It may not be a Hollywood movie (plot and so on), but anyone who is a fan of the USN in WW2 needs to pick up a copy of "The Fighting Lady." A full color documentary filmed on the second Yorktown from 43-44. Absolutely awesome footage of Hellcats, Avengers, Dauntlesses, and Helldivers.

Along the same lines, "Task Force" with Gary Cooper is a great one too. Follows the career of one man through his retirement in the late 40's. Some excellent footage of the early days of Naval Aviation plus some good shots from WW2.

Dancing with Wolves had a Beaver and a Turbo Pilatus both on floats. And Alaska (I think thats the title) that used a Balsa USA 1/3 Soper Cub for the crash scene.Great model,I got one at the time the movie came out.

MrMulligan,
Is that show time central, standard, eastern, or mountain time? I'll watch and record it! Thanks.

As far as I know it was 8 PM Eastern. Sorry I didn't answer sooner. We've had bad thunderstorms since 4:30.

it's amazing that after reading this ENTIRE thread, not one metion was made of John Wayne in FLYING TIGERS!! I am 52 and remember watching that movie as a kid and IMMEDIATELY falling in love with the P-40 - not only from the look of the plane, but what the AVG's accomplished in the VERY early days of WWII (for the U.S.). I'll bet there are few here into scale planes that haven't watched FLYING TIGERS more than once....

Ok, I watched and taped "Hell's Angels". Man, what cheesy acting! A few bits of color cinematography here and there to highlight what Mr. Hughes must have felt important. The characters of Monte and Roy were something. Monte was a coward to the core. Ms. Harlow did a great job of playing a Floose. The dog fight and action scenes were actually pretty good for a 1930 film.

How about North by Northwest. Wasn't there a Bi plane chasing Cary Grant. I know this is really reaching for Aircraft scenes. I just sorta remember it. (that does'nt happen to often) Catch22 for the B25's also. Robt.

How about "Young Indiana Jones & the Invasion of the Hawkmen?" May not be the exact title, but it's a pretty close film historically, & deals with WWI, & the development of aircraft during the heat of the war. I found out about the movie from an ad in a magazine for, I think, Proctor Models? They were used for the flight footage in the movie, & the ad said that Spielberg was so impressed that one of the models from the film now resides at his ranch. My wife's cousin in Texas owned the movie, & I watched it during a stay there several years back. May be hard to find to rent, though. -Daniel in Topeka

Here's one that no one has mentioned! X-15, good flying shots and a little story behind it. My late Father-in-Law was on the X-15 project and was there when they filmed and he use to laugh because it took a pretty high clearance to get near the plane and I know that for a fact as I was on security for the YF-12 project. He said that the camera crew was all over the plane and all he could do was shake his head, guess if you have cameras a clearance doesn't mean much. He's in about 5 shots but all you see is the back of his head while looking up during the drop with his hands sheielding his eyes, always told him that was his best side!!!!

Yes you are right ,the guys on the wing are cut outs. A very famous Hollywood stunt pilot was killed when the first plane crashed

>I saw a film about 10 years ago about model aeroplanes. These kids had radio control planes >and flew them of course, but stumbled over a thief's plan to nick expensive jewelry using a >trainer. SO they equipped there RC spitfires with elastic band firing darts and shot the thing >down. This is much as I can remember, but someone should be able to remember it in more >detail and even the name.

"Sky Pirates".......I've been looking for copy of the film for years....The smuggler's plane crossed the English channel with the stolen jewelry as cargo. The kids' grandfather had several scale Spits. There were several flying field scenes. Can anyone find it?

I remember seeing an IMAX film at Nat A&S Museum about 20 years ago, called "Fliers". It had everything from Waldo Pepper to the Blue Angels, and was so realistic you'd duck when they flew toward you. For you "Flight of the Phoenix" fans, the original movie with Jimmy Stewart used a C-82 Packet, the recent remake uses a C-119. If you put "Flight of the Phoenix" into a search engine, there's an article that will pop up telling of the story of making the original. The plane shown in one of the above posts was a one-of-a-kind experimental plane used when the "rebuilt" plane was crashed filming a takeoff scene. The article tells that the "rebuilt" plane had to take off using a dolly under the skids because it couldn't accelerate fast enough on the skids to take off; the "takeoff" scene in the movie is actually an edited touch-and-go. The director wanted a second take so they could play with camera angles, and the pilot hit a hardened sand dune with the skid and the plane piled in. The pilot was crushed by the engine, and his co-pilot was seriously injured. It's a great article.

The end of "Saving Private Ryan" has some good P-51 footage. As cheesy as the rest of the movie is, "Top Gun" has some good Tomcat and A-4 stuff. One of my favorites has to be the low pass over the yacht by the F-14's in "Final Countdown". "Full Metal Jacket","Killing Fields" and "The Deer Hunter" have some good chopper footage.
