Hello All EZ'rs.
My 160 just showed up yesterday. One word "WOW". Just as I wread on this thread' the instructions are pretty special !.
Good thing the assembly is so straight foward. It is a beuatiful look at this scale. Well now to the first question !. Does any one also have the 160 ? And the second is' At this point I have heard a little about the C.G. Whether to set C.G with the tank full or empty from the AK-dealer.
He was not sure about wich way to set it !. But remembered hearing something about it and thought I should ask someone. And who better to ask than an EZ comunity ?
Excited to get started. This plane just moved to the top of the build list !. It just looks fun!
Anyway-Hope to hear. DR(diesel rotor)[:)][&:]

I have been eyeballing this plane for some time. I first found it on the Richmodel site for $550 and saw it a few weeks ago on AK at $350. The stock was at 28 and now is at 27 which says you may be the only one so far with this plane. I sent AK a few emails on it and he was good at replying. At the moment I am holding out for something that may happen with KMP and the Velocity, if not I may go with this one. As far as CG, usually its taken with an empty tank but in this case, if this theory is applied, could make the plane tail heavy???? Whats the location of the tank? Infront or behind CG? Let me know what AK says

What is bothering me most is the engine/ fuel setup. If I have to guess, a Cline regulator may need to be installed to keep from flooding the engine. I wouild be very interested inhearing the progress and pros/cons.

dieselrotor -> RE: Long EZ owners( Mine Flies finally!!!) (1/21/2007 9:11 PM)

Hey Cyclic H-
It took about two days of thinking about it and just decided to jump in. The size caught My attention first' much less just the look.
I really have not dug in yet and just browsed through the instructions and eyeballed the plane. It reminds Me of a Great Planes type of build right down to the motor mount housing. I believe the the C.G is right under or just aft of the fuel cell. And I am going to dowel the engine mount and fuel proof with some 30mnt epox mixed with den-alcohol. mounting any thing as big as a fuji 50 will not allow You to use rubber motor mounts. The top does not supply enough room for the 3/4" hole You have to drill to install mounts. I think I'll go with the O.S 160 glo.Of course I'll play with the C.G when finished putting together and let Ya know in case.

Cyclic Hardover -> RE: Long EZ owners( Mine Flies finally!!!) (1/22/2007 2:57 AM)

When i was talking with AK a couple weeks ago, he was telling me the inverted was best. On that noe I'm not overly worried since I lower tanks on my inverteds anyways. I'm just curious. Do they say to mount the tank facing the engine as would be a "normal plane?" Something about that just bugs me. The tank can't be mounted that way due to the clunk right?? I m am guessing the tank is facing forward with the lines turn and heading back to the engine??

aerogeek -> RE: Long EZ owners( Mine Flies finally!!!) (1/24/2007 12:55 PM)

Hi there people

Well I am looking at getting a 160 version and am very interested in take off and landing speed. Se I want to put some avionics and fuel tanks on this puppy to increase the range to about an hour and have camera capability. I hae heard this is efficient design but by adding another 5kg then its landing speed might be too fast to be practical, unless it glides in real slow. I was also considering putting a GS62 cc engine on (about a 2.4 ci I think) for reliability.

I am real new at this so would be very interested in anyones comments

Thanks

Shane Degen

From what I heard on these and other canards is you can slow em down real good with no stall. I've seen the Turbine Eurosports come in real slow on not much runway. From my initial look at a gassere for this, if i go that route, not much over a 30cc

I had asked AK for the width of the firewall and he gave me the widest width on the cowl. Can you tell me the width of the firewall? Thanks

barrelracer -> RE: Long EZ owners( Mine Flies finally!!!) (1/28/2007 3:28 PM)

I know this is kind of off the subject, but I have been wondering if anybody has heard anything about what ever happened to Val Fusco.I know he burned a lot of people I was lucky I got my money back and a Fancy owners paper for a plane that was never built .I have them framed hanging in my shop it is a warning to my self to never trust anybody and never take them at their word .It sure would be nice to hear he got finally got burned for all the people he hurt.

hattend -> RE: Long EZ owners( Mine Flies finally!!!) (1/29/2007 8:14 PM)

Hopefully he's in a cell with a guy named Bubba.

I got my money back from my credit card company, I was one of the lucky ones.

Hi guys,

Just purchased the Richmodels EZ160, got a OS240 flat twin to go in it, Futaba 9001 servos for elevators and ailerons, 3001's for the rest, PCM r/x etc...

Im going to modify the canards to use two servs, one under each elevator half, still linked with that flexable rod!

Have any of you guys flown with any success one of these planes? been reading some strange things about the flying caracteristics!!

Thank you,

Di n Dave...

Dave,

Will it be possible to post some photos of the firewall area? I'm thinking about getting one and convert it to turbine.
Saw the canard mod in the UK distributor site, so will need to do that as well.

Thanks,
Edgar

Hi Edgar,

ive took a couple of photos of the firewall area, hope that helps with what your trying to do!

is anybody else built one of these kits yet? and flown it with success????

all the best..

Edgar Perez -> RE: Long EZ owners( Mine Flies finally!!!) (10/11/2007 12:00 AM)

Thanks Dave!
There is a thread in the RC jet forum called Malaysian Hangar thats shows one of this with a turbine. However it says it eventually crashed due to break of the elevator hinges[&o]

GEORGE_32 -> RE: Long EZ owners( Mine Flies finally!!!) (10/11/2007 1:07 AM)

HI !!! I AM THINKING TO BUY ONE 160 LONG EZ FROM AK
AND I AM THINKING TO PUT A 26CC GAS ENGINE ..THAT AS I SEEN IT HAS THE SAME WEIGHT AS A 160 2S NITRO
WHAT IS YOUR OPINION ???

HOW ITS THE FLIGHT CHARACTIKIS OF YOURS ???
HAVE YOU CONSIDER ON THE WING TO PUT 2 SERVO AND TO WORK THEM AS FLAP ELERON FOR BETTER LANDING SPEEDS OR FOR TAKE OFF I HAVE HEARD THAT IT NEEDS LONG RUNWAY... AND YOU HAVE TO KEEP THE NOSE UP TO MAKE LESS TAKE OF ROLL..
THANKS[8D][8D][8D]

Your welcome Edgar!

In the instructions it tells you to modify the kit, saying that the elevator linkage is basicly naff!! i will be fitting one Futaba 9001 servos each side of the fusalage and linking one servo to each half of the elelvator, this should solve that problem![sm=wink_smile.gif]

Hi GEORGE_32,
Im fitting a OS240 gemini flat twin 4 stroke glow motor, not sure but i bet this is a lot heavyer that the motor you are asking about, this is a large airframe with a large wing area, i dont think the added weight will hurt at all?
The wing has one servo per aileron, so yes you could mix in flaperon, i would suspect it would work fine, i dont think the full size had any flaps? we have a large grass 'square' which we fly 100" warbirds off of so should be plenty of room for this.

All the best,

Di n Dave...

Jet A1 -> RE: Long EZ owners( Mine Flies finally!!!) (2/4/2008 8:40 AM)

High Guys,

My Richmodel Long EZ 160 is now ready (less engine less tanks) and I am waiting for the turbine to install.
Could anyone please let me know the rudder throws and the correct CG with tank empty (or full- please specify). The picture book (not really a building instruction) says 451 mm from the inboard trailing edge inboard.

many thanks in advance

Wolfgang

Dago Red -> RE: Long EZ owners( Mine Flies finally!!!) (2/4/2008 7:23 PM)

id have to say that the throw for the rudders will be to your preferance, they didnt do a whole lot on my ez when it was flying, and they moved quite a bit. as for balance, that i cant remember, the EZ is in Texas, Im in Alaska.

montijo -> RE: Long EZ owners( Mine Flies finally!!!) (2/17/2008 10:43 PM)

Hi, since my first flyght on the real Acro EZ (French Version) from REVA Space Knights,i have the dream to have my own model.
I made some test flights with EZ 46, some changes from the original are needed, i like to share some photos and informations extremely necessarys to perfect fly with no crashes, this kind of planes are very diferent from conventional planes.
On my EZ I have an OS 52
Engine 2ยบ up
CG 152mm With full deposit
Long travell elevator
The plane must have the nose hight to more easy take off, he as a long Take off running
I change the original Landing gear because is to soft
The original stell part to join the elevator broke easy, is necessary replace it for something more leable, I use two red sullivan.

lechuza -> RE: Long EZ owners( Mine Flies finally!!!) (8/25/2008 8:08 AM)

Hello, I just finished my Richmodel Long EZ 160, with a OS MAX 1.60FX, and I set the C.G. according to the instructions manual of 451mm from the trailing edge of the main wing toward the nose of the airplane. With that setting, I had to use the 6 weight bars that comes with the model to get that C.G. position.Maiden flight and almost crash due to excesive nose heavy, was hard to takeoff and fly, I removed 3 weight bars, went airborne and still nose heavy and difficult to fly and then all weight bars removed, went airborne again and still unable to fly well, and can not hold straight and level flight.Model weights about 16 pounds.

Those who owns this model, what can I do in order to get the correct C.G., which is the correct one?

Thanks, Isaias G.

pitsspecial -> RE: Long EZ owners( Mine Flies finally!!!) (8/25/2008 9:25 PM)

Hi

Im Also putting one of theses Long-ez together with a 240 Gemini in it, did you ballance the aircraft with a full tank of fuel? because the tank is placed towards the back it causes it to be tail heavy, i have read and am going to change the position of the tank so that it is on the c.o.g. and place a small hopper tank just in front of the engine, also ive heard that these become hard to 'unstick' ive been told to change alierons to elevons and mix them in with the canards, aparently this works, but ive yet been able to get round to mine to finish so cant give any results? 16lb sounds a light weight for such a large model?

All the best,
Di n Dave..

lechuza -> RE: Long EZ owners( Mine Flies finally!!!) (8/25/2008 10:03 PM)

Hi Dave, it is a bit light because all the model is made from balsawood and plywood;Normally, C.G. is placed with empty fuel tank, and I tried with full tank(450 cc) that comes with the model and still the same problem. Some friends told me about others friends of them to have this model and flies with nose heavy if balanced according to the manual of 451mm.I will try some aerodynamics formula to find M.A.C. (mean aerodynamic chord), then place the C.G. about 25% to 30% from leading edge of M.A.C. and compare it to the C.G. given in the manual. Some other friend told me about thrust line, but nothing said on the manuals.I do not think ailerons mixed with elevators for elevons effect could help, because my problem is concerned on balance, just need to find the correct C.G. without altering design and flight characteristics of this model, but it is a good point you mention.

We keep in touch, good luck with your model, mine now is some small repairs on the nose section.

Isaias G.

montijo -> RE: Long EZ owners( Mine Flies finally!!!) (8/25/2008 10:58 PM)

Hi, my modell is small one but flies very well, after some changes, the CG with full tank, the engine 2 degree up, long travel (elevator)canard special on down position because its a litle hard to take off, the front canard must have a positive atack angle, on landing we need to mantain 3 points on stick trhotle.

jacksonretlaw-RCU -> RE: Long EZ owners( Mine Flies finally!!!) (9/28/2008 10:00 PM)

What happened to this thread.Did any one figure out control throws an cg yet.Mine just arrived, and i am loking to get started.Any in fo would help.I have seen the turbine 160 movie on RC groups.I will be using a glow motor for this.I can take losing a glow motor but not a turbine.Thank for replies.

pitsspecial -> RE: Long EZ owners( Mine Flies finally!!!) (4/4/2009 10:12 PM)

Hi Guys,

Ive had a break away from doing the Long EZ to do other things, as yet i still havent flown it so has anyone else had any success yet?

I have removed the elevon/elevator mix as i think it will over control it, they seem to fly without the mix so will try first!

Hope to have this finished over the next couple of weeks and maybe get a test flight in!

Keep you posted!!

All the best,
Di n Dave...

Dago Red -> RE: Long EZ owners( Mine Flies finally!!!) (4/4/2009 10:44 PM)

i didnt have elevon mixing on mine, flew great...the the elevator linkage detached.
