I have an older version of the top flite P-40 and I have had it built for quite a while and I have finnaly decided to make it a race plane. I was wondering what wouuld be the best engine to put one the plane to get the top speed uot of the plane without placing to much wing loading on it so it will still slow down for a decent landing. I have removed the top of the wing and beefed it up so it is very solid and can handle almost anything I throw at it. It is a 60 size plane though so I dont waant to throw a monster at it. Any suggestions would be of great help. I would prefer a 2 stroke because they throw out the higher rpms.

Thanks
Mike

Hello Mike:

Is that the old, old TF kit of about 600 sq. ins wing span?

Are you going to use it in the War Birds Racing? SWRA wing area rules are a bit more liberal than Jetero's.

With a 600 sq. ins wing you can use up to 1.3 cub. ins. for a 2 stroke and 4 stroke both. You need 610 squares for a 4 stroke to 1.55 or 630 for that in a 2 stroke.

To be realistic, I do suggest a .90 2 stroke. For racing I suggest a RELIABLE engine, one that you can get into all the races with. O.S. and Supertiger are my choices. If you really do want to move big time, call Dubb Jet, http://www.jettengineering.com/ and get one of his. They are first class in Power, User friendly and PRICE.

Fiberglass the center section well. Be sure to really beef up the retract area. It will fly like an old style Kaos.

EDITED to add: Don't overlook the big 4-strokes if speed is really important. It may be down in revs, but you can apply those cubes to a higher pitch prop and move across country. While all the numbers usually favor the 2-stroke, out in Phoenix area the 4 strokers usually win.
