I received a diesel engine for Christmas and just got a gallon of fuel. Some questions on handling the fuel:

Is it advisable to divide the fuel into smaller containers. If so, any recommendations what kind and where they can be obtained.

How do you transfer the fuel from can to tank - fuel bulb, pump, etc.

How long will a gallon last in the can?

If I need to add ether and use John Deer starting fluid, how do I get the ether from the starting fluid can to the fuel?

Any help will be appreciated.

Freeze the can of ether, then either spray into an empty container or turn the can upside down, release the propellent, open with a can opener and pour.

You need a metal can with a tightly fitting cap to store the ether in. I use an 8 oz. plummers solvent container ( the "cleaner" which is MEK + Acetone, emptied of course ) and seal the lid with teflon tape.

I think people use a closed system for transfer.
ie a metal cap with two brass tubes soldered, so fuel can be transferred without uncapping. Connect the two tubes with a short piece of fuel line when not in use. The shorter the better, because apparently the ether leaches through plastic as well. Tightly capped the fuel will last, uncapped ???

I mix my fuel as I use it, in a 100cc urine specimen cup for smaller amounts and a 16 oz. smoke tank for larger amounts
