I think the one hanging by the gear is a friends instructor. He did that quite some time ago. I have seen it 3 times in my career so far by instructors and students.

Funny pics. But the one about the cockpit makes me wonder - why is it called the cockpit? Does it have anything to do with the small ring used for cock fights? Or is it a borrowed naval term, such as pilot? Anyone know?

In case anyone is interested, I found this at www.wordorigins.org

Cockpit

The original sense of this term was a pit for fighting cocks. This sense appears around 1587. In 1599, Shakespeare used the term in Henry V to refer to the theater and specifically the area around the stage. The theatrical reference was his invention, obviously playing on the ideal of a cockfight being a performance.

The nautical sense arose about 1700. It was not an open area, but rather a compartment below decks. Normally, it would be the sleeping quarters for junior officers, but in battle would be the hospital. This sense appears unrelated to the theatrical sense, and may have been chosen beacuse junior officers lorded over the sailors like roosters or because of a physical resemblance to the space where chickens were kept. The nautical sense transferred to airplanes around 1914 and to cars in the mid-1930s.

hmmmm. i dunno about that one Bruno. The cockpit is called that because back in the day, hand controlled valves, called "petcocks" were used to control all the various functions and stuff in an aircraft. All these "petcocks" were put into one location, known as the cockpit. Atleast this is what i was taught in A&P school, i could be wrong.
