I need help determining what to use for templates to spray markings on a scale warbird. I have used masking paper stuck down with Dupont 77 but the edges begin peeling up as soon as I hit it with either water or oil based paint. Surely the big boys use something to get those beautiful roundels or stars without it turning loose or the paint bleeding under it. Thanks.

Go to the local art supply store and pick up a product called Friskett Paper. It is a low tack paper that is great for using to make templates.

Also comes as Frisket Film. Both gloss and matte. Art stores have it in sheets and in rolls. It is definitely low tack so be sure to burnish it down well to prevent bleed. Regards.

I think what you are referring to is an anti-bleed coat. Situation with direct spraying on to a masked surface is that it can soften up the mastic or of the sealing is not perfect, the new paint will run underneath-or bleed. Frisket does not have a heavy strength attachment binder. You need to shoot a clear first.

Just get some sort of fast drying acrylic-lacquer or acrylic-enamel in a fine spraying hand bomb. Test it to the side for coating information, then give the masked edges a shot. This will stop the pealing up and the bleeding. Then in 5-10 minutes begin your color application.

Try your local automotive paint supplier, ask for spray mask or paint mask. It is professional grade frisket available in many widths on rolls. Generally you can but it by the yard and it is not cheap.

However it will adhere properly, there will be no bleed or creep and it will lift cleanly without damage to the base paint.

I supply custom cut spray mask for several customers who build competition scale aircraft and want the markings, etc., painted on. Contact me if you can't find any and I will supply you with it. I order it whenever I have requests for it so it is fresh stock.

I use the good o'l shelf liner from Home Depot, I buy the clear ones. I draw my decals on the computer (this same machine I am typing on right now), print out the size I want. Then I place the clear shelf liner and trace out the decals with a fineline sharpie, I peal the backing and stick it on my plane, I proceed by cutting the decals directly on the model with a fresh xacto, being very carefull of course ( I dont think this method will work well on open structures). Spraying a few light coats first, this is important even on a very pricy frisket materials. I have noticed that the shelf liner works well on paints that dry fairly quickly, like Testors and K&B paints. Its not compatible with all paints.... such as TopFlite spray paints, this paint eats the material and leaves residue on the plane's surface.

For me its cheap and it works, you'll have to play with it. All my warbirds have used the clear shelf liner....

Thanks for the info. guys. You've made my day. I'm on my third F4F-4 Wildcat with folding wings. The plane gets a lot of attention but the markings look like heck. If I can find a way to scrape the latex down smooth I will repaint them or if not start planning the next one. Thanks again, Jim Harder, Borger, Texas.

If you are not dead set on painting the markings on, you might use what most of the Jet guys use. Dry transfer markings from either ProMark or Aeroloft. These go on much easier, and are perfect representations of the particular marking. They do have to be clear coated to be fuel proof and durable. Price of these markings is not cheap.

Sorry if I already inquired about this, I am getting forgetful. Can you use .ai (adobe illustrator) files to cut these masks? What width is your masking material?

TIA

I have used Contact brand clear repositional shelf paper for years. Its low tack but has enough adhesive to seal edges perfectly. It is not paper but viynal and has a little stretch to it to go around compound curves. Its cheap and you can get it almost anywhere even when you run out at midnight and just have to finish the project for the scale contest the next day. Don

In response to Mr_Matt,

I can cut from Illustrator files (ai.eps or Mac Illustrator files). Files need to be lines (stroke) only, no fills. Best to set the stroke color to represent the mask color and have each color on separate layers.

Since I almost exclusively do decals for modelers, my cutter is limited to 11 1/2" width cutting path (12" material) and unlimited length.

Drop an email if you need more specs or a sample of the masking material.

Thanks,
