Jimmbbo -> RTV and Glow Fuel Incompatibility? (2/21/2004 4:16:21 PM)

We are having a discussion on a field box thread

http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/m_167247/mpage_1/key_field%252Cbox%252Chell/anchor/tm.htm#167247

about the interaction of RTV and glow fuel... Some of us are using Rubbermaid clear containers (some sealed with RTV) for fuel cells in our rollaround field boxes and those using RTV for sealing are experiencing cloudiness, extreme vinegar/acetic acid odors and the clear plastic turning opaque. :(

I am wondeing if there is an interaction between the RTV sealant and glow fuel....? Any chemists on this thread?? [sm=confused.gif]

TIA

Jim

Does this only happen when you use RTV? Are you all using Rubbermaid?

So far, the combination is Rubbermaid clear refrigerator jugs and RTV from several modelers... This is the thread...

Question? WHat type of RTV sealant are you using? RED, Black, Clear etc, etc. Acetone effects all of the RTV sealants. I have used the red RTV alot in sealing fuel tanks and other quick fixes and have found that it is the least affected by fuels and oil. If you are using other than the red, try switching to the red.

Direct contact with fuel will likely cause RTV silicone to degrade. It tends to swell and get brittle and some stuff will dissolve into the fuel. It might be OK for sealing a cap where contact is minimal but I would not rely on a bead to seal a pass-through tube or anything else.

I'm new to all this. What is RTV?

RTV = Room Temperature Vulcanizing silicone rubber sealant. Some of the caulks you get at the home improvement store are RTV, as well as many of the "form a gasket" products at the auto parts store.

UltraCopper by Form a Gasket does not contain acetic acid which can corrode engine parts and UltraCopper stands up to glow fuel very well but not to Diesel fuel.

So, would you recommend using UltraCopper for sealing fuel line fittings where glow fuel is used? Where can you purchase it?

Any Automotive supply will have it, if you are talking about the threads where the fittings screw into the carb, muffler etc. I only use Loctite, if on the fuel line to fitting joint I have never done that, I don't even use clamps on YS engine fuel line connections.
