Hi Folks, My CallAir project started with a search for a plan or at least a 3 view. My search took me to the Afton WY Municipal Airport, where Boyd Eddins got me in contact with Herb Andersen. Herb dessigned the A9 based on the "A" cabin models created by Reuell Call in 1940. The factory complex now produces the Aviat Huskey, Pitts, and others. I was fortunate to find that Herb is an old friend of Tom Rathbone who's website is www.classicairplanemodels.com The A9 is not on the menu, as he drew it up for me, but if you want it, contact him. The plan is for a 1/5 scale with a 90" span. I reduced it to 78%. Mine is a prototype. Tom's plan is a suggested method of building, but he told me to use my own construction method if I wished. I used the wing construction and rib template from the Sterling FS-1 Tri Pacer, and made the wing and center section as one piece. I also used sheeted former and stringer construction where hollowed balsa block was indicated on the fuselage drawing. The landing gear is fashioned from arrow shaft tubing of two different sizes. There are "monster truck" 6" shock absorbers. I put a piece of rubber tubing inside each one to adjust the maximum travel to 5 1/2'' They anchor up in the wing to maximize travel and to clean up the looks. The attachments are fashioned out of various pieces of aluminum stock. I deviated on the wing incidence on the plan. Measured against the upper deck inside the cockpit (set level) the wing is + 3 degrees, and the horiz. stab is +2 1/2 degrees. It will fly with a slightly tail high attitude. (I HOPE!!) Airfoil is Clark "Y", engine mount is a standard long fiberglass. This project has been the biggest challenge of my modeling career. I have cut every piece from sticks, sheets, blocks, and stock. As this model is not a proven thing, I would suggest that only the experienced or adventurous try this. The important thing is that Tom's plan gives you the correct shapes. The model plan for this airplane did not exist until he drew it. I may die if the finished product doesn't fly. I have no reason to think it won't. More later. -- TWANGER
