The Bandit, weighing in at about 21 lbs, has a claimed top speed of 240 mph, any challenges?
I've heard of Kevlar jets reaching 280+ mph - Would this be in level flight or in or out of a dive?
What amounts of stresses arise at these speeds?

I don't know how many of you have herd of the Antonov An2 biplane. it is a 12 passenger biplane with a 9 cylinder radial engine that puts out 1001hp. you can get one for as little as 20,000 and as much as 110,000. depending on the year and what the previous own installed

Just my opinion, but in my experience with full scale flying, you need to spend no more than HALF the funds you have available, put the rest in a savings account and it will dwindle pretty fast on insurance, hangar rental, scheduled maintenance, unscheduled maintenance, annuals and overhauls. I hate watching guys spend all their money on the plane and then it sits on the ground with grass growing up around it because they don't have it in their budget to pay for insurance and maintenance. Or worse yet, they fly it without spending the money they need to to keep it maintained right. Just my opinion though...

While the lancair may have a VNE of 235 knots their cruise speed is higher. Remember that is indicated airspeed. At altitude the indicated speed will be lower that the true airspeed.
My dad and I have been looking into buying an RV-7 kit.
If you want a bigger plane to transport models in I would suggest a Cessna 210. However being a high performance retractable the maintanence and insurance cost's will be high. A cheaper option may be a Cherokee 6.
Remember to allow for extra cost when buying your plane.

Some 310 owners were saying plan on an operating cost of no less than $250 per hour. Ouch.

I have a 320. I wish it were only $250 an hour to fly! You can almost double it after the exhaust AD.

Gentlemen

Again thanks for all the help. It is greatly appreciated.

Peter

Peter,
When considering and aircraft, "mission" is everything. You don't start with how many engines or seats it has, or even how fast it is. You START with how YOU are going to USE it 90% of the time.

If money means nothing to you, then God bless you and forget anything I say after this sentence. But if you have to work for a living like most of us, you want to fit the aircraft you buy to the purpose you are using it for.

Do you REALLY expect to fly more than 2 people more than 90% of the time? If not, then you're spending lot's of money to haul those empty two seats behind you.
How fast do you really NEED to go considering how you want to travel? (Speed costs $$$)
That's only a couple of questions you have to evaluate before you choose an aircraft.

As only an example (and NOT a recommendation for you unless you have the same mission as me), I wanted a fast (200mph) aircraft that would carry two people plus reasonable baggage and IFR when so desired. Plus, I do NOT have an unlimited budget so economy of acquisition and economy of ownership figured in heavily to my decision.
So what I did was to buy a Van's Aircraft RV7-A Quickbuild kit.
It's an honest 200mph aircraft for long cross country trips.
It's a side by side 2-place which is all I ever need for most of my flying. If I need to (occasionally) carry more than 2 people, it's a lot cheaper to simply rent than it is to own a larger aircraft.
As an Experimental, I, the builder, am legally allowed to do ALL my own maintenance, repair and annuals. How's that for economy?
It will cruise at 195mph at just under 10 gal. fuel per hour. How's that for economy?

If I didn't want to build, but my mission being what it is, I (and this is just me) would have probably looked at the Mooney.
However, an RV7-A with brand new engine and state of the art IFR avionics can be built for about $80,000. So my comparison is that I could have bought a brand new Mooney at $300,000, or build an (all brand new) RV7-A that performs the same as a Mooney but for 1/4 the cost. Plus, the view is better if you've ever seen one of Van's RV aircraft

The purchase price of an aircraft is only a small part of total ownership cost so don't spend all you have up front, but whatever you do, sit down are write down the parameters that have to be met to fulfil your mission profile. Any aircraft you buy that goes beyond that is money flushed down the drain.

RV-10 is what I have my eyes on right now too. Found a guy who can put it togther for me for good price on the quick build.

I don't think dollar for dollar it can be beat in all around, but that's this week.

If I had 125K to spend, I'd look for a Courier (Helio Aircraft) and sign a note for the rest. The company has been revamped and has jumped through all the FAA hoops, and they're gonna be built again, plus there's lots out there in good shape. 145kt cruise, take off and land in about 300 feet at max gross, 6 passenger, will fly as slow as 27 kts fully controllable. 245hp Lycoming. The cabin area has a steel tubular frame, lots of structural integrity, and a large loading door on the left side. Damned impressive plane, I think.
