Lookin' good in the air.

That shot flying close overhead is my favorite and it made me wonder what you are doing for an air exit. Bill

pc55bomber,
Tower website says the weight of the 653R struts is over 1 pound each!!! Just weighed the stock system and the whole thing is about 3.5 ounces. Is that weight right? How can this plane afford almost two more pounds if it is true?

I would love to have the struts but not at that weight penalty. Must be wrong.

Thanks

Hi Heritage

I found another strut and it weights 1 & 1/2 oz only,(no axle or adaptor insert) all together less than 2oz, my whole wing only weighs 3lb5oz, so Towers figures are completely wrong.

Thats with all the changes I made:
Extra retract servo
struts
robart scale wheels
extra shear webbing and filled in cutouts in the ribs as well
extra ply, balsa and epoxy in the wells
Modified the original nylon retracts.

Have not changed the CG and it flies great.

Hope this helps
Cheers
Paul

Paul,
That makes sense! I am going to do the struts and try it with the one servo I have now. So far, it has worked fine. With the stock gear, 3/16th wire, anything other than a totally greased landing bent the wire after just a few landings. A bumpy landing bent them easily. It is a pretty nice plane overall so I do not understand why they still use such poor retracts.

We just lengthened our runway to 560 feet so I am looking forward to hot landings with long runouts. Should be fun. Think I am going to get a GP Little Toni next for more speed. Or maybe I will change out my Saito 100 with my Super Tiger G 90 on the P51. I am adding a Perry carb and pump to it so am expecting I can get a couple thousand more rpm over the Saito, though probably a smaller prop. I am guessing that the Little Toni will be faster than the P51. In any case, I usually fly sport aerobatics with a bit of 3D so the speed and hot landings are a fun alternative, especially when they also do aerobatics really well too. I learned the hard way that the P51 will not slow down like my 3D planes. This is my second one. DESTROYED the plane and the Saito 100 the first time.

BTW, I moved the CG back 1/4" from recommended and I was able to get a little flare on landing that I could hardly get before. It did not get squirly but I don't think I would go any further back. Still looking for the best combo of flaps and speed for landing but I think so far that a bit less than full flaps works best.

Thanks again,
Jim

Jim i've had a few really bumpy landings. The other field we fly off is a polo ground...deep horse hoof marks all over....The stock retract wires held up fine including one where i landed deadstick, wheels down full flaps... BTW This one really slows down...rock solid approach...with 1/4 throtte and full flaps.. Just likes to tip over thats all...

MOre pics...

World Models CG, is it measured where the wing meets the fuselage? I understand it is 4.5 inches from the leading edge measured somewhere along the wing.
Thanks

Yes, right where the wing touches the fuse, measure back from there. Great flying plane. You will love it.

Can someone tell me the size of the fuel tank (cc) for the WM P-51? Mine arrived with the cap having a split and will not sealed. I was so pissed I tossed it before getting the size and manual is no help.

i used either a 20 or 24 oz tetra tank (can't remember which) - mounted over the wing.... go back many pages to see pictures of how it was installed.

Hi ya i have been watching your thread for some time now, i also have a Pete 2nd Mustang which has been a great flyer for some 60 flights. The retrack bearers started to break so i kept re-gluing them, but promised myself that if they went again i would strip the plane and recover it. i ended up doing a lit bit more than that, i striped all the covering off and glassed the wing and the fuzz and then painted with 2K base and added panel lines and rivets. Here are a fews photos for you to see.
it's not quite finished yet as i am waiting for the canopy from Helger. I will get some flying shots as soon as it's finshed.

hi guys,
i just bought mine few weeks ago, i'll start building it next week, was wondering about the servos, what servos will be good for this warbird? i need servos that aren't expensive, 30 bucks a piece if possible. for the retracts, i have a high torque low profile one from my crashed ZERO. i would like to know what to use for other servos.
P.S. am asking this question because it's the first warbird i'm going to build myself with a friend checking on my work
thanks in advance foe your help.

hi thrre nitro you asked about the servos ive got futba 148's in the alerons, flaps, elavator.and rudder and 3001 for the throtle and a hitec ratract servo .all are very cheap bugget servos and have been in the airframe for well over 2 years and has been flown a lot the only servo showing signs off wear is the retract servo not because the servo is bad is because i fly of grass and it take's a betting on rough ground.you have made a good choice for your first warbird the plane is a great flyer an has no bad habbits well not for me anyway just be carfull with those retract bearers as they are in my opinion a bit weak what engine are you plannig to put in good luck!!!!!

hey dremelboy,
thanks for your fast reply
i will check those futaba servos, thanks for the info, actually its my second warbird, my first was a WM .60 zero that crashed 2 weeks ago we have this huge electricity tower next to our runway, i'm a rookie rc pilot but had no problems flying, takin off and lading my bird. it's quiet difficult to estimate the distance between the plane and the tower specially for a rookie pilot so i crashed it into the tower, it looked like a real kamikaze zero LOOOOL.
well for the engine, i have the OS FS-120S-E from my zero, will it be good for this bird? a also thinnkin about the Saito .125 because of weight issues. the saito is much lighter than the OS.120 or the YS.110
what do you think?

hi nitro i got the servos round the rong way 3001 for all the serfeces and a 148 for the throtle ive got a asp120fs in mine she flys very scale a bit nose heavy so it makes it fun on take of on grass beacuse she just wants to nose over so i have to use full elavator on taxiing in flyt is sorted out with a few clicks of up elavator to level her out the only thing i will say is dont use full flap on landing as she realy will slow down and floats not very scale like landing come in with just over half flap and and a about a 3rd power lovely this only my opinion but works for me fine if you post some pics when you start im sure we can all help you along

hi dremelboy,
i was checking the servos few minutes ago, Torque: 3.0 Kg/cm, isn't a bit low for this size warbird? i was thinking more like 5-6Kg/cm or 70-85oz/in .... what do you think? for example the digital ones from JR DS821. they are about 29 bucks a piece??
also you didnt tell me what you think of the Saito 125 engine, or the YS110s?
am considering rebuying the WM .60 ZERO (i love this bird) and reinstalling the OS.120 on it with all the servos from the old zero, i had JR 519s and 591s in it. that's why i need your opinion about the engine for the P-51.....
and thanks for your tips and advices

Ali

hi there nitro the futaba 3001 is a ballraced servo witch pulls 2.4 kg on a 4.8 or 3.0kg on a6.0vso if you wanted to use a 5.0kg servo i would use it in the flaps up to you realy but seems a bit ott dont forget this is a scale plane the only hi g manovre i do apart from barrel rolls lops and revarsals is a dairy turn and mine hold up fine but ther is no harm in going for a higher torque servo for peace of mind .engines well the ys will be well over powerd unless you want a reno racer lol!!! and then you will need to beaf up the servos i think the os is about the same weight as my asp mabe a bit lighter not alot in it the saito sounds good a bit more power than the os but not as much as the ys awsome engine though i would go for the saito if it was my choice whats the best price?

saito 100 is about 295 bucks without shipping to Kuwait
saito 120 is about 360 bucks
OS 120 is about 320 bucks
YS 110 is about 370 bucks

i think i'll go with a SAITO but should i go with .100 or a .120 ?? what will you choose if it was your chice??

the ZERO was fast for me with the OS 120, so if the Saito has more power= more speed, i'll be more than happy with it

thanks alot dremelboy, you are great

hi nitro no you dont need a low profile servo just a standard retract servo if you go to your local hobby store and ask for one youll get the right one around £30 her in the uk if you look back on this thread youll notice one guy has used two servos for the retracts someething i may do as my bird is a bit heaver than the standard one and my gear keeps stikking just a though
