Hello All,
I am very confused as to which motor to put on the giant scale Top Flite P51? I am researching the project, wondering cost and such but I cannot get a handle on which motor. I am not looking to hover the Stang or break low altitude speed records... I just want to know which motor will fly the plane well.
I am not a believer in flying 1/2 throttle or less and having that "other half" of the throttle in reserve just in case... I would like to fly the plane using the whole throttle and theoretically not get into the trouble that I would need the "other half" of the throttle to get out of... Thank you for your time and concern.

justrfb, You cant go wrong with either a zenoah G62 or a G45 for the TF mustang. Either one will fly it fine and be very reliable.

I too am researching the TFp-51 giant engine possiblities. fw190d9 I don't recall anyone else recomending the g-45, an engine I too have been considering. But the Majority of those I have asked feel the G62 is the way to go.
I do however disagree with one thing and it is my personal opinion. every aircraft should have at least 30% or more throttle in reserve when at a cruising speed. Real aircraft do not fly at full throttle, they only apply it when needed.
Just my thoughts.

Hi,
I replied to Gremlins on this subject.I have a G-62 in mine and it is awesome.I had a Moki 1.8,and it definitely was not enough.I live near Allentown,pa,(I used to live in Flanders, and Higland Lakes,Nj)and will show you it fly with the G-62.Send me an e-mail if you are interested.Good luck!!

I have a Brison 2.6 in mine (actually it's an old Sacks Dolmer but I had Brison put in a new crank and a larger carb). It is pulling 18lbs static thrust on my "fish scale" and the plane weights in at 20 lbs. I'll let you know how it flys after the test flight next week. I had the engine on a 20 lb Pica 1/6 scale Spitfire and it flew very scale. Never had any problems with insufficient power. Clearly there was no hanging on the prop but it pulled nicely through a loop if you entered with enough speed - quite scale like actually.

Gremlins2g, I only included the G45 for those who think that you shouldnt have an overpowered warbird. I myself belive that you can never have too much power in a heavy warbird. Just look at the planes on my website. The G62 is definately the way to go on this warbird. If you like to maintain the scale looks of your plane and you dont mind a little extra work, try one of the rear carbureted engines that are available, i.e. the ZDZ 60 or the 3w-60i. Both engines will keep the sides of your cowling clean and will provide ample power for those "non scale" warbird speeds and manuevers.

Did the test flight with the Sachs 2.6 this morning. Power was marginal. I would say it flew a little subscale. Loops require full throttle entry. Landing with full flaps required about 1/3 throttle right onto the deck. If I had to do it again I'd go a little larger - either a G62 or a Brison 3.2.

As far as flying characteristic are concerned - it's quite docile. at full up elevator and idle it just mushes around the sky - no violent tendencies. Take offs and landings were no problem, even with the marginal power.

good to hear about the flight characteristics being so docile.

I never felt there was anything wrong with having some reserve power. I don't believe any engine should have to run above 3/4 throttle to maintain its flying speed and do some mild aerobatics. If you can fly at 1/2 or just above I personaly believe ya got enough under the (hood)cowl.

JIM A -

From a Power to Rate Ratio and overall value consideration, please do yourself a favor and consider the TSS 52 or TSS 62 from taurus-engines.net and talk with Bill O.

I can assure you that you won't be dis-appointed.
