I've recently purchased a Savage 25 and am concerned about the engine temperature. I've run a good 15 or so tanks through it without any problems but just the other day it overheated on me. I quickly found what I believe to be the problem. The cooling tower had come slightly loose. I took off the cooling tower and there doesn't seem to be any damage. Put it all back together and made sure everything was good and tight.

My question is, what should I do to keep the temps down? I bought a temp gauge and after 4 high speed passes the engine temp (measured by pointing the temp gauge down toward the glow plug) is as high as 310 degrees! I've been told that the .25 can handle this temperature but it's REALLY pushing the edge and I would rather not do that. I've placed my hand near the exhaust outlet and it's spitting out some liquid and always puts out a decent trail of smoke. I really don't have a lot of nitro tuning experience, so I really don't know what to do. Should I richen the HSN (or perhaps the LSN) more? Are there other things that I should do to bring down the temps? Or is the engine just not capable of running at high speeds for very long? Should I be running it in shorter high speed bursts with more time at lower speed/idling? For what it's worth, ambient temperature here (Northern Virginia) is around 45-50 degrees right now.

Any suggestions from someone with more experience than I have would be much appreciated (the more detailed the better, as I'm pretty much a newb)! I fully expect to break things on my truck, that's the nature of the hobby.... but I'd rather not start with a relatively expensive part like the engine!

Thanks,
-Cambion

I'm running "Sidewinder Backyard Basher" 20% fuel.

(Edit: I suppose I should also mention that I recently replaced the stock air filter with a Motor Saver filter. I understand that because this is a high flow filter it is likely to require richening the fuel mixture. I did richen the HSN slightly after installing this filter.)

Okay, I'll try that tomorrow morning. Hopefully that's all it'll take to put things back in order.

Thanks for the advice!

After break-in I leaned the HSN, but never a lot. I only leaned it enough to get it to hit 2nd gear and then perhaps 1/8th turn more. That's pretty much why I'm so concerned about the temps. I didn't think I was running lean, though I suppose it's possible.
