What about Capricorn One: a really nice and ratty looking biplane, not to mention the helicopters.

Here's one straight out of left field.

Always with Richard Dryfus, and John Goodman

It's kind of a chick flick but great shots of PBY's, A/B-26 and even some great footage of a Citabria.

I love the scene where Goodman sets up with a beach umbrella, a lawn chair and a cooler; to watch his students practice making slurry drops. One of the pilots misses and ruins Goodmans day. Let's just say that the umbrella did him no good. Too funny.

I see that The Final Countdown is coming out on DVD at the end of March. Haven't seen it in a long time.

"Toward The Unknown" was a great film about test pilots at Edwards. It starred William Holden and Lloyd Nolan. Neat flight shots of the Martin XB-51 (as the Gilbert XF-120 fighter) and the Lockheed F-94C. As far as I know, this movie has never been released on video or DVD. My copy is one I recorded off tv 20 years ago, and I have never seen it broadcast since.

Good, someone finally mentioned "High Road to China". Does anyone know what those airplanes were, I can't place them.

DStone, I think I remember "Toward the Unknown". If it's the one I'm thinking off, Holden's character is a test pilot that had been a POW in Korea. All I remember is that the movie had some exciting flying scenes, including some hairy aerial refueling. The last time I saw it was during the late 70's.

Scale model P47's
Band of Brothers, Episode 6, Bastogne, there were two P47's that accidentley strafed their own troops. These were 1/6th scale P47's tarted up for the film. Check out http://www.usaaf.fsnet.co.uk/film/band.htm

Piece of Cake is available thru Amazon. Search in VHS catagory. Not cheap.

This is a great series. I taped it when first broadcast on PBS. Beautiful shots of Spitfires taking off and in flight.

In addition to the already mentioned; Battle of Brittain, Catch-22, The Great Waldo Pepper...
The Last Emperor - if you can stand three + hours of movie to get to about 30 seconds of P-51s they make a great appearance, and the use the real RR/Merlin sounds... BRRRrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr God I love the sound of those!

some black and white gems:
30 seconds over Tokyo
Dawn Patrol - old-school acting aside, there's some unforgettable overhead bombing shots
Hell's Angels - just for the planes man, made in 1930 by Howard Hughes, which is about the LAST movie to include, and blow up ORIGINAL, still flying WWI aircraft, some of which are never seen again on film. Originally a silent film, Hell's Angels pioneered aerial photgraphy, and has some air-to-air dogfight shots that are decades ahead of its' time. The acting and story are hyper-bad though

!

The name of this movie is -Empire of the Sun- and you're right! Great close up scenes of P-51's in 23rd Fighter Group markings strafing. This is the group that evolved from the AVG in China. No more beautiful sound in the world than a Merlin!

I picked up The Final Countdown on DVD today. Love those carrier shots and the attack of the F-14's on the Zeros. The case has a great 3D cover.

Dr. Strangelove, or How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb (1964):
Peter Sellers, Slim Pickens, George C Scott, James Earl Jones
B52s Waaaaaa Hooooo!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Flight of the Pheonix(1965): James Stewart, Richard Attenborough, Hardy Kruger, Ernest Borgnine
After their plane crashes, a model aircraft designer builds a smaller plane from the remains of the crashed cargo aircraft to escape the Sahara Desert.
Paul Mantz, the pilot who flew the pieced together plane, died during filming. This is why the plane is not seen at the end of the film.
