Okay guys, I am building a new warbird and need to find the perfect engine. My choice is between these two engines and I just want to hear what you think. Any help here would be greatly appreciated - thanks.

I don't think you can go wrong either way. Both have rear induction, smooth and reliable.

The question could also be

What do you prefer; Mercedes or Kia?

I too am considering the 3W & ZDZ for my Ziroli P-40. I want rear induction.
I was also looking at the RCS 75, any thoughts?

Texan,

I am looking for a motor for my PCM Model 109, it is a quarter scale sized model and should come in at about 40 pounds finished.

Turbinator,

Dude, - I drive a Kia, (I mean. . . I know it ain't the greatest) but in fact it looks alittle like a NEON.> Whoo Hooo!!!

Seriously, I just want the best engine for the "Job" (see below)

JOB DESCRIPTION:

Applicant must have a strong will to succede (especially in my model). . .applicant should be able to produce maximum horsepower at all times regardless of installation. Applicant will promise to never quit - AT ANY TIME - under penalty of repatronization with the earth's natural "crust" at high speeds.
And finally. . .the winning aplicant will begin work (start) with glee and cheer whenever said (boss) thats me. . . flips the prop over.

If you (3W 75 or ZDZ 80) have what it takes, and the above applies to you, then this amy be the job for you.

OK My 2 cents.
Save the money and go with the ZDZ it is just as good of an engine as the 3W dont let the suppliers take your money with something that is as good as the other but just looks "prettier" Also the ZDZ I believe is heavier and if you are building a warbird you WANT all the weight up front you can get to offset the fact that ALL warbirds come in tail heavy and so I suggest going with the heavier and less expensive engine. A lot of 3D flyers will tell ya all the fancy expensive engines to use but they all cost more and are mainly made for the lighter aerobatic aircraft and so are lighter engines themselves and you would have to add more weight upfront and the engines themselves dont seem to work as well in heavy warbirds as they do in aerobatic planes. My opinion is stick with ZDZ or Zenoah for a warbird as they seem to be made for them why do you think most of the premier designers of warbirds use them and list them on their plans there is a reason for it. So go less expensive and save the extra money for your scale items wanted for your plane

I have to agree here. I was really torn between the ZDZ 80 and 3W 100 twin for my 33% Extra. I went with the 100, because I got a great deal on it (Thanks, Bill!!), but after seeing both and hearing both, if I hadn't gotten the deal, I would have gone with the ZDZ. Very powerful, easy-running engine. As far as "good" as the 3W, I'm not sure, as long as longevity, etc, come into play, but ANY good gas engine will only last as long as it's maintenance allows...a well maintained gas engine practically lasts forever. I have seen well-maintained G-62's with hundreds and hundreds of gallons through them....

I think a better comparison would be Cadillac, and Lincoln...depends on your funds, and preference....

interesting.....!!
I know a few 3d flyers that only fly ZDZ over the more expensive Da's........What I've seen from ZDZ is reliable starting an perfomance........not to mention an after sales service when an if you need it......ZDZ would be my choice.......!!

ZDZ all the way. TURBINATOR's ill conceived notion of comparison is snobby and typical of label flashing, name-dropping, better than the jones's logic that has a click of modelers convinced that the more it cost, the better it must be. Spend away! The ZDZ is a powerhouse!

I'M NOT FAMILIAR WITH THE NEW PCM ME-109, BUT I KNOW THAT ALL ZIROLI SINGLE ENGINE WARBIRDS WERE DESIGNED AROUND THE ZENOAH G-62. 3W AND DA WERE'NT EVEN ARUND WHEN NICK WAS DESIGNING AND TESTING HIS BIRDS. YOU MIGHT WANT TO TAKE A LOOK AT THE FOX 5.8 ACTUALLY THE FOX 4.2 WILL FLY ANY OF NICK'S DESIGNS WITH AUTHORITY. THE COWL ON THE P-40 IS LARGE ENOUGH THAT THE ENGINE WILL BE COMPLETELY ENCLOSED. JUST A MONEY SAVING THOUGHT.
