Well , i'm not sure ,, i suppose it did fly faster,, i had a good smoke trail with the 14-12,,,,, but not too much smoke with the 14-10,, but the 12 seemed to give it more vertical pull ,, it could be all in my head .. either way the Mustang still flew great,,.

Your findings would be correct. The 10" pitch would allow the engine to rev out farther and probably just a little leaner which is why the smoke trail was reduced. The 12" pitch would give more vertical pull since each rotation moves the plane 2" further in the air. This, of course, depends on the engines abilility to pull a larger prop and it seems like it does.

Well I've now performed many flights with this model, using electric power. So far nothing wrong to report, it lands beautifully and the flaps works very well. I get about 8 min. flying time with acrobatic figures on two TP4200 MHA 11.1V packs in series.

Even with the electric power the motor produces some vibration and creates a nice noise during low passes.

It's unbelievable how precise and stable this thing flies...I call it a torpedo with wings! I made such a low pass the other day that the air scoop was lightly scratched by the runway!

Guys,

I finally started my Mustang after 2 years in the box. Too hot to fly (been 45 deg C and 20 mph winds for the last 2 weeks) so might as well build.

Cut out the hatch to start with. Pics attached.

Set up is as follows:

AXI 4130/16, Jeti 77A, 6S2P 4400 mah, 16 x 10 APC-E, Still undecided on the servos. I'll probably go with the 645MG and the HS75BB.

I'll probably need to put the batts in the fuel tank area to get her to balance.

Btw I need some of the blue covering film to touch up around the hatch area. Anyone know which film i should order. I Checked Monokote and Coverite and they dont match the blue i need.

I'll be using the AXI stand off mounts (long screws and nylon spacers) on this one. Does anyboby have the firewall hole patterns for the AXI radial mount? Would be a great help.

Will post more pics as I go along.

Cheers...

hummingbird- I am using robart spring extend retracts in mine. they are working fine for the 6 flights i have had. previously i have used spring air retracts and they are excellent retracts also. I have used air retracts for about 8 years in my warbirds and have found that the robarts 600 series retracts with the plastic frames are weak and easily broken so I don't use them. My buddy dog tried century jet retracts and found they were brittle and broke easily so we don't use them either. be sure to get retracts that use 3/16 wires as the 5/32 wires are too weak for the occasional bumpy landing and they will bend, so you will need to straighten them - its less hassle to use the 3/16 wires.

hummingbird- I am using Robart 511w1 retracts. However, I am now having two problems- one minor and one fairly major. the major problem is that when these retracts lose air pressure they do not fully extend and lock unless you do several loops at full speed. this is not good - they are advertised as air retract spring extend, so this is a major problem to me.
the minor problem is what caused me to find out the major problem above. somewhere the system is losing pressure. so i experienced a couple of flights where they retracted but during the flight they started to extend on their own - but they didn't fully extend. fortunately i had my trusty g90 running at full power and had the speed to loop fast enough so they extended and locked.

by the way with spring air retracts i have never had them partially extend like these robarts- when spring air retracts lose pressure enough to unlock and start to extend they have ALWAYS extended and locked down. so unless robart sends me a permanent fix or offers to fix these retracts this will be the last time i use these retracts - at least the spring extend version.

so i will let you know what robart says- however it wil be a few weeks before I send them in.

hummingbird - if you want to get solid retracts I would suggest you get the 116hd spring air units, they are set up for 3/16 wires and come with these wires I believe. their site is www.retracts.com. I looked at their site- looks like they would sell you a system including air tank, valve, fill valve, etc for $116.95. they also state they will price match the robart copies like I have. so if you want a strong set of retracts now I suggest you get these.

this will save you those broken props. it will probably take a little grinding on the retract mounts to fit them in, but most any different retracts will need that.
