Very interesting Dave. You have obviously done a lot of development work to come up with a system that works well. Thank you for sharing all of this information.

ORIGINAL: Thrushdust

I'm using a modified Kobalt portable CO2 regulating system for pneumatic tools from Lowe's item # 166441 http://www.lowes.com/lowes/lkn?action=productList&N=0&Ntk=i_products&Ntt=CO2 with their 9 oz (net weight-17oz gross) tanks #184295 in combination with 4 "medium" Robart air tanks in my current set-up. I removed two "large" Robart tanks from the old system that had a total of 6 but still had a net gain of over a pound when "loaded". I do have more air than dust capacity now and I also have a more consistent rate than before rather than a big burst on the first pass and lighter trails on the second pass.
WLJ and I are planning to do a build thread for an RC Guys Agwagon when his arrives in which I'll include some new shots of my setup shown several times earlier in this thread. I haven't seen the smaller H9 Pawnee in person yet but I had a working system in a much smaller version of my Thrush ~10 years ago, maybe we can work something out.

David

I've got it, just don't have time to work on it right now. Billy J. (WLJ)

In response to some of the PM questions I have received:

The dust reservoir has to be strong enough to withstand the full pressure in the event that either the dust valve doesn't open for some reason or the booms become clogged when the air valve is turned on. I actually tested mine outside the airplane (and the workshop) to make sure it would withstand the pressure with the dust valve in the off position.

A 20oz or similar soda bottle could work for both the air (2+) and the dust but the "filler" cap is pretty small for the dust and I have felt them EXPLODE and seen an AT-6 literately blown apart at Top Gun when a compressor was left unattended, estimated pressure 200+ PSI at the time of fracture!

The holes in the bottom of the boom, where my "spray" actually comes out, get progressively larger towards the tip as do the orifices on the full scale to create a more even pattern as the pressure decreases as the spray medium travels out the booms. I'll check and see what I'm using at each end but it will depend on your system's flow capability and swath for what you will need.

Yes, those spray holes are on the wrong end of the scale nozzles, you need to make a left and right not just keep drilling holes to do it right, but you can't see that when its flying by down the runway, and my "newer" ones are correct.
I drill holes for each of the molded nozzles to be ZAPped into also, they are screwed on to threaded nipples on the full scale subject.

The Rockwell Thrush S2R-600 at Top Gun '08 in Masters class was mine, 108" ws and 28lbs, but it only has a Saito 1.80 on it, not a high powered radial. The other eight cylinders are molded plastic and filled with lead for balancing. Sorry plans nor kits are available for this one.

There was a smaller Air Tractor flying in the Pro-AM class (doing aerobatics for some reason - rolls and loops???) that may have been one of Duane Habet's kits

There is a large 501 Air Tractor kit build over in the Giant Scale section,
http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/m_6605661/anchors_6605661/mpage_1/key_Air%252Ctractor/anchor/tm.htm#660566
but that's a turbine powered airframe. There are several other radial engine versions of the full scale Air Tractors, maybe you could convert that kit or the kit provider may have a radial version to offer too.

Dave,
Not to get off of the current subject, but are you anywhere close to the beach fire? I hope not. And we hope to see you in Goldsboro on July 19 if you are off.
Thanks Alan

Yep, built it myself, don't need no stinking drawings for that! ;-) Not ones that anybody else can understand anyway, just a few sketches, the T.L.A.R. and the K.I.S.S. principles and about 12 weeks working 60-80 hrs a week in two 6 week periods. Then a couple of weeks of "clean-up" before each major competition. I did have about 25 years of model building and 12 yrs of experience working on the full scale and knew what it needed to look like. Also, I didn't have the spray system working the first year at Top Gun '03.
It is my own design and there is no way I'd have the time or the desire to spend the time it would take to produce sale able drawings. I tried to get some done of my smaller version (82" ws) 10+ yrs ago and could never work out all the bugs. Of the 5 prototypes that other folks were building to test the plans, none were ever completed and flown for various reasons. I fly it in Masters and Designer classes so it must be designed and built by me. It's not for sale. Although, I guess there's a price for just about anything so you can PM an offer, but consider its history because I do! As mentioned earlier on this thread and others, RC Guys from Canada and Austars are both working on ARF Cessna spray planes about the same size.

bgfireman, No, thank goodness, we get some smoke once in a while but we're @ I-95, 9 miles south of VA border. Not looking good for the your fly-in, wrong weekend I think, sorry!
