Has anyone done anything for a hopper or spray system on the new Hanger 9 Pawnee 80"? I just got one and was thinking of putting a retract tank inside and make it work with a tank of water. Any ideas or examples would be greatly appreciated.

Talc powder would probably be better to use as on David Hayes' Thrush. Water will be nearly invisible as others on this thread have found out. Somewhere in this thread is David's setup that uses retract air tanks and talc powder. David also won Top Gun this year with this setup, but the tanks where upgraded to Co2 tanks instead of the original retracts air tanks.

Red is correct! Although I usually use the "pure cornstarch" version of baby powder rather than talcum.
There are a bunch excellent photos by Palmer Johnson of my Thrush's system in use during Saturday and Sunday in the TG'08 photos at www.franktiano.com

Thank you for the reply. Do you have a diagram or drawing of how you made your spray system? If I am reading this correctly you used CO2 instead of retract tanks, what kind of CO2 tanks did you use? Thanks in advance for your help.

I'm using a modified Kobalt portable CO2 regulating system for pneumatic tools from Lowe's item # 166441 http://www.lowes.com/lowes/lkn?action=productList&N=0&Ntk=i_products&Ntt=CO2 with their 9 oz (net weight-17oz gross) tanks #184295 in combination with 4 "medium" Robart air tanks in my current set-up. I removed two "large" Robart tanks from the old system that had a total of 6 but still had a net gain of over a pound when "loaded". I do have more air than dust capacity now and I also have a more consistent rate than before rather than a big burst on the first pass and lighter trails on the second pass.
WLJ and I are planning to do a build thread for an RC Guys Agwagon when his arrives in which I'll include some new shots of my setup shown several times earlier in this thread. I haven't seen the smaller H9 Pawnee in person yet but I had a working system in a much smaller version of my Thrush ~10 years ago, maybe we can work something out.

David,
Thank you for the information. You are using both air and CO2, was there not enough pressure with just air? I bet you have hours of trial and error in this setup. Sounds really cool, I cannot wait to try some crop dusting........

Not exactly, I'm only using CO2 for propellant, it is contained in the Robart tanks at ~90PSI and they are "refilled" from the regulated high pressure CO2 source. The Robart tanks are plumbed in between the regulator and the air control valve. The regulator cannot "flow" enough volume for 100" + of spray swath by itself so the air tanks act as a plenum chamber and recharge in turnarounds as the "system" gets ready for the next pass.

Ok I think I am getting the picture, do you think something that complicated would be needed on something smaller? How in the world did you figure all of that out? I had a rough idea on how I was going to do it but nothing that elaborate.

I've been working on the "system" for more than 10 yrs to get the proper effect! Yes there have been simpler and lighter versions that fit in smaller planes, but I'm always searching for the more realistic and longer lasting results even if the current 28lbs is about the limit I can haul around with my Saito 1.80. I worked on full-scale dusters for more than 12yrs and know the effect that I want to achieve to suit myself. But then again I'm also doing it for additional realism points in competition not just "wow factor" at the local field. There are 44 individually hand molded, trimmed, painted and weathered scale nozzles on my scale booms too that aren't necessary for your average ARF, but the static judges at Top Gun and Scalemasters tend to appreciate them so they're there.
We'll be working an a "simpler" version for the RC Guys AgWagon, although that is quite a bit larger than your H9 Pawnee too.

The Pawnee will be a challenge, the fuse is larger than I thought it would be. I think I might be able to put two Robart medium tanks inside on the bottom. As you said I am looking for function and the WOW effect at local events/field.I still have to figure out how to make the booms.
I have been flying full scale for a few years now and my instructor does crop dusting for his main profession. That has grown my interest in crop dusting for a model aircraft. It is something you don't always see. I have been flying r/c's for 24 years and I like things that are different. I think this will make for a cool project.

Dave,
Do you have a drawing, sketch or pictures of your system that you could share with us.
Thank you.

OSG,
My camera and my computer refuse to communicate with each other right now but there are already photos and descriptions a couple of years back in this thread of my earlier versions.

Thrushdust, if you don't mind, how did you make the spray nozzles? My spray bars are for looks right now, but i would like to make them a little more scale. I've seen alot of pictures of your thrush in MA, but never the spray tips up close. Thanks a bunch . Noodle

Noodle, I mold each of my current scale (3/16 scale) nozzles from "Bondo" in a rubber mold formed on a master that I soldered up from K+S brass stock, washers, a .080 bolt head and Dubro swivel link spacer parts. After the Bondo sets, I trim off the excess flashing and sand or file to final shape for a base coat of metallic aged brass paint followed by some additional "weathering and corrosion". The "pink" mold was made from a 2 part rubber compound that dentists use to make molds for casting crown impressions. For my earlier and smaller (1 3/4" per ft) model the mold was made from silicone rubber caulking. There are a total of 44 nozzles on my Thrush for static judging but I usually lose several during a competition or travel to or from so I have to replace a few regularly. The booms are made from K+S streamline aluminum tubing replicating the streamline stainless steel booms that were on the full-scale at the time of documentation. I'll try to attach a couple of photos I took with my cell phone since my camera and computer still refuse to cooperate.

OSG, If these work I'll try to get a picture and a description of my spray setup for you.
