I was looking to buy the Hornet II and stumbled across the Zoom 400 ( known as the dolphin 400 in tiawan). I know that it is supposed to be out in the next few weeks. I was curious if anyone has done any research on this Heli? I'm also trying to figure out which one would be better to buy. It sounds like the zoom is going to be cheaper than the hornet II but getting parts are going to be a problem for a while ( which I need as much as I crash my existing helis). Anybody know which one is the best deal? Thanks.

I think there are some problems with the tail gear or something.... it's got something to do with gears being worn out too soon.... but it's a very small problem because manufacturers will fix it soon.... I've seen the videos and all..... but never in person I just hate it...! Not because it's defected or anything.... it's actually very good i think..... It's just that i can't buy one soon! [:(]

they have some information at www.dreamhobbies.com they are selling it with motor and no other electronics for $249.95. Also graupner will be selling it in April as the Micro-Star 400, no price Here is a short video of the heli. I am thinking of buying to zoom400 from the guy in hong kong. He seems to be very quick with his email which gives me some confidence. I am waiting for some 1800mah 3cell Lipos to go with it so hopefully he will get these in stock in the next couple of days.

My Zoom arrived yesterday from Taiwan. I paid US$265 including 7 day shipping, spare blades and TR gearset. Looks to be a quality machine. The head is awesome, more like a scaled down version of my Nexus head than any of my other micros. The servos are all connected via pushrods and bellcranks which is cool, however I struggled to find servos to fit the precut servo bays to start with, but finally discovered the GWS naro BB's fit perfect. These guys get screwed in instead of glued or DS taped. I'll be sticking a GY240 in along with a brushed speed controller for the stock motor. I have a mega 16/15/5 on standby but I'm keen to see what the stocker can do. At this stage I only have Etec1200s handy so I may try a 3s2p pack and see if they can handle it.

Hey Mossie... what so there is a total of 4 servo right? But how many channel do you actually need for this? 6 channel? with what kind of mixing is need? I was going to get one to, but my damn radio only have 5 channel... and airplane mix but not heli....

You need 5-6 channels depending on your gyro model for this heli as it has collective pitch. You also need a heli mix programmable radio to setup pitch and throttle curves :)

Is the pg03 gyro ok for this ? I have a good Heli radio and a few HS50 and HS55 hitech servos

Well I received my Zoom and now have it assembled. Couple of issues during the pushrod to servo install. First up the pushrod dont fit the way they are shown in the manual very well. I ended up stripping the crutch down and reinstalling new ones, in particular the forward/aft cyclic was a royal pain to get sweet. My first few test hovers reveal a major problem with the tail hunting. The gyro was dialed back to 50% with the hunt still bad so its a mechanical issue I think. This is the first time my GY240 was ever complained about the airframe its in, and its been around :-). I think the standard servo/pushrod system introduces slop to the system so I'm going to rig a boom mount system and see if that helps. Strangely my friends Zoom is doing the same thing and he already has a carbon pushrod (the hunt is not as bad). Other than that it seems all good.

Have you crash yet??? sorry to ask this... but I just want to know how durable is this thing :)... Looking forward for this in a few month... I didn't want to buy it in the first place.. waiting for other to make mistake first, since I can't afford another mistake on buying the wrong heli ... :).... 249 for the basic kit someone said???

No I have not crashed it yet and I'm not likely too for the next week anyhow as all I am doing is hovering to trim and sort out the tail. I expect when I do put it in later on it'll be a good one :) I'll post here with the carnage when it happens.

Try unplugging your gyro and set up you controller mixing (ie. pitch to tail) as best you can. If it set up right you should be able to do basic manouevers without gyro. Then plug the gyro in and set up the gain... Gyro should be firmly mounted near the centre of rotation ensuring that its orientation is correct.

I saw two flying at our club meet the other night. They seem to fly very well but both crashed with one braking both blades and bending the tail boom. The other hit a wall and broke both blades. The blades are made of plastic with a foam core and do not take much to smash. From what the guys were saying the blades were cheap enough to replace.
