Spur gears SHOULD be plastic! Metal ones are too heavy, and there really isn't a lot of stress put on this gear (unlike the small pinions, which HAVE to be metal!), as long is the mesh is set OK. Yes, you can buy steel spurs, but it's kinda silly....new plastic ones are maybe $5. Delrin is a better plastic than nylon, but steel spurs sap a fair amount of power, overall. Spurs die from stuff getting caught in them (debris, wires, rodents), impacts that mess up the drivetrain in general and from improper setuop. They do NOT seem to die due to "old age", however powerful your engine is! And despite the Maxx's appetite for drive shafts & diffs, MOST .21 upgraders seem to do pretty darn well with the stock tranny, too!! A steel top shaft is a good idea, but only when something fails, and that really doesn't happen too often. And lotsa people at this stage in their Maxxness switch to forward-only, which itself brings nicely made gears to the tranny to help beef it up. No surpise to me that the tranny & spurs are holding up!! Dean
