Have a friend with 3 RCV .60s powering a scale JU-52--He is having trouble with the engines overheating and losing about 600RPM on the top-end--the outboard engines seem to have a large inflow and outflow area for air, he is running 14x14 apc props

Hi

Thanks for posting. It is difficult to diagnose what the problem could be without seeing a photo of the plane, or without further information ie. what rpm he is achieving on the 14x14 props, however bearing in mind all three of the engines are overheating - I can only assume there is something wrong in the setup. Here are a few suggestions
1) check the airflow, the air outlet should be at least twice as big and preferably 3x as big as the air inlet. One of the most common reasons for overheating is that hot air gets trapped in the cowl. If your friend has followed these rules, it may also be beneficial to create an air scoop in the cowl to direct airflow over the engine.
2) ensure that the engines are run in for 1-2 hours on a bench before installing on a plane
3) ensure your friend is using a recommended 4-stroke fuel (ie. one containing 10% nitro and between 14-17% oil) eg. Wildcat Premium 10%, Morgan Omega 10%, Byron Premium 10%). We recommend that the oil content also includes some castor as this can aid cooling (all of the fuels mentioned above do use a castor/synthetic mix).

I hope this gives some ideas
Best regards
Laurenne

Thank you,, I thing ducting the air is going to be his fix, Do yall recomend another prop other than the APC, It seems like i read something about that,, The engines have plenty of break-in, and the fuel is right, The rpms are around 5500 to 5700, but it drops off pretty quick once the heating starts,,, Here is a pic of the plane, I will try and get a closer pic of the engine/cowl setup... Thank You for your quick responce

Hi
I hope that works.
With regard to rpms, the average rpm on a 14x14 prop is 5300, so after drop off if he is getting around this figure, there may not be a problem. RCV engines do run hotter than conventional engines. Ducting the air should help anyway.

With regard to other props, master airscrew, bolly, zinger & graupner all do propellers that can be used with RCV engines. The only thing you have got to ensure is that the pitch is big enough for the SP series engines. The minimum pitch size for SP engines is 10, with 12 or more being preferable.

I hope this helps
Best regards
Laurenne
