Status: offline 		Although Steve did enter a verbal agreement to pay this guy $10 an hour for this plane----Even with the mods this is $350-$400 too much to build this plane. I'll be that Steve never even remotely thought that the bill would be that high...I'd bet that he would have never had this plane built by this guy if he had known. For all of you legal eagles out there that claim that a man's word is a verbal contract...Most verbal contracts won't hold up in court. To be fair, what the judge would determine is what is "Reasonable and Customary" to build this plane. All Steve would have to do is to show the judge a copy of this thread to determine that Runner's bill is waaaaay out of line. Live and learn...

I did not trash anyone here. In fact I was extremely careful to post this in a way that no one has any idea who the builder was.

Some of you have said I got ripped and shouldn't pay it. Some have said it was a fair billing. Some have assumed I am not familiar with the building process and work involved (not true).


From my point of view this problem was the result of two failures. Mine, in not asking for and getting an exact price. The builder, in assuming I was willing to spend any amount and not asking if I realized what it was going to cost. I got trapped because I had contacted 3 or 4 builders from around the country here on RCU. The highest price quoted to me was $350. When I talked to the actual builder it just never occurred to me that it would cost that amount. I made the classic "assumed" mistake. Not picking up the plane was really not an option. I had $550 tied up in the kit, engine (Irvine.72), digital mini servos and misc parts.

I picked the plane up this afternoon. The builder and I agreed we had messed up and settled on a price of $550. I was satisfied for a couple of reasons. First, as many have stated, I made the deal. Second, he did a beautiful job; as good as I have ever seen. He also made a few changes I had not thought of that enhanced the appearance. His building work appears to have been superb.

So, thanks for all the input. When I get her all setup I'll post some pics of the bird that started this all.

Thats histerical this thread constitutes anything but "expert" testimony.

take it from somebody thats in the middle of a large legal battle.

Expert testominy is bought and paid for by both sides

There is no fair in the law.

The only thing this thread illustrates is the need to prevent miscommuncation.

If the plane was built to the specs then the cost is not a factor.

The mistake was primarily the customers who in there right mind enters an opened contract these days????

I don't buy a hamburger without checking the price first

This guy had a plane custom built and never once thought to ask How much is it going to cost
Then we get the peanut gallery here chiming in with comments that he was ripped off... Please

I'll bet anything that regardless of the price there would have been some type of "problem" for the simple fact that this guy is clueless

Status: offline 		Maybe not expert testimony in it's own right but it would be looked at as well as other testimony from expert witnesses as well.....This coming straight from my brother's mouth standing next to me---An honest to goodness real life attorney!!! Judges can wade through all of the paid for BS and get to the core of the issue. I never said that this thread alone was enough evidence..... Good for you Crashem---You check out hamburger prices before you buy...Steve was naive enough to assume he wouldn't be gouged...Basically sounds like a nice guy. I've kept up with Steve's posts since the old RCO days...No need to call him clueless.....I'm willing to bet that Steve has learned his lesson.

I'm glad that you resolved this to both of you guys satisfaction. Let us know how you like your HOTS!!! I had a piped Rossi 60 on mine---Knife edge loops were nooooo problemo!!! I eventually sold mine to pay for another project. I kinda wish that I had it back!!!!

Status: offline 		I think the plane looks great. I have built over 30 planes, I bet that plane would have taken me at least 50 hours. I don't think the time frame of 65 hours is unreasonable at all.

I guess I am just a slow builder.
