would i be better off using a higher torque servo on the flaps?

I would use high torque servo on the flaps. Those flaps have pretty big area, and when you deploy them, there is a lot of force acting against them. I was using standard servo on the flaps for my TF P-40E, and when I dropped the flaps, the servo gear stripped.

rare_bear -> RE: World Models .60 size P-51 Mustang--Petie 2nd version (1/6/2005 9:04:53 PM)

thanks richard.
i should just look at dave's mustang the next time he brings it to the field.

viper21 -> RE: World Models .60 size P-51 Mustang--Petie 2nd version (1/6/2005 9:46:43 PM)

Richard and all, I emailed Bruce at CJM to see if they had a drop in replacement retract with a strut I told him I needed a pair of retracts and struts. The ones he sent me a picture are mechanicals which is not problem I can just buy a JR 260 oz retract servo and I am sure that will haul the strut and a 3.5 Robart wheel so it would look more scale. When I asked him he said I would probably need to make major modifications to install the retracts and he asked me to send him a picture of the wing with a ruler showing him the distance of the center of the wheel to the retracts. So I will take some digital pictures and send them to him and see if he can make a set of retracts to fit my plane. I tried Robo Struts but the offset strut I would need to clear a 3.5 wheel half the wheel and strut would hang out in the breeze. I thought I would just lower the wheel wells but there is only about a 1/8" between the wheel well cup and the top sheeting so it cant be moved so I thought maybe a CJM would have something to fit so I attached the picture. I forgot to add that for 100:00 extra they could make them pneumatic and not mechanical.

OK Got my order confirmed last night so in a few days I will have my WM P51 arriving ..

Will be the first and only WM P51 Petie 2nd here in Panama .. Most are H9 and TF 60

Now I am on the look for the best Engine combination for this bird.. I have my mind on the
SAITO 1.00 or the YS 1.10 although this last one seems to me as to much power for this
8.5 pound plane.

Also have sitting a OS 61 FX with aprox 40 flights which might serve well

As we are at sea level engines tend give very good performance and power is not a problem..

I will wait until Aircraft is here to have a better idea of what to use on it

Viper any reports on yours what did you finaly end up using in yours...

Would like to hear some comments on the guys using the YS 110 or Saito 120 since everyone
tells me here would be over powered...[:-]

viper21 -> RE: World Models .60 size P-51 Mustang--Petie 2nd version (1/14/2005 6:30:55 PM)

Phantom, I am going to use my new OS Surpass Pumped III with an Slimline inverted pitts muffler. I wont be using CJM Retracts. I will probably try installing Robo Struts on the stock mechanical retracts and a very strong retract servo. I may go with Robart pneumatic retracts but if I do I will probably have to do some work on the retract plates. One thing I strongly recommed that if you have this plane you take out the retracts and look inside with flashlight. I found some sheeting not glued down to the rib that holds the mounts in place. If I need to move the mounts down so the Robo Struts will come up into the wheel well I will also use some fiberglass and epoxy to strengthen the mounts infact I am going to do that anyway. Make sure you take the retracts out and CA the holes for the wood screws that hold in the retracts. I looked at the retracts and they seem to be pretty decent and their frames are made from sometype of reniforced plastic and I didnt find any side play in them. So I may just install the Robo Struts first.

I have the YS110 in mine at 800ASL.

Flys great, really fast. Perfect match.

Phantom pty -> RE: World Models .60 size P-51 Mustang--Petie 2nd version (1/17/2005 2:16:41 PM)

Guys need some help here....

Been in contact with main Web Shops and everybody seems to be out of Stock on the YS 110
can anybody tell me were can I find one ....?? [sm=confused.gif]

This Mustang would definately be a niceone with the sound and power of a YS..

rare_bear -> RE: World Models .60 size P-51 Mustang--Petie 2nd version (1/20/2005 2:25:20 AM)

if you can afford the 110, go with it.

and don't let people tell ya it's overpowered. be the first one to make them drool when they see you tearing up the sky.

i have a 110 in an acrobatic 60 sized plane which weighs 8.5 pounds and it's a perfect match. i can go vertical without coming to a stop which makes for impressive verticals right after takeoffs. of course, with a mustang, it's all about speed and you'll have that.

you also do not have to fly full throttle like you might if you had less power... and this equates to less stress on the engine and therefore, longer life.... saves gas too. most of the time on my acrobat, i am at 2/3 throttle.

of course, you'll want to open up the 110 and fly at top speeds. your buddies will be impressed and you will be glad you put it in.

keep in mind that there is a steeper learning curve on tuning the YS engine properly. once in tune, it doesn't go out of tune for quite some time.... and it's not really all that hard to tune like some people might tell you. they tell you that because they probably couldn't tune the engine themselves properly.... or they go by word of mouth.

here is a good link:
http://home.comcast.net/~mark.fuess/ys110.htm

just my opinion of course :)

Ditto on that. I've been arguing with people over in the engines forum about YS tuning. The fact of a matter is YS engines are not difficult to tune if people would learn how to listen to the engine and use their brains. Anybody with an average IQ can tune a YS.

lectronx -> RE: World Models .60 size P-51 Mustang--Petie 2nd version (1/21/2005 1:28:41 AM)

HI ALL
GETTING THE WM P-51 TODAY. LOST THREAD ON SERVOS. ARE HS-325HB's GOING TO BE ENOUGH FOR RUDDER/AILRONS/THROTTLE?? USING RETRACT SERVO HS-75BB ON GEAR AND HIGH TORQUE HS-77BB FOR FLAPS. ADDING A LITTLE STRONGER HS-475HB FOR ELEVATOR. ANY NEED FOR LOW PROFILE DEVICES? NOTHING SPECIFIED IN DOWNOADED PDF INSTRUCTIONS FOR THIS PLANE. THANKS A LOT, EDDIE

rare_bear -> RE: World Models .60 size P-51 Mustang--Petie 2nd version (1/21/2005 3:57:56 AM)

I just got my servos in today.
Here's the lineup:

JR791 - retracts (260oz)
HS645MG - flaps, elevator (106oz)
HS425BB - rudder, aielrons, throttle

lectronx -> RE: World Models .60 size P-51 Mustang--Petie 2nd version (1/23/2005 5:28:47 AM)

Thanks Bear.. I've beefed up the servo size.
Will an Optic 6 work with this WM Setup. How come the instructions with the Petie say 6-CH Radio. I bought the Hitec today but can't find a way to control all 7 servos with this six channel Tx and the Surpreme Rx????

taildraggerdave -> RE: World Models .60 size P-51 Mustang--Petie 2nd version (1/23/2005 12:59:53 PM)

Use a Y harness for the ailerons.

viper21 -> RE: World Models .60 size P-51 Mustang--Petie 2nd version (1/23/2005 6:05:06 PM)

Does anyone know where I can get a YS 110? I have been looking for one but no luck?
I will most likely run digital servos on the flight controls? I have some really nice and new Airtronics coreless non digitals I might use they came with my Stylus and I never used them. They are about 90-100 ounces of torque so they should work I think think they are 94731's and I have two new 732's I could use also. But digitals are tempting especially since I want to install a YS 110?[;)][;)]

rare_bear -> RE: World Models .60 size P-51 Mustang--Petie 2nd version (1/23/2005 6:34:38 PM)

viper,

i got mine from edwin at hobby zone in glendale. $325+tax. might be worth the trip from orange county if he has some still.

i was going to mail order through central hobbies which would have saved me the tax but they got a shipment of 50 in 2 months ago and completely filled their backorders leaving no stock. nobody else seemed to have any either.

taildraggerdave -> RE: World Models .60 size P-51 Mustang--Petie 2nd version (1/31/2005 3:37:36 AM)

Here's some photos of the retract servo installation. I do it differently than WM suggests in the manual. My way uses the retract wires straight and not bent on the ends. This makes it a whole lot easier to set and adjust the retracts. I do use their quick connects. They work very well.
The following photos are gear up, gear half way down, and gear down and locked.

taildraggerdave -> RE: World Models .60 size P-51 Mustang--Petie 2nd version (1/31/2005 3:41:26 AM)

Also,
I had the base crack on my elevator horn. My plane is pretty fast and has been flown full throttle for 90% of its life. I noticed it on a post flight inspection today. It hadn't failed completely yet but another flight and it would have gone. The 3 screw holes cracked which would allow the center of the horn to lift out and fall off. First ever failure of a WM control horn that I have seen besides a crashed horn. Put in a new and all will be well.

viper21 -> RE: World Models .60 size P-51 Mustang--Petie 2nd version (1/31/2005 5:11:31 AM)

Dave, wow thanks for the warning I will check my horns even though I have a habit of using US hardware on my ARF's. I have decided to install a 120 most likely a new Sairo 120 with an inverted pitts muffler if I can find a YS 110 I will install one of those bad boy's. I
I do have a question? Has anyone thought about installing different retracts and Robo Struts? Or using the stock mechanicals and installing Robo Struts on them with a good strong retract servo? I am wondering if the offset Robo Struts will pull the wheels up into the wheel wells and the struts up into the wing? I can dremel out the rib that the retract mounts sit on and the renforce the rib with a carbon fiber 1/8 plywood rib epoxied to the rib. I can even lower the retract mounts if the retracts cant pull the wheels and struts into the wing. I think if I am going to do that much work maybe I should go with Robart air retracts and Robo Struts as you can slip the struts into the retract trunion and tighten it down. So if anyone has made these mods or has any ideas about it I would appreciate the info.
Thanks Joe

PS: I forgot I am going to install a Jtec cockpit instrument panel kit as soon as I find the one that fits I was thinking the 1/7 or 1/6 scale version probably a combination of each. Also going to put a pilot in .
Over in the electric forum on the Ezone some guys are converting the new Miss America H9 P51 and one of them made the radiator scoop a working air outlet to cool the motor and batteries I thought it was kind of slick, http://www.rcgroups.com/forums/showthread.php?t=326856 And a retractable tailwheel. I have been thinking about the tailwheel and I am going to convert a Miss America to E power also later on after I get caught up with my projects.

rare_bear -> RE: World Models .60 size P-51 Mustang--Petie 2nd version (1/31/2005 5:23:39 AM)

thank you dave

wow, hard to believe the base cracked on the control horn. i take it that the actual elevator balsa is OK tho.

viper21 -> RE: World Models .60 size P-51 Mustang--Petie 2nd version (2/7/2005 1:03:58 AM)

Guy's, The great engine dilemma has been solved! I made a deal last night for a brand new in the box OS 120 Surpass II non pumper for allot less than if I bought it from Tower[:D][:D] Made my week I am installing it with a Slimline Inverted Pitts muffler and a new onboard glow unit I already have I just need to buy the muffler. My new engine should be here next week I am sending the money order out in the AM, I figure my Mustang should move pretty well with the OS 120 and should sound great with the muffler I am hoping that I dont have to cut too much of a hole for the rocker cover on the cylinder head. Now I need to order my Robart 551 RS retracts and offset P51 style Robo Struts. I need to reinforce the firewall with some 2 ounce glass and some triangle stock and West Epoxy. And depending on how much I need to grind out of the middle spar where the strut sits when its retracted, I am going to install a sub rib on each side laminated with carbon fiber tape. I may need to grind the retract mounts so the struts can be pulled up into the wheel wells. You guys that have been flying your Mustangs can you rate the stock mechanicals how are they holding up for you? And my last question the silver covering on the bottom of the wing looks like Silver Ultracote?
Thanks Guys as soon as finish organizing my shop I will shoot pictures of the install.
Joe

viper21 -> RE: World Models .60 size P-51 Mustang--Petie 2nd version (2/8/2005 11:28:20 PM)

Well guy's my new OS 120 Surpass II E is in the mail so I should have the engine before the weekend.[:D] I managed to get a great deal from a fellow RCU Modeler, he just didnt need it so now its mine. I wonder if I can keep the rocker cover in the cowl without having to cut it up too much. I am going to order my Robart retracts and Robo Struts this week I am going to install P51 style offset strut. I am also going to pick up an aluminum spinner, my plane calls for a 4 inch spinner so I am trying to decide between a Dave Brown and a Tru Turn and if I want to paint it Taildragger Dave?

I am planning to reinforce the retract mounts since I am installing Robart retracts and Robo Struts(Infact someone asked me about 4 pages back which model struts I am using and they are 662L and 662R they will handle up to a 3 1/4" wheels or 663 version if I need a 4" wheel. I am sure my Mustang is going to move with the 120 its nice to have the extra power when you need it.
I hope to start work this weekend if so I will post pictures.
Does anyone know what the closest match to the silver covering on the wing is I am thinking Ultracote Silver?
Thanks Guys for all the help I appreciate it and I will get some video of the plane once it fly's

JustinG -> RE: World Models .60 size P-51 Mustang--Petie 2nd version (2/8/2005 11:40:28 PM)

I bought one of these last week, I couldn't resist any longer. It will be a while yet before I am ready to fly it, but I'm sure I will have a few questions about it as I finish it out... e.g. aileron servos: y-harness or separate channels, remote glow/onboard glow driver, etc... I'm a relative newbie when it comes to warbirds and 4-stroke engines and planes of this size. I've got a saito .91 I will be putting in it and I will be flying it with a futaba 7c transmitter. This thread has been an invaluable tool in helping me decide on what to buy, you guys have already helped a ton!

I'm really looking forward to flying this plane!

viper21 -> RE: World Models .60 size P-51 Mustang--Petie 2nd version (2/9/2005 12:47:41 AM)

Justin, that's great congratulations on your new Mustang you can never have too many of them[:D] Welcome to RCU and the Warbird Forum and yes you can learn in this forum and on the site in general I still do I have been in the hobby for 20 years now. I would suggest you get some help when you are ready to maiden your Mustang they arent hard to fly but its no trainer[X(] I had thought about installing my Saito 91 in my plane but I have it tagged for another plane. So have fun and dont be afraid to ask questions the guys here are good guys they put up with my "Engine Dilemma" but its now over[:D][:D]
Viper

JustinG -> RE: World Models .60 size P-51 Mustang--Petie 2nd version (2/9/2005 1:02:01 AM)

Thanks.. No doubt, I won't be maidening the Mustang without getting plenty of help from the local club guys, a lot more experience on my trainer and on the simulator... Even though it's an ARF there are still quite a few things I need (retract servo, etc) so as tempting as it may be to take it out and try to fly it before I am ready, it just can't happen. It's going to be a while...

One thing I am good at is procrastinating, in this case that's probably a good thing... :-)

lectronx -> RE: World Models .60 size P-51 Mustang--Petie 2nd version (2/11/2005 5:47:18 PM)

taildraggerdave: "I mounted it closer to the CG so the plane will fly more consistant as the fuel level goes down" .
....Well I'm just about done building. It seemed like good advise so I built a gas tank cradle over the CG and so that the center-line of the tank (vertically) is slightlly below the highspeed needle valve of my .91. When I went to buy more hose at the local shop, I commented on the fact that the stock tank was at the CG point. I was told it's a bad idea. It was alright for level flight, but not for banking, loops, turns, and etc. Can you comment. Thanks. ec
PS. Also thanks to all whom have contributed to this thread as it has been a great aid in purchasing, building, and soon flying!
