot runway, the decision speed or V1 would be roughly half of that. During the takeoff roll when the airplane safely passes V1, with no problems, then V2 is called and the airplane is rotated and off we go..... Hope this helps _Tom
