I remember seeing an IMAX film at Nat A&S Museum about 20 years ago, called "Fliers". It had everything from Waldo Pepper to the Blue Angels, and was so realistic you'd duck when they flew toward you. For you "Flight of the Phoenix" fans, the original movie with Jimmy Stewart used a C-82 Packet, the recent remake uses a C-119. If you put "Flight of the Phoenix" into a search engine, there's an article that will pop up telling of the story of making the original. The plane shown in one of the above posts was a one-of-a-kind experimental plane used when the "rebuilt" plane was crashed filming a takeoff scene. The article tells that the "rebuilt" plane had to take off using a dolly under the skids because it couldn't accelerate fast enough on the skids to take off; the "takeoff" scene in the movie is actually an edited touch-and-go. The director wanted a second take so they could play with camera angles, and the pilot hit a hardened sand dune with the skid and the plane piled in. The pilot was crushed by the engine, and his co-pilot was seriously injured. It's a great article. The end of "Saving Private Ryan" has some good P-51 footage. As cheesy as the rest of the movie is, "Top Gun" has some good Tomcat and A-4 stuff. One of my favorites has to be the low pass over the yacht by the F-14's in "Final Countdown". "Full Metal Jacket","Killing Fields" and "The Deer Hunter" have some good chopper footage.
