stan's fiber tech was sold and it is now at www.fibertechnmore.com but the site isn't built yet. i emailed to see when they're going to be ready.
i've since chopped the canopy to single place and i'm completing a new one piece top deck. the plane was so banged up i had nothing to lose so i'm trying a couple of different things. i hope it flies well with the g23 i'm going to put on it.
bart

Came back to look around. I went to the Fibertechnmore site and see they are fully functional now and offer several items for the 1/4 Extra.
Cowl $41.95
Canopy $24.95
Front hatch $19.95
pants $37.95
Turtle deck $32.95

I am interested in the turtle deck and will inqure as to the waight to see if it is worth replacing the ABS one. I beleive the fiber is lighter than the ABS.

I decided to use the ABS turtle deck. I don't think the weight saving is that much with the FG one. I also added a floor to the canopy frame for the cockpit area.

Nauset,

You could be surprised by how some FG parts can be extremely light compared to the ABS ones. I am building a TF Spitfire that comes with ABS fuse fairings. I decided to create the same parts on FG and I was surprised by the difference in weight. I do not remember the numbers right now, but easily the new parts weight less than 50% of the ABS ones.

Just to give you a hint.

Pedro

I may just build a balsa sheeted turtle deck just keeping the ABS around the fin and stab.
I got the wing roots finished and set the incidence. That completes the construction steps (unless I build a wood turtle deck) so I have also started installing the radio equipment.

I have heard and read that these planes are notorious for ripping off the landing gear (along with LG1) on anything more than a perfect landing. So I used two pieces of 1-1/4" x 1/16" aluminum angle stock to firmly tie LG1 to LG2. It is thru bolted to LG2 and will be sandwiched between LG1 and the landing gear.

OK,  I think I lost my mind and bought a 1/4  lanier extra 300s.     It seemed like a great deal.
Got the plane, all the hardware ,     two gas engines -   a 30 and a 35 with electronic ignition.
Four new Hitec servo's ,  the big one's with kyptonite gears or something.
came with two cowlings.    3 rolls of covering.
Has the styrofoam core wings with balsa skins.

all for a grand total of $160 .

The plane was mostly put together but needs covering,  radio and engine installed.

I have a giant roll of building blue prints/ plans but is there a place online that has PDF flles of the plans ?

Does anyone live near macon,GA that would want to finish this thing ?       Or did I just step into a bottomless money pit ?

Depends on the engines but the price sounds pretty good with what you got. The Karbonite gears aren't supposed to be used on planes with big control surfaces or gas engines but I have gotten away with using them on some applications on gassers. I think you did OK but it depends?

Several years after I bought out a companies close out supply of there really good KN geared servos Hitec finally posted on there site the statement about not using them on gassers and planes over 60 size or planes like the 3-D types with large control surfaces. The reason is the gears are too brittle and crack and break under vibration or if your controls create too much load or have a hard landing and the controls snap.
Of course I have a box full of the really good ones with plenty of speed and torque. I have stripped the aileron servos gears when I was having an RF hit/problem but never put two and two together at the time. Someone here on RCU mentioned this to me so I phoned Hitec and was told about it then went to there web site and read the warning. I got my servos on sale but they were retailed at over $100.00 a piece and the new replacement servo had metal gears. And no, there is no metal gear replacement for my servos.
I would have to go out and check the number on them but I think they are there 6985s?? I still use them in some gassers but I make sure they are mounted away from the engines vibration and watch how I mount them for the different controls.
I sure have a lot of them!! Haven't bought a KN geared servo sense and never recommend them to anyone. Why buy a servo with limitations?
What brand of engines came with your score?? Depending on the make you could sell one and pay for your complete score.

I got the turtledeck mounted with thin CA as per the inst. I used some filler around the fin and microballoons and epoxy to form a small fillet where it meets the stab. I used the corner of a credit card to form the fillet. I plan to paint the turtledeck next before covering the fuse and tail parts. I also used filler on the stab to feather out the line of the glass cloth holding the stab halves together.

The turtledeck is all painted. I went back and forth for some time trying to decide on whether to paint it first and then mount it after the fuse was covered or mount it first. I did a test by gluing a piece of scrap ABS to monokote and it did not hold well at all so that was the deciding factor. The ABS does make a good bond with wood using thin CA. Also I think it was much easier to handle while spraying when able to hold the plane at various angles. Also it would have been hard to mount the TD and then apply and sand the filler without screwing up the paint job. Here are some pics.

The project is progressing along. I completed the covering and started applying some graphics. After looking at graphics suppliers and seeing the cost I came up with the idea of purchasing some replacement graphics from Sig for their 1/4 scale Extra ARF (the purple one). I got them a few years ago for $11. Not a bad deal. I'm not sure if they are still available I think they discontinued that Model. I also had some cut vinyl graphics made for the wings with a tribute to Lanier RC. I got them from B & E Graphix. http://www.bandegraphix.com/ they did a nice job and the price was good.
