Man did I ever learn alot last night about these Heli's. I went over to Rick's(local heli expert A.K.A RCU "Rcdalcanto" house last night, and he setup my normal pitch curve, idle up 1,2, and throttle hold. Also my throttle curves are all set for each. Now we're going to meet at the field and fine tune the settings, and set my blades tracking. We even setup the trainer cord so that all we have to do is hook up the 2 Tx's and go. Rick is good, and did all this probably in about an hour, He saved the rest of you guys alot of questions I would have had setting up my different idle ups, and getting this ship fine tuned, but I'm sure you guys would have been there for me . I can tell as with planes, people are very helpful in this hobby, and it makes it more enjoyable.

So Thanks again Rick, UR DA MAN !!!!! Daz...

BTW, he's a great family man too, we need more people like this in the world.

It was my pleasure Daz. I love seeing your enthusiasm, it helps keep my love for the hobby strong too. Without sharing the joy, it gets old and boring fast. Keep up the good work.

Well today was a very progressive day for me, before today all I did was hover about 4 ft off the ground at most. Well today me and Rick went out to the field and 1st he set my blades tracking, took oh about 2-3 minutes, amazing. Then he flew it around and made sure all his settings were correct, and he again fine tuned the curves. After that he hooked up the trainer cord, and he took off and let me hover quite high, a good 15-20 ft, then he took it back, and put it into forward flight and gave the heli to me via the cord. I managed to fly around a bit before taking it back to keep me out of trouble.
After that he had me take off and do some patterns he thought would help me, which they did, after about 3 tanks he let me take off fly around and land, did it all myself without him having to save it. It does help to know he is there on the cord, even though I took off and flew and landed myself, it will be different with him not connected.
The only problem I'm having is backing this ship up, but Rick has targeted this weakness of mine, and talks me up for it, and I did alot better backing up by the end of 3rd tank, its still going to take a little work. I think the problem is that I am use to airplanes, and most airplanes dont backup, but its coming.
Another point that has helped is the fact between flights on mine Rick flies his Xcell Fury, and while he is doing loops, rolls, inverted flight and inverted turns, auto's, and things I dont even know the name of, I'm watching and I learn alot from watching what he does.
I would highly recommend to anyone if you have a heli expert around dont be too proud to hook up on a buddy cord and learn this Heli flying. I could only imagine how long it would have taken for me to get to this point by myself. Thanks again Rick, and EEEvvverryone, I love this hobby, and my Venture. Daz...

You guys should have seen Daz today! He went from barely being able to hover his Venture (he can do it great on G2), to soloing in 4-5 tanks of gas - all thanks to the trainer cord! He just time warped through months of practice and crashes in a couple of hours. He was able to push himself, get past the nerves, make a few mistakes close to the ground, all with zero consequences. We worked on hovering, take off and landing, fast forward flight, approaches, and the all important - slow figure of eight circuits 10-15 feet off the ground. To my amazement, he never lost it on the slow circuits, even though the heli is constantly showing you a different side, and you have to always fly the collective, cyclic, and tail. Tomorrow, we will work on those tasks again, and then play with loops and rolls at the end. By the end of June, I will probably let him fly without the cord, and we'll have another 3D pilot in our midst....

Rick

P.S. - I've said it once, and I'll say it again - Give me an airplane pilot that can hover on G2 and a trainer cord, and I'll teach him to fly a heli in less than a gallon of gas! (Of course, it does help when they are as talented as Daz....)

Rick,

In addition to being skillful on the sticks, I'll bet he listens to what you say, doesn't second-guess your instructions, and doesn't try to "improve" your set-up when he gets home...

Good job, Daz.

Yes, that is something Daz does very well. I will tell him "give a little right rudder" or "more up, more up" - and he does it with little delay and without error. IMHO, that comes from being a seasoned airplane pilot first. The same would not work with someone new to helis and new to RC.

Or an experienced planker who is also an engineer of soome persuasion, and, having read all the books, thinks he knows what he is doing...

Students like Daz make all the effort worthwhile. I just wish there were more like him.

Thanks Rick, and Steve you guys are making me blush. Me and Rick had a great day at the field today flying the Heli's, while dodging sprinkles of rain.

Steve did you go post your recomendations on my next Heli. I would really like your input!! Daz...

Great news there Daz and gang. I was never afforded the luxury of a buddy box training depite flying with 15-20 heli only pilots here in Houston. But, I spent the time and burned the fuel. That is great!

As far as the "next" heli I would like to share my recent experience with you Daz.

I have had some pretty nice ships this year. I started with a R30 but was finding that it was to limiting. I wanted a 60 because I was suffering from some visual problems. Plus the awesome size and effect that 680+ mm blades have on heli flight. So I scoured the web and ended up getting a VIGOR CS in the deal of a century for $650 NIB!! WOW, man I was stoked. But after building it I realized it was TOOOOOOOOOOOOOO much machine for me. Not to mention the price tag. I was to scared to put it up in the air for fear of explaining crash $ to the wife. So, sold it.

Got a Fury 60 Expert. OH, man is this one nice heli. Not as expensive, flies great and looks kewl!! But, after a little time on it just didn't fit me well. So I traded it for the R60 that I have now. You have seen the pics posted here. That is the best flying heli I have owned. But, only because it came with $600 worth of upgraded parts. Darn sure better fly awesome with that kind of $ in upgrades!! The 3D guys at the field are always asking to fly it. And we have Robbes, MA, Hirobo Eagles, ects...

The moral of the story is don't buy a new heli until you have exausted the one you have or you are impaired with it in some way. I really should have stayed with the R30 a little longer before jumping into 60s. I could have developed my skills more and would have known better what I really needed. That is something NOBODY can give you or advise you on. Experience will dictate what you will buy and like the most.

As you know I sold my Venture last month. I really like that heli. It is smooth and stable and builds confidence. The only knock I had on it was the power to weight. I was prepared to upgrade it to a 50 but bailed out for a few reasons. Most of which will be solved in time when the Venture line is fully implemented here in the US.

But, I have decided to go with a 50 to complement my 60. I looked LONG and HARD at all the 50 out from Kalt to Robbe and placed an order last Thurs with Century on the Falcon SE V2. I have been reluctant to get a Century heli but this one looks very nice. I like it over the Raptor and Sceadu. There are a TON of features and values but the biggest is the low weight! It weighs less than a Raptor! And when you are swinging 600mm blades with that king of weight it will auto like a 60 and fly like a raped ape. Check it out.

Anyhow, kudos on the progress and keep it up! Just be careful! Those planes might get dusty!

Lift, Thanks. I had noticed from one of your other post that you were going to order the Century Heli, it had me confused because you had mentioned you were selling the Venture to stick with youe 60 size, I know this hobby just makes us always want more, we just cant get enough. I'm going to fly this Venture until I'm very comfortable with it before moving on, but I would like to get it now because I have the "moolah".

Thats interesting from your post it sounds like you like the Raptor 60 the best of them all, I had counted that one out, maybe I need to rethink the Raptor, I didnt see any of your R60 pics on the site, can you post it here, or link me to the post. Do all the R60's come with $300 worth of upgrades or did you just catch that deal.

Have you seen the Hirobo Freya, I see a pretty good deal at one site for $499.00, Daz...

Daz,
You can click on the link below this post that says "gallery". You can see all my various helis that I have had recently. I have floated around tooo much. As I mentioned, the more stick time I have gotten the more educated I have become on what I truly wanted.

My Raptor has $600 worth of upgrades:
CF boom
CF torque tube
CF Fins
CF boom Supports
CF Frames
TT Metal Swashplate
TT Metal Mixing Base
TT Metal Mixing Arms
TT Upper & Lower Alum Bearing Blocks
TT Metal Fan for YS
........ and then some
It weighs 10.0 bls dry and ready. No, they don't come like that. The stock Raptor 60 comes with alum frames, wood, blades, and NO carbon anywhere. They are great fliers for the $. There are alot better fliers around for not much more $. The Freya is one of them. Although, they are a tad heavy and you might opt for the YS .80 if you go that route.

I think that the Fury is tuff to beat for the $. But, they tend to suffer pretty severe damage when crashed and the parts are not the cheapest. But, because of their light weight they are a very agile machine.

While you are looking at the higher end birds you might as well look at Robbe. The Futura SE is selling for $650 bucks currently. They just recently lowered the prices. I think that you are getting a KILLER deal on that one.

If I had my choice again though I wish I had kept that Vigor CS. Man what a beautiful bird!! The parts and quality are second to none. Not all of JR's line is like that. It truly is a fine ship. If you can wait awhile I think by the end of the year we will see the Venture 50,60 and yes 90!! They are out overseas. Also they are coming out with the "Sylphide".

Anyhow, all this is neat and cool and all but any heli will do it all in the hands of a skilled pilot. Get what you like and fly it silly! Something I should have learned long ago.

hey Daz, Rick...... just read the post above and thought I would through my .02 worth in.
Daz....... you were ouwsome out here sunday. kudos to you my man. and rick... what a guy...... my new to me heli is in ricks hanger........ geting a new engine installed....... but in the mean time rick has let me buddy box with his fury......I must say it was a bit of a thrill but a little nerve wracking to be flying someone elses high $ machine......... but rick does a great job teaching and lets you get a way with a few mistaches......(before taking over and saving his bird)......... I really appreciate the help and the willingness of everyone especially rick and his willingness to help even when my bird is grounded!
I do want to say that G2 has been the best training aid though..... the first time out with ricks heli, I was able to hover fairly well and I was happy........ guess rick was too cause he then said hey lets try forward flight...... I figured I would be hovering and such for a while before doing anything else...... last time out I was able to bring the heli back to a hover from forward flight....... what a thrill........ looking forward to getting my heli engine installed and flying it so I don't endanger ricks anymore.......... Rick thanks again man........ and daz....... I'll be nippin at your heals........ look out behind you.......
Joe
