Guy's well I got my new OS 120 Surpass II today in the mail got it from a fellow RCU member that got into sailplanes he had one used and one new for sale and I got the new one So now I ordererd a Slimline Inverted Pitts muffler for it and I already have an onboard glow for it so I dont need to worry about the plug staying lit on long finals while I get the engine broken in and the Mustang should fly pretty well I think
Before I fly the plane I need to replace the stock mechanical retracts with the Robart 551RS and the offset P51 style Robo Struts. I really dont want to recover the bottom wing because a gear collapsed plus I want to install struts. How are the stock retracts holding up for you guys that are still using them? Has anyone replaced the gear with pneumatics?
I have asked this question at least twice before since I cant get to the hobby store and the closest one is a Hobby People and they only carry Monokote anyway so here it goes. The Silver covering on the Mustang and the bottom side of the wing where I will need to make some mods to install the Robart retracts. I am guessing Silver Ultracote and I was going to order a roll what do you all think? I would appreciate any help from anyone thats had to patch their plane so I can order it this weekend?
Thank You Viper

Dave, you wrote that you bought an aluminum spinner and sprayed it with the Ultracote paint? Can you tell me which brand and size spinner you bought please? I think its a 4 inch spinner at least thats the closest I can convert from the metric measurement provided in the directions.
Thanks Dave
Joe

PS: Ya Lecs shop owner might "Be On Crack" but unless he has a YS or a pump I dont see how he can draw fuel that far no matter if its in a bank or leve?

As far as the retracts go I have already bought a second set for standby. I bend mine back into position farely frequently for my not so perfect landings on asphalt. No complete collapses so far thanks to the forum info on reinforcing the gear bays with epoxy. A duplicate replacement set is only $22. I am not experienced enough on installing the struts or Robarts for that matter.

This plane rocks!

Dave, I am sorry I thought you had painted your spinner I must be losing it I thought the plane was in this thread too? I measured the backplate on the stock spinner and it was 108mm or roughly 4" what size and brand did you buy Dave? Do you have a picture posted of your plane so I can see how it looks?

I was looking through my big Squadron Signal book today and found a whole squadron of blue nosed Mustangs the 487th fighter squadron flew them in both Band D models. The famous Cripes a Mighty had the blue nose. A little artwork and a couple of decals and you have another plane!
Thanks Joe

Hi, I'm currently about to begin construction on my WM P51D. Thanks for all the information that has already been posted here on this thread. Any other thoughts or mods before I get started that I should know about first. Thanks for any help. My setup will include a Saito 120 FS and thinking about swinging an APC 15x8 prop. Any upgrades to the fuel tank size? Also, I haven't even opened up the box. Can someone please tell me how the hardware is, oh, and if the wheels are foam or rubber. TIA,

Just so you guys know I finally purchased a radar gun for my YS110 powered Mustang. It was clocked out of a dive downwind at 139MPH. It felt good to show the naysayers that it could get up to 130!

That's good to hear but dives don't count....Needs to be straight and level when comparing speeds with other people.

Just picked up my WM P51 tonight. All looks good but one thing, the extension on the vertical stab has been put on off center and the contour of the bottom of the vertical stab does not fit very well. Both items are fixeable but, need to know what covering is needed to match. Anybody know? Maybe I should just try to get a new one all together. Anybody else had this problem?

Also did not get the pilot cap. Just the pilot, mask, and mask hose. Not a big deal as I think I may paint a pilot for it anyways.

Got a Saito 100 comming for it and was curious how it is balancing with this motor? Does it need nose wieght with this set up?

Not sure about the fit since it has been so long since I put mine together. I do remember I didn't do anything to the vertical, I just glued it it...with thick CA, no yet. Call or email Airborne Models (in Northern California) and ask them what colors and type of covering they use and while you're on the phone, tell 'em you didn't get the pilot helmet.........hope this helps.

I am just about to start my Mustang the vertical is fine I dont have any problems mine I can just epoxy my vertical to the fuselage. I am ordering my retracts tomorrow no one has them instock so I am going to have Quantam Models order them and my Robo Struts to go with them and a pair of Robart 3.5" wheels. I am pretty sure the covering is Ultracote so I am getting a rolll of silver with the retracts because I am pretty sure I will need to make some mods to install the air retracts and struts.
I have my new OS 120 Surpass for the plane and I am trying to decide if I want a Slimline inverted pitts muffler or if I want to install a set of Keleo exhaust stacks, Kelvin said he could make them but he told me he needs the engine so I need to talk with him about the exhaust and how long it would take to build them, and how loud they would be. I will most likely go with the Slimline.
