Let's see. You're post #150, and Ty Brown was supportive sometime back. That's two people....

You're right, I guess all of the rest of us have brought this on ourselves. I blame myself that CJM lost my gear and never notified me, and I blame myself that CJM seems to be the only gear manufacturer out there who continues to use cheap plastic air fittings that break easily. Finally, I blame my self that they consistently fail to answer e-mails and stonewall on the phone. It really is my fault, thanks!

Hey juvatwad, Man you seem way too uptight! Or maybe it's just that your reading comprehension isn't quite up to snuff?
Okay, I don't want to get into a flame war here, but the tone of your reply leads me to believe that you didn't really get my message. I did say that I'm sure some complaints are valid, and I did say that some folks refuse to accept blame when things are their own fault. And some folks just like to jump on the bandwagon. Your reaction would lead me to believe that you may be one of those people. Notice I said "may be"!
I have heard all of the complaints about CJM for a long time. I have had problems with CJM gear too...but until Ty filled me in on the proper maintenance of them, I never did any either, hence my problems. Maybe Ty can explain the required maintenance, I'm sure he can do better than I. I have seen a couple of other folks have CJM gear fail on landing...but upon looking at the wreckage, a couple of times the angle of the gear was incorrect, compounded by very hard, cross wind landings (both of these were on FW-190D's by the way).
Robart also makes a decent product, although I've only used them a couple of times, so I can't really say too much. However, I have heard complaints about them too.
Also, I never said CJM was the best or the only product out there, of course they are not. In my book, Sierra Precision makes the best gear around. I have personally never used Shindin gear, but I have heard lot's of very good things about them as well. I guess in the long run, you get what you pay for...if you want to spend $350 for a set of retracts, then you are limited in choices...no manufacturer that I know of holds a gun to your head and makes you buy their product. I think it's the buyers job to research what he is purchasing. There has been a lot of knocking of CJM for several years now, so I'm sure if you do your research you should be able to make an informed decision. On the other hand if you are fortunate enough to always be able to afford $500 or $600 for Sierra gear, by all means go for it!
Probably the main reason that I use CJM gear is the price. I can't always afford to put Sierra gear in a bird that I'm building just to have some fun with...wish I could though.
So I guess what I'm going to end this one with is this. In RC warbirds, there is a finite customer base, if a company cotinues to put out an obviously inferior product, they won't stay around for too long. CJM has been around for quite a while so unless most of us warbird nuts are all stupid, they must still be doing something right somewhere.
Happy modeling,
Rob Bailey / Pickupsticks

Well, you really haven't said anything at all. My comprehension is fine, but it's sometimes difficult to understand people who speak out of both sides of their ------. You really shouldn't insult my intelligence, because you'll lose that one everytime; so if you'd like to make a point, try to make it then move on.

The overall tone of those who have participated in this particular thread is that CJM gear are generally inferior in construction, and that the company is definitely inferior with respect to customer service. You may not have read my earlier post regarding my personal experiences with their gear, or you wouldn't have come back with that lame "band wagon" argument. By the way, that's not something you can qualify with "maybe" (one word, not two) once you lay it out there.

Obviously people can and should research a product before they buy, and I hope this thread leads many of them to another gear manufacturer. The bottom line is this: R/C retracts are not sophisticated pieces of machinery. For their price, they should be reliable right out of the box, not require maintenance after every 1-2 flights, and be backed by responsive, solid customer support. CJM gear in the .60 to .90 range fail three out of three.

This thread has gotten pretty hot in more ways than one. Everybody has the right to their opinion IE some people wouldn't own a Ford if you put a gun to their head because they have had bad luck with them in the past. I myself wouldn't own a Chevy, have had bad luck with them. I hate to draw a comparison to cars here but it seems relevent. I own two pair of C/J retracts, one pair that has made some pretty hard landings in a 13lb 190D9 with no problems. The other pair had to go back because they didn't fit properly and a second time because they didn't work properly. So I guess that's 50% good or bad luck depending on how you look at it. Anyway enough said, am afraid of being attacked.
