Well im new at this and getting a little bored in my 30 something life. Work ,sleep day in day out, me and a buddy have been looking for a hobby and with my mechanical and trades background and his computer background we thought , hey? watching that rover on mars is fun, but wouldn't it be fun to have one of our own? Well not quite that sophisticated but start with something fun like say a 200 lb remote control sand rail/dune buggy with video feed. Been toying with this idea for quite some time, now it's time to take it to the mat. Basic plans include 10-15 hp gasoline engine, 3' wide, 5' long, 15" tires, 4x4 with remote video and blue tooth wireless technology. What im looking for is input for design, links, experiences. I've been siftin through this site for quite a while now and can't seem to find much in the 1/2 to 1/3 scale region, let alone anyones mishaps or adventures with larger remote control stuff. We want to basically build this from the ground up, no kits. Thinkin a good used snowmobile or atv would be great for parts, such as suspension , engine, transmission. Any input would be greatly appreciated , im going blind surfin the net for stuff like this plz give me a leg up.

That sounds like a pretty cool idea... I would rather be riding in a dune buggy than driving via RC. For a buggy of this scale I would suggest lookinig around at various Off-road GoKarts just for ideas. I am currently doing pretty much the same as you only on a 1/5 scale and I have gone to KArts for ideas. This link is a good basic Kart plan, it seems to have a decent off-road suspension set-up and is a good design. http://sadik.net/gokart/ I am combining a Kart type frome with a scaled-up nitro-truck type suspension (I have been involved with the Associated RC10GT for a few years.) I plan on a simple chain drive 4X4 powered by a 30cc Chainsaw. Good luck in your search for info, it is hard to find at times. If you need any ideas or links to parts I'd be glad to help.

Nice link. Almost exactly what i was looking for, designing those front a-arms was a big concern of mine, been saving photo's of atv's and karts and trying to zoom in and draw up my own design. This will help simplify things. I agree i would love to ride in it too but this project is in honor of Tim Taylor, go big or go home. LOL

Tim Taylor has been an inspiration to us all! let me know how your plan works out, it sounds really cool and I'd like to see some pics once it is completed.

Below is one of my old posts with a "large scale" link that you may enjoy.

Well in a round about way the "civilian" link you posted does link to a DARPA link.
http://www.darpa.mil/grandchallenge/index.htm As the link I just posted claims, "Real Scale Robotics".

The main link for the "Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency" is: http://www.darpa.mil It used to be called ARPA, then DARPA, then ARPA, and DARPA once again. I don't know what your background is but you may find DARPA interesting since one may consider it an R&D "think tank" into much more than military applications. Ever hear of ARPANET? ....Internet!

Edit: By the way, it doesn't matter if the link is darpa.mil or arpa.mil --it works either way.
