It was a beautiful flying day! Crisp temperatures and low wind.

I had the field to myself. Once again I want to thank the club members for a great facility.

I fired up the moments present favorite (.a 40 size profile Gee Bee) and proceeded to play.
Right in the middle of some inverted spinning and flipping around, someone walked up behind me and said, "Excuse me, sir..."
At the moment I had to ignore him and decide which was right side up on the airplane. After it was straight and level I asked, "What was that?"

He responded by "See that Coyote out there? Do you think you can bring it this way for the dogs?
"I'll give it a try" said I.
I pointed the nose of the Gee Bee to the silhouette of a dog standing on a rise in the middle of the field. The Gee Bee was there in no time and now had been reduced to a spot on the horizon. The animal looked up and stood its ground. The plane sounded like an angry bee and looked like one too! I slowed down. The next thing I know it's falling from the sky. Power on, go up. The airplane shot into the sky. Realizing I'm now in trouble because I don't know if the airplane is going away or coming back. I finally get my bearings and point it to me.

I hear the stranger key a radio, "Nix that idea." he said.

I landed the airplane and looked for the animal, it did a 180 and headed the other way. I turned to talk to the stranger and he was already in his truck leaving.
I don't think I'll try to round up Coyotes anymore.
There's no end to the fun of R/C.

It is probally a real good idea to leave all the wild life alone. It cannot only lead to a great airplane wreck, but it is most likley against the law in most states. Good Luck, Dave

The story would have been better if you crashed into the guys truck. Is Coyote hunting with dogs a big deal in Ohio? I don't remember that sport growing up there. I know that some may think they are a nuisence but they do help keep rodent populations in check. Jeez Pat, what other spontaneous things can we get you to do with your plane?

Yes, stay away from wild life, especially birds.

I had just started a P-03 with Benoit Paysant-Le Roux coaching me, a real treat for me. I flew my down-wind leg and pulled into the 45 vertical to enter the first maneuver when I smacked right into a large crow. At Benoit's request I landed to inspect. The crow had taken out a large portion of my right wing and splattered the airplane with gross amounts of blood and feathers. The repair went well and was almost unoticable and the event was quite unavoidable, but my peripheral vision now scans for birds in the path of the airplane.

In regards to spontaneity, I was approached to relight a refinery flare.
It was an emergency. One of the refinery personel sacrificed his trainer to be rigged with a flare and I would fly over the stack to reignite the vapors.
Sadly the idea was scrapped do to the reignition by conventional means before we arrived.

lmao, that would be funny as hell!! the light off, would probably melt the covering, and blow you out of the sky, but nonetheless, would be a GREAT video.

GraupnerFan,
Your right! The reignition would have blown the trainer to itty bitty pieces. That was the part I looked forward to.

BasinBum,
I believe Ohio had a viable economy when you were here.
Since then it has gone to the dogs and the rodents.

Several years ago, I witnessed a "Darwin Event"....

A club member had a nice Sig Fazer. The owner was a decent pilot, and had a lot of fun with it... Well, one day some suggested a smoke system for the Fazer, and owner decided to do it...

He purchased four "smoke bombs"... the little round ones that you ignite with a lighter, they spark, and begin to smoke..... He glued four film containers to a velcro strape.... glued a Smoke bomb into each container... His comment "Man, a perfect fit!"..... LOL! He straped the bombs onto the Fazer.. the location was just behind the wing.... He flipped the prop, and adjusted his engine for the last time.... His partner leaned forward and ignited the bombs, he taxied out, and the smoke started to get heavy... he took off, made three of the prettiest rolling passes one could ever imagine..... Well.... some of us noticed the covering burning, but the pilot was having to much fun...."I've got it, It will be ok!" finally, he lost elevator control..... and the Fazer plunged into the lake, and I guess that's were it is today..... The owner couldn't understand what happened... I'm guessing the covering and possible the wood was destoryed on the elevator.... but who knows.

Well on the subject of close animal encounters, I landed with bird crap literally on the windshield of my Midstar 40.

Just thought all the PETA members would love that hehe..... Didn't hurt the bird any of course. In fact the bird (some blackbird I think, not very big at all) just kept flying around like nothing happened anyways, despite my repeated buzzes..

There is a good chance Pat's trainer would have ignited (ala the smoke bomb plane) before reaching the gas plume it was intended for. Things like flying a plane to an exact spot, flying with ignited flares, flying in a confined area, are all well and good in theory but quite a bit differant in the real world. I have a lot of experiance in lighting things on fire and what seems like a good idea initially can really go bad in a hurry.

On the wildlife side...I witnessed a Nelson powered Quicky 500 midair with a Redtail hawk. The hawk was stunned for a couple of seconds recovered and flew away. The plane on the other hand broke into pieces and was a total.

I'm just guessing that the rules of the witness protection program won't let our good friend BasinBum answer that question!

I do special effects in the movie industry. I have lit more stuff on fire than I can remember. Who knew that building Guillows models and squirting them with lighter fluid could lead to an honest career.
