I just installed a new header and tuned pipe from Dynamite RC. I love the sound of the new system but I am having some problems. I can't seem to get the tune up right. It idles erraticly and goes dead after a couple of minutes, it also run hotter than it did. About 50 degrees hotter. I checked the glow plug and it is an ashy white color. I have already richened the needles some and it has helped lower the temps, but can the other problems be caused by the new pipe. Please help!

Start by replacing the ashy white glow plug. It's toast.

If you're coming on the pipe at a higher RPM than before, or if you never really
had the effects of a tuned pipe before... it will require more richness, as you've seen.
It's highly possible that before you figured this out, you simply blew the plug.

All these problems started when I replaced the exhaust. It may be purely coincidental. I have run about 1 and a half gallons thru the engine, and I have recently changed the brand of fuel, from Traxxas Top Fuel to a Maxy's( a brand that the LHS recommended). Has anyone heard of it? Could it be the fuel causing the problem? I new to nitro r/c and any help is greatly appreciated.

Actually if you got the right maxy's it should work well in that 2.5! But beware that it is a pure racing fuel as it does not have as much oil in it to lubricate the motor properly...Its only 8% and the other brands like monster horspowere trinity and such come in 8%-16%. I dont know what top fuel is but its probably around 12-15%.

But the maxys fuel is what many of the TQ's use at tracks all around the world...and the ones at our track right here in largo, fl. And its even made here in florida.

It's 20% Maxy's and now that you mention it, it does say race fuel on the jug. I am currently running the HSN 4 turns out from closed ( the factory settings per the manufacturer) would it be better to go a bit richer? I have new glow plugs on the way. I now have a new problem. The engine will not hold a steady idle, it cranks ok but after a few seconds the idle increases, engages the trans and starts creeping. It has always jerked a bit at idle, like it wanted to take off , now it does.

Idling steady then creeping up is a sign that the low end setting is too lean.
You should richen it slightly, then properly adjust the idle stop screw to
compensate for the new idle setting, if needed.

I really appreciate everyone's advice. There aren't many people around here running nitro cars or trucks, and the ones I have met are inexperienced like me. One last ? though. I have about a 1/2 gallon left of the maxys fuel, i don't want to waste it, would it hurt much to finish the jug off. I think i'll switch back to the Traxxas fuel, the maxys seems to be good fuel just maybe not well suited to my driving habits. Thanks again!

actually monster only goes to 12% oil content. I've never even heard of Maxy's fuel... I personally run Sidewinder Backyard Basher in my 2.5 with 3 gallons through, and my motor goes all day. 20% nitro 16% oil content.

actually,i found thta the HPI gas is awsome!between my savage and t-maxx it was to expensive to buy two brands of fuel and because my savage was far more expencive,i decided id rather screw up the trx 2.5($145 dollar engine) than the nitro star 2.5($260 engine) and it turns out the trx 2.5 runs better with the HPI fuel than with any other fuel(except traxxas top fuel which is rediculously over priced).

I am still having problems. I replaced the glow plug and the engine will not idle. It will crank and run for a few seconds then go dead. I figured out why it was idling up and creeping, the throttle rod was binding and not letting the carb close properly. I guess I should have checked the obvious first. I talked to a friend and he said I need to lean it out more with the new tuned pipe, but I have tried excessively lean and rich settings and nothing has worked so far. I am lost at this point.
