sh0wtime -> RE: New Novarossi .21?? (3/4/2004 9:10 PM)

yeah i was going on the pdf too[8|]
but i've actually looked at the liner & it is indeed brass[:D]

the porting inside looks real nice too[8D]

the 53 pipe sounds like the one to have thenbetter than a 63 & less thirsty than the 86!
good midrange pipe then[:D]

sh0wtime -> RE: New Novarossi .21?? (3/5/2004 10:10 AM)

i whipped the carb off to see the epoxy resin in the crankshaft & its there allright[:D]
thats normally only found on high end On-road Race engines!
i think the 421b may be the first Buggy engine to have that[:D]
its there to more smoothly direct the incoming mixture through the crank & into the engine[;)]
the more i look over the 421 the better it seems to be[:D]

RobH -> RE: New Novarossi .21?? (3/5/2004 5:39 PM)

It's called "stuffing the crank". It increases the compression in the crankcase under the piston. You reduce the volume in the case and you can shoot fuel into the piston chamber better. Some airplane guys will put epoxy in the crankcase on purpose to achieve this.

I'm getting a good schooling at the engine shop when I manage to get up there. [:D]

fhm101 -> RE: New Novarossi .21?? (3/5/2004 6:00 PM)

The more I learn, the more I like.
That brown head wouldn't be a Crono variant would it Adam?

sh0wtime -> RE: New Novarossi .21?? (3/5/2004 9:11 PM)

Brown[:'(]
LOL its the Black headed Top version[;)]
see below[:D]

fhm101 -> RE: New Novarossi .21?? (3/5/2004 11:00 PM)

Sorry about that. I'm so FOS everything dark takes on a brown cast from the backup.

sh0wtime -> RE: New Novarossi .21?? (3/7/2004 8:23 PM)

tried the 421b today & it was not what i'd expected[:'(]
the thing would barely run & blew a plug within 1 lap[:o]
i tried for ages to get some kind of tune on the engine & it was different everytime i closed the throttle, sometimes raced away other times just cut[:@]
i fitted an old RB carb i had in my toolbox & the engine was instantly better[;)]
still not as fast as i thought it would be though[:o]
i was using the 6mm restrictor so i'll try it with a bigger venturi & see if things improve?

overall i'd say fairly good engine with an unusable carb!
Not particularly happy that i bought another one last week[&o]

Smokey -> RE: RE: New Novarossi .21?? (3/7/2004 8:41 PM)

perhaps u got a dud, maybe the next one will be better, lets hope novarossi doesn't go O.S on us :)

sh0wtime -> RE: RE: New Novarossi .21?? (3/8/2004 9:47 AM)

pretty mucheverybody i know who's tried Novarossi instead of RB has been disappointed in them[:'(]
3 of us are now using the RB carbs as the only way to keep them running with any sort of consistency[:o]
wish i'd never bothered[:@]

MiCkLe207 -> RE: RE: New Novarossi .21?? (3/8/2004 3:46 PM)

The Novarossi P5 Rocks for me already!!
Maybe since i jumped from a hyper 8port[:D]
Huge difference!!

sh0wtime -> RE: RE: New Novarossi .21?? (3/8/2004 9:16 PM)

how do you find the NR carbs?
but then i suppose anythings better than a Hyper carb LOL[:D]

SLAM!!

LOL. You said it wasn't as fast as expected. What it faster than a P5 (top-end wise)? How about acceleration? more bottom-end than a P5?

sh0wtime -> RE: RE: New Novarossi .21?? (3/9/2004 9:49 AM)

hard to say Rob!
the only way it ran was with a carb off an old WS7 that i quickly popped on before the 3rd qualifier
this had a 6mm venturi in soheld it back a bit, the carb i took off was a 9mm carb with 8 mm venturi so i need to try a WS7II carb with 8mm venturi to see how it goes[8|]
the engine is quite nice, reasonably punchy etc but was just a bit of a disappointment really[:o]
the best engine i've ever used was a RB C4. ballistic off the bottom & a screamer up top[:D]
why cant all engines be like that?[&o]

MiCkLe207 -> RE: RE: New Novarossi .21?? (3/10/2004 3:23 PM)

Hey peeps! Anyone of you find the P5 a pain to tune?! well I do! I kinda think the problem maybe from the Hyper PBS's Air filter tube. Dont you think it's a bit too long? I think the length of it effects airflow[:o]

sh0wtime -> RE: RE: New Novarossi .21?? (3/10/2004 8:14 PM)

its nothing to do with the airfilter mounting tube length, its more to do with the crap carburettor[8|]
i know 2 people using P5's & theirs are awful too[:'(]
fitting an RB carb will cure your problems [;)]
it will be instantly better[:D]

i am really disappointed with my Novarossis & just wish i'd stayed RB[&o]

fhm101 -> RE: RE: New Novarossi .21?? (3/11/2004 3:21 AM)

A while back here in the US there was a rash of RB WS7 carbs that were giving folks screaming fits to get and keep tuned. The problem turned out to be a batch of high speed needles that were cut an RCH too small allowing air to leak past the O ring seal on the HS needle. The fix was to put a piece of Great Planes white shrink wrap in the HS needle O ring land, refit the ring and reinstall the HS needle with a dab of grease on the ring. Since Nova and RB both use Nova carbs, maybe it's the same thing again in the Nova carbs?
For that it's worth, I've been running Nova based Berg XR's and Crono RS5's for quite a while now as have many of my friends, and I have yet to hear a single complaint from any of them about tuning.

sh0wtime -> RE: RE: New Novarossi .21?? (3/11/2004 9:51 AM)

i'm off work next week so i'll have a bit of time to fiddle around with things so i'll get my Digital calipers out & have a measure up on my carbs!
good idea, thanks for the heads up [;)]
i'll let you know if i find anything

fhm101 -> RE: RE: New Novarossi .21?? (3/11/2004 6:53 PM)

I guess I should have offered to take those ill mannered Nova's off your hands before I mentioned the HS needle thing. Oh well, live and learn.
J/K of course, please let us know if you discover any issues with those carbs. Inquiring minds want to know.

sh0wtime -> RE: RE: New Novarossi .21?? (3/11/2004 9:35 PM)

i will trade my 421's [;)]
C5 Rody anybody?[:D]

RobH -> RE: RE: New Novarossi .21?? (3/12/2004 12:29 AM)

Our local engine guru says "P5! P5! P5!". I think it's parially because of our short track. I was just on the phone with him and I nailed him down on the P5 carbs. His answer: very very small increments when changing needle settings. When some people tune, they jump as much as 2 hours in any direction. That will take you from 200 degrees to 260 degrees on a P5. Don't turn it 1/8th of a turn. Use 1/12th turns at the very most. Sometimes, you'll put the screw driver in there and just barely move the screw. He also said to run it for at least 30 seconds for the new setting to take effect.

It sounds like the P5 carbs ARE touchy -- not impossible, but require a very very fine tune. Maybe that 421 is the same?

sh0wtime -> RE: RE: New Novarossi .21?? (3/12/2004 1:04 AM)

maybe?
i'll try the original carb on a practice day! thats what they're there for[;)]

Sounds like very good advice to me. Tuning should always come first during practice and be rechecked every warmup period.
Almost forgot, a quick check for a faulty HSN seal is to put a drop of fuel on top of the HSN while the engine is running and see what happens.

MiCkLe207 -> RE: RE: New Novarossi .21?? (3/12/2004 5:38 PM)

Hey!! Problem solved!!
I found it alot easier to tune using 30% byrons instead of 25%[:D]

RobH -> RE: RE: New Novarossi .21?? (3/12/2004 9:36 PM)

fhm101, I take it the drop of fuel should just sit there? not drain into the carb? Also what about fuel comming out of the HSN? same problem? I have this OS carb on my basher engine (might go to my son's buggy). I've seen fuel come out the HSN before.

fhm101 -> RE: RE: New Novarossi .21?? (3/12/2004 10:51 PM)

If you have a leak the engine will change speeds with no throttle input when you put the drop of fuel on the HSN. Don't know what to tell you about the OS. As long as it's running good and the mess is not too much trouble, I'd run it. I've seen old OS carbs where the HSN is so loose that engine vibration will change the settings, but a new O ring will fix most of those.
