Thanks Mike, I will keep an eye on the covering bummer that you have had such a bad time. I looked at my plane and it looks great so well see.
I am going with pneumatic gear I just havent decided which gear I am going to use yet.
I think I will go with the Saito 120.
Viper

Got mine together today, Finally!!!! Didn't have time to fly her yet. YS 110 engine ran great with factory set everything. Needle valve was turned out 1 and 1/2 turns per instruction manual. Maybe a little lean. Still gobbs of smoke. Can't wait till next weekend!

viper21 -> RE: World Models .60 size P-51 Mustang--Petie 2nd version (11/1/2004 2:59:54 AM)

She looks sharp MustangAce, I am deciding on which four stroke to get I think I have it narrowed to a Saito 120 or an OS 120 Pumper III
I thought of the YS 110 but I was told they are out of stock and wont be imported till December sometime. What muffler is on the engine.
Thanks Viper

PS: how are the stock retracts I am planning on installing Robart 551 pneumatic retracts that are bored out for their Robo Struts I am going to use 653 L/R

MustangAce -> RE: World Models .60 size P-51 Mustang--Petie 2nd version (11/1/2004 3:23:02 AM)

The plane has barely a tank through it so far. I will taxi and fly it after the engine has been ran a little more. The muffler is a Slimline Pitts that was made for the YS 91. I am a little concerned about possible contact with the cowling though. Vibration can cause big problems here. Next weekend.

MustangAce -> RE: World Models .60 size P-51 Mustang--Petie 2nd version (11/1/2004 3:26:06 AM)

P.S. I came across the phone number of a Hobby Shop that still had a couple on the shelf. It was on the YS engine support forum here. Thanks to RC universe I have a brand new FZ110. I am sure there are still some around somewhere.

I had a feeling you're going to like the YS 110. It wasn't too difficult to tune, wasn't it?

MustangAce -> RE: World Models .60 size P-51 Mustang--Petie 2nd version (11/1/2004 4:59:00 AM)

Yes, the engine has remarkable power and I only touched the high speed needle about a quarter turn.

viper21 -> RE: World Models .60 size P-51 Mustang--Petie 2nd version (11/1/2004 5:37:01 AM)

So guys since the engine is only a dollar more at Chief Aircraft I should go for the YS? Like I said I wont be building the Mustang till llate December or January. So I am going with the YS also(I always wanted a YS 4 stroke) I have a NIB no longer made YS 61AR thats going in a Sig King Kobra that I am painting in Thundertbirds colors.
I will strengthen the firewall with West Epoxy and 4 oz cloth and balsa and ply doublers on the Mustang.
Thanks for the advice Richard and the rest of you guys.
Joe

One of the sources, either Chief or Central, includes shipping on their price with the YS110.

bbuss -> RE: World Models .60 size P-51 Mustang--Petie 2nd version (11/2/2004 12:26:14 AM)

Hey Dave, what control throws are you using, including flap. I recall you said that you used 40 degrees of flap for landing. With the recommended throws you get just over 30. The aileron and elevator are way over the top. I would like to hear what you finally came up with. Then when I fix it I can set it more realistically.

bbuss -> RE: World Models .60 size P-51 Mustang--Petie 2nd version (11/2/2004 12:28:36 AM)

I have a 110 on back order with Chief and the last time I checked he was estimating December before he gets them. Tower is now listing them and is expecting delivery mid November according to their web site.

taildraggerdave -> RE: World Models .60 size P-51 Mustang--Petie 2nd version (11/2/2004 1:06:20 AM)

On the control throws, I believe I cut what they said for the ailerons and elevator in half. The flaps are set just until they bind against the wing--but not quite. At the speeds that we fly at, control throws can be kept to a minimum. I'm using about 1/4" on the ailerons and no more than 3/8" on the elevator. I run the rudder up to the stops also. I set the CG exactly where the book said. To me, this plane is the absolute best Mustang I have flown. I hope a change in setup yields a better flying plane for you, too.

bbuss -> RE: World Models .60 size P-51 Mustang--Petie 2nd version (11/4/2004 12:45:53 AM)

Thanks Dave, that is exactly what I needed. I had actually looked at the flap throw and concluded that it was the limit of travel to get the 40. I did fly it with dual rates on elevator and aileron set to 50% on low rate and it really tamed it down, but with the 30 or so degrees of flap resulting from the recommended throw it was not good.

lownloud -> RE: World Models .60 size P-51 Mustang--Petie 2nd version (11/4/2004 4:17:35 PM)

well, I simply cant believe the quality of this thing. Not one wrinkle and comes almost completely built. It seems very light to me and with a 1.20 Saito, this thing will be a total rocket ship. Here's what it looked like 10 minutes after UPS dropped it off. I will have her in the air in a few weeks and will post some in flight shots. I may need to adjust my shutter speed on my camera!

I am impressed to say the least.

Very cool bird.
Flaps, it has F*&%ing flaps!

taildraggerdave -> RE: World Models .60 size P-51 Mustang--Petie 2nd version (11/5/2004 1:35:39 AM)

Yeah, and those flaps allow the slowest, most controlled landings of any Mustang I have flown in a while. If you can't grease this plane on then there is something wrong.............

MustangAce -> RE: World Models .60 size P-51 Mustang--Petie 2nd version (11/7/2004 3:09:52 AM)

Flew her today! WOW!! I was a little (lot) nervous about the whole flight. I had to adjust the regulator screw in my 110FZ and idled great with good transition. It was still rich and flew like a rocket! The landing was really smooth, now that I look back on it. Boy, I was a nervous wreck.

This is the one I have been waiting for!!

I just finished mine with Saito 120. still seems light as a feather.... I should weigh it I guess. I hope to maiden her this weekend. I am totally impressed with the quality of this plane. Fit and finish is way better than I could ever do.
I will keep you posted.

MustangAce -> RE: World Models .60 size P-51 Mustang--Petie 2nd version (12/7/2004 4:37:53 AM)

Looking forward to hearing it.

Alkaline -> RE: World Models .60 size P-51 Mustang--Petie 2nd version (12/7/2004 6:15:54 AM)

well here is mine:
[image]http://renmaps.neronhosting.com/mustang/newA.jpg[/image]
but its the 46 size version... and its a replica[&o] but flies like the wm model[;)]

lownloud -> RE: World Models .60 size P-51 Mustang--Petie 2nd version (12/7/2004 6:20:52 AM)

mustangace, did you use the stock gas tank and did the clunk work ok for you?.... mine seems to not want to drop forward when I lean the tank forward. I obviously wont be flying anything if this problem isnt fixed. Perhaps fuel sloshing around in the tank will help pull it forward in a dive. It's the only part of the build that has me perplexed.

Richard L. -> RE: World Models .60 size P-51 Mustang--Petie 2nd version (12/7/2004 6:29:54 AM)

Why do you want the clunk to drop forward? It's only important to have the clunk move freely at the back of the tank. Your engine will not quit in a dive if the clunk stays at the back of the tank.

taildraggerdave -> RE: World Models .60 size P-51 Mustang--Petie 2nd version (12/7/2004 6:57:18 AM)

lownloud,
I have to agree with Richard on this one. Not sure why you would want the clunk line to fall forward in your tank. In a dive, there should be plenty of force to keep the fuel at the back of the tank....go back to the first page of this thread and check out the photos of how I set up the fuel tank. My tank is a 20oz ( I think ) Dubro and I mounted it closer to the CG so the plane will fly more consistant as the fuel level goes down. Also, I think the stock tank is way too small for any of the big engines most of us are using. I have a Saito 1.20 in mine and get about 12-13 minutes to a tank at wide open throttle. Prop is currently a 12x13N APC. Very fast.

Richard L. -> RE: World Models .60 size P-51 Mustang--Petie 2nd version (12/7/2004 7:34:25 AM)

20 oz tank? Holly crap! I'm only using 14 oz tank with all my YS 110's, and I'm good for 11-12 minutes.

MustangAce -> RE: World Models .60 size P-51 Mustang--Petie 2nd version (12/7/2004 12:43:56 PM)

I haven't noticed any problem with that. I do remember the fuel line for the clunk being a little flimsey. Replace it with standard.

lownloud -> RE: World Models .60 size P-51 Mustang--Petie 2nd version (12/7/2004 4:02:27 PM)

you know what, you guys are right. My other tanks are so much bigger that I guess I remember the clunk being able to fall forward. It does seem small but fits perfect in that hole so I'm just gonna use it.

thanks guys.
then for sure a flight report this weekend
