Hello All,

This forum just won't die thanks to guys like us! I finally finished the Ag-Cat. It was a bit of a job but a labor of love. And it means there will be another ag plane in the air this summer. Now if only my Pawnee would get here. I want to work on something of my own.

As far as the spray system goes. I think that is top secret stuff. The guy with the Thrush that has perfected it does seem to want to share the system with us. Maybe it's over our heads anyway. And besides I think it is more fun having a hopper full of candy for the kids. Plus having a big hopper full of candy will often get a solo flight at a fly-in. The last 3 giant scale events I attended proved that.

Here are a few pictures of the Ag-Cat.

The guy with a spray system, David Hayes (I think?) has a oil/smoke system in his Thrush. I had a peek inside his fuselage in a photo of one of my rc magazines. If you want, I can hunt it down and post it. It looked pretty complicated and I think I saw two oil tanks in there. Nobody wants to share their secrets especially when they have an award winning airplane. I figure smoke is easier to spray than liquid unless you devise a way to put liquid under high pressure and use nozzles. Now that sounds complicated if not impossible. I mean the idea sounds simple but the not the method.

Hey tango do you have any pictures of your airtractor? I bought the plans of the airtractor from duane habets with intentions to build it with some type spray bar system. I had put the project off because of hurricane Ivan and know that I am ready to build it I have to deploy to Kuwait for a year. I ended up giving my agwagon to my father. The duster hopper worked great for me but you must make sure the interior has no leaks or you will get powder all over the interior of the aircraft. I can't wait to some day build and fly the airtactor.

outacontrol41,

It is not Smoke system. The tanks are actually Robart air tanks. David emailed me a while back on how the system works and attached a detailed photo of it. WLJ (screen name) who has posted in this thread is a friend of Davids. I'll let either him or Dave post more info about. I know they both follow this thread so maybe they will let the rest of you know in more detail. Sorry for the tease, but I do not want to make him mad, as he was nice enough to share it with me, when I contacted him about it.

outacontrol41,

I kinda let the cat out of the bag. I hope no one gets mad. The system uses air pressure to force a substance out of the spray bars. That's all I going to say.

Okay guys,

Here's the facts-

Omaha_RC_ Flyer is correct, I do use compressed air and "dust" in my spray systems, not smoke or liquids.

I have been using this type system, after much trial and error, since TOP GUN '95 and stopped posting details of it on the Internet (as asked) after the 9-11 attacks and the Anthrax scare because of Homeland Security concerns. I did not even use it in competition again until TOP GUN '04. I have however replied to 30+ PM's and e-mail inquiries over the last few years and believe I assisted all whom personally asked for the details, rather than assume and post I would not share them. Details and photos have also appeared in print in several magazines, more than once in each MODEL AVIATION and R/C REPORT that I am aware of.

I will attempt to attach a detailed and labeled photo of the system that I am currently using in my 108" Thrush that deploys the "spray" out through the scale booms, with 44 individual scale nozzles (not pictured) below and behind the wing panels in the proper scale manner. It can be seen in operation on page 2 (?) of this forum.

Good luck with your projects, fly 'em low and slow! If you have to look up to see your model you're flying to high, I spent 12 years watching the full-scale aircraft I maintained working, I didn't have to look up much then either.

'Nuff said---

Brazilian Crop-Duster R/C Plane

Brazilian aircraft maker Embraer makes the EMB-201 Ipanema, the most used crop-duster plane in Brazil.

The Brazilian modeler maker Tasmod, makes a good R/C .40 engine scale plane of the Ipanema crop-duster plane: http://www.interclubnet.com.br/tasmod/ipanema40.htm

BigStew60,

I am sorry, but I don't have any photos of my Air Tractor yet. I want to wait until I have the motor and prop mounted before I take photos. If you have seen Duane Habets' Air Tractor, you have seen mine. The only difference is mine has no numbers or letters on it and I don't have a cockpit yet.

I think I speak for everyone when I say MANY THANKS to David Hayes for being kind enough to show us and tell us about his spray system. I think that is some awesome, intricate detail modeling!!! However, it is light years ahead of my skill level. I guess I will wait until Spring and when the real Air Tractors start flying around Southeastern Idaho, I will just take out my radio and act like I am controlling the real plane while it is spraying the crops. Then, I will go fly my Air Tractor and act like I just got done spraying.

Keep your wings level and let's have fun out there!

Tango

Howdy Folks!

I recently weighed my Duane Habets Air Tractor at a Parcel Express store. I was expecting it to weigh around 13 to 13.5 lbs. However, with my 9800 mah Li/Po battery pack and the AXi 4130/16 motor with a Jeti 77 Opto ESC, my plane weighed in at 15 lbs., 8 oz. I figure by the time I put a cockpit and battery mount in it, my Air Tractor will weigh at least 16 lbs.

Does anyone have any experience flying a 16 lbs. airplane with the AXi 4130/16 motor? My Air Tractor Wingspan is 92 inches. Wing width is 11 inches throughout the entire wingspan. Wing Area is 1012 square inches. At 16 lbs., the Wing Loading is 36.5 oz. per square foot. I was told 30 ounces per square foot or below is where you want your Wing Loading. I would like to stay with the AXi 4130/16 motor or maybe the Actro 32-5, so I can use my same 9800 mah battery pack, which I will use in my Hangar 9 Corsair. Does anyone have any comments they could share with me regarding this project?

I am a 100% Disabled Veteran and I don't have a lot of money to buy everything I should. I am just trying to get by, using the same $700.00 batteries to fly two airplanes. However, that seems to limit me to certain motors and I definitely want to stay with the electrics on my Air Tractor. If anyone knows of an electric motor that will run well with 9800 mah, 22.2 volt, 6s4p batteries and will fly a 16 lbs. airplane with authority, I would appreciate all the help I can get, even if it is just a pointer to get me in the right direction.

Does anyone know how much a Saito 1.50 with an average sized fuel tank full of fuel would weigh? I am just curious to know if my batteries and electric components are making it much heavier than the glow version. All responses are appreciated!!

I would like to know my Air Tractor had enough power to do scale flying, with maybe a loop here or a roll there, but it must at least be able to climb out nicely after a simulated spraying run.

Penny for your thoughts anyone?

Tango

Thanks for the advice Omaha. I suppose I should have thought about that before I wrote it. Sorry to take up so much space on this thread guys.

Keep the heavy air underneath your wings and the light air on top.
