I just got my .60 WM P51. I only had time for a quick peek but from that first look this is a far better model than the H9. The quality and the design seem to be much better. I'll begin the work on it tomorrow. The rest of my Robart stuff will be here today or tomorrow.... I'm not at the shop this afternoon. I hope to have it ready soon but it's also deer hunting season here so I'm torn between two hobbies.....

More later!

I didn't get much done today. I did wick thin CA everywhere I could in the fuse and I epoxied the firewall and F1. I'll glass the backsid of the firewall and epoxy the fuel tank area tomorrow. My Robarts are a perfect fit as far as the mechanisms are concerned, but the ofset struts I have on them are too long. I'm hoping I can cut them down to the corect size tomorrow. I would also like to see the air tank mounted on the wing so there are no lines to hook up and disconnect every time i go to the field. I'm still very impressed with this model.

I'm debating between my OS 91FX or a Supertiger 90 for power... I've read several posts about the ST having cooling issues.

Anyone find a better canopy for this plane? The factory job is less than great....

Is the factory tail wheel settup a good one (durable)? I was thinking about a double spring tailwheel settup.

Those of you who beefed up the wing where the retracts mount, did you do enough to have to re-cover any of the wing or just what you could get to?

Thanks in advance!

Got the firewall glassed in, and coated the firewall and all exposed wood both in and out with thinned epoxy. I went with the double spring tailwheel but the area to mount it was just balsa sheeting so I glassed the area inside the fuse below the horizontal stab and through bolted the tailwheel in place.... It is VERY strong, but if it does break I'll have to cut it out and start over.... Shouldn't be an issue though. If something breaks this thing out the plane will have to be in pretty bad shape. I'll try to finish the fuse tomorrow. My retract kit is still enroute!!! Once that gets here I'll be flying in no time.

270win,

while you have the fiberglass out....

glass the leading edge of the retract bays all the way up to the leading edge of the wing. also, glass over the ribs on each side of the retract bay up to the leading edge of the wing and back to the spar.

it'll really strengthen things up to handle the landing gear torque upon landings.
make sure you don't over-glass any area and not be able to fit the retracts in tho

i've had a few harder-than-normal landings and a few landings where my plane had to be put into the grass to slow it down on a few hotter-than-normal landings... and the gear have held up great.

p.s. i'm using the stock tail gear - no epoxy fiberglass required. i'm also using the stock retracts & wheels - no problems there either.... i did replace the control retract rods with 4-40... but that's probably overkill.

about 100 flights on my plane now.

Rare Bear-
How did you access the ribs? Did you cut into the wing? I may also use some carbon fiber strips.... Overkill is my middle name. As long as I can keep the weight down. I'm planning to use Robart pneumatics... UPS tracking says Tuesday delivery. I'll put the glass where you recommended. I fly off of a grass field or I'd give the factory gear a shot.

I mounted the horizontal and the vertical stabs today. I'm kinda dragging my feet on it until all the stuff shows up...

i didn't cut into anything.

you have access to the bay-side of two ribs on each side of the retract bay. i didn't bother glassing both sides of EACH rib but if you want to go that far, that's up to you.

when ya get done with the first 20 flights, you'll wish you had put in a ys140. this plane begs for power AND speed AND.... yu can always throttle back to get 91 performance.

Yea, I know the throttle can be backed off.... I've had bad luck with YS.... i know they're great engines, but i bought one (used), never did run right, sent it to YS, spent $160.00 on everything they said it needed, got it back and it ran the same. It wouldn't make full power.... I sold it. If I could find a YS 110 I'd go that route..... I'm also doing 4 other builds so the 91FX is laying around.

I'll just do one side of the ribs. I can't wait to fly it!

yeah, i think there's a lot of folks that can't figure out how to properly tune a YS engine.

how about an os160?
hehehehehehehe

Yeah I agree! I watched a guy at our field today mess around with a brand new YS .63 for 3+ hours and never got it to run right. I flew my OS.120 powered GSP Hellcat about 5-6 times with no issues. Every time it cranked I just smiled.... I know in the hands of someone who understands them you cannot beat a YS for power.

A 1.60FX would be great! Isn't it a bit much for this size plane though? It would probably have unlimited vertical!! Not that there's anything wrong with that...

exactly. and they are not that hard to get to learn - it just takes a little time and patience at first

Only your plane has the belly scoop... What's the deal? Was that just for the pic? That's the only thing that i've looked at trying to figure out why they did it that way....

No, me and the othere guy without the belly scoop took them off to make them a mile an hour or so faster.....every little bit helps. Made a nice transition to fill in the gap between the wing and the fuse......

just as taildraggin dave said. correct me if i'm wrong dave but i think i heard tim (the guy with the os160) say that he scraped it on the runway while doing a VERY low pass... so he took it off and you did to.

i left mine on for looks. not like i'm in a race to scoop out the last MPH.
