I have been reading alot of posts and am getting really interested in building a plane from scratch. I have built a few planes from a kit, and would like to take a stab at a self built. My question would be where can I go to find some good plans? Also, where do you guys get your wood from? Thanks for all the help.

Here's a few. http://maryjo3.freeyellow.com/

Some more. http://www.aerotech-rc.com/plans/

And that's all I can really answer. But with what little balsa building I've done I have bought all my balsa from the LHS.

I have a large bag of plans that was once owned by a friend of mine that loved to scratch build. Let me know what type of plane that you are interested in building.

I've purchased plans from every major magazine, some plans houses (Vintage R/C Plans comes to mind). Peruse the mags / net and see what you like, order the plans. MAN has a good web based interface to their plans, I think they even list part of the construction article.

If you have a truely OUTSTANDING LHS (local hobby store), you might be able to get good wood at a reasonable price. For me personally, I've ordered wood from Balsa USA and Lone Star. Mostly good experiences. I've seen an order from Superior Balsa that looked very good. I'm sure my next order will come from Superior.

What kind of project are you looking for? Scale, sport, glow, electric, etc?

Good luck. It is a pretty good feeling when you finally see something you build fly. I'll bet it is an even bigger rush to design and see it fly (something I've never done).

Thanks everyone for your replys :-)

I think for my first scratch built I'm going to try and find what looks to be an easy one and go for it. After I get one or two under my belt, I would really like to try a Scale warbird.

Some of the sites that I have been seeing list the plans in a file format that I have not seen before (I didn't write them down, but I think it was something like .wmf.....I guess it would be a CAD extension). I do not have a CAD program and am wondering if it would be a good idea to get one. Anyone have any good advice on which one to get? Something not too expensive, but would allow me to view these plans, and eventually maybe design my own. Thanks for all of the input.
