OK crop duster fans heres an update on my airtruck.

Just had five weeks away from the shed due to training etc so back into it.
Daughter provided for scale, she's 3 next month.
Some weightss:
Wing panels with servos less glass and resin-3lb 8oz each
fus (pod) less engine, prop, detail- 5lbs
tail and booms with servos- 1lb 8oz each
stub wing with under carriage, hopper servo-3lbs
engine, prop, exhaust and mounts 4lbs-ish

that makes about 22 pounds so far
add dual 2000mah batts, recvr, glass paint etc
I'm aiming for 25 lbs AUW.

With all this in mind I'm thinking a 31cc ryobi with bigger carb and reed valve mod swinging an
APC 20x8 at 7k might be getting a bit cheeky.
Maybe a DA 50 might be needed but means some serious cash for me at the moment.
Remember it's not an aerobat so violent amounts of power are not needed for scale performance.

Any feedback on this appreciated !

Best regards to all,

Gary.

EDIT: I just worked out wing area and remembered to factor in the area of the stub wing this time.
Total area = 2330 sq in or 16.18 sq ft
@ 25 pounds this gives a loading of 24.72 oz/sq ft
THIS is encouraging, almost too good to be true.
Hmmmmm better check my math one more time. I may get away with that engine yet.
Also i may have to keep a full hopper to stop it floating away

Cute daughter, but ugly plane. But I will also say it is very different so that may be a plus. So many of us have Cessnas, Cubs, Extras, etc. so a different kind of plane can be refreshing. I'm currently having a Piper Pawnee built with functional hopper. That's not too pretty a plane either but no one else seems to have one around here.

Weight is currently 20 pounds, only glass and paint required now.
At 20 lbs wing loading is only 19.77 oz/sq ft.

Not sure why the pt-17 was a crop duster in the post war era. All you need to do to get a crop duster is a little paint and add spray bars.

I was thinking of pulling off the red and recovering the elev., rudder cub yellow. sheeting the front cockpit adding canpoy on the back cockpit and putting a cub yellow strip about 4" wide across the top from the front down to the rudder. building a fake gas tank in the middle of the top wing.

And if I could find a good AGcat kit I would buy it .Tanker has a good kit but it is a 25 size 48" wing span I want a bigger one.

He flew for 20 years outside Monroe Louisiana

My grandfather bought a Sterman after the war and converted it for Ag work. He says that the reasons that they were so popular was cheap, durable, and hauled a good load after you switched the continental radial with a Pratt and Whitney. I may do the same with the Pt-17 ARF, but if you want a good Ag-Cat model and you like to build, here is a link to a page with the address for a Floyd Fitzgerald 1/5 scale Cat and the other link is a kit cutter that can cut you a full wood kit for it. I have a set of these plans and they look really good for the time period that it was designed. I knew a guy that built one many years ago and it was a beautiful airplane, he skinned and glassed it, added rivets, put fabric under the wings and tail, full cockpit, working doors and opening overhead canopy, and a scale hopper and spreader that was functional, and flying wires. Looked just like a real one, but he donated it to an Agri museam in Stuttgart, AR. If you are ever by that way you should stop in and see it.

Does anybody know anyone who build planes off of a set of 3-views? If anyone can help me please let me know. I have a set of 3-views for a crop duster but I am not a scratch builder.
Thanks,

Contact Frank J. Marcie Jr. fmarcie@accd.edu

He does plans from 3views. The APPROXIMATE cost is $15 per foot of model wingspan. If you need modifications that is extra (of course ).

Frank did a set of Transavia PL-12 SkyTruk/SkyFarmer plans for me. There was an extra charge because I specified the servos I was going to use and he designed the plans accordingly. The plans are all CAD drawn and his work is excellent.

I am having the kit cut and when it comes in I plan on doing a photo/build thread on it.

Where did you send to have your plans cut into a kit, How much did it cost, How scale was your aircraft, Is it going to have a spray system, and is the kit going to be a complete kit?

Sorry for all the questions!
Thanks,

Here are some photos I took at Hawkfield today of grumpE's 4*60 Bashed into a Thrush. He put a $20.00 smoke system in it, he found plans for here on RCU. It looks pretty darn good to me. He is going to route the Exhast under the wing sometime later.

Hi Omaha - Great shot's of grumpE's Thrush. I'm sure the crowd loved it. We had some great flying weather this weekend also (all except yesterday, decided to let loose and rain all day).

Just thought I'd share this, I thought it was kind of neat. I submitted some pics of my AirTractor 802F to Model Airplane News and they not only ended up posting the picin the June issue, but posted the video I sent in to prove that it actually flys.

Model Airplane News, Click Trips. Look down in June.

Greg,

Congrats on getting into MAN. The Airtractor looks great. GrumpE is talking me into bashing a 4*60 into a Airtractor. I'm still trying to decide if I want to bash my 4*40 kit into one. The fuse and wing are almost ready to start covering, so I need to decided soon.

Omaha

Thanks for getting these up Omaha!

Things have been crazy around here and I have not had the chance to post much. I need to tinker a bit with the smoke system but it is working pretty darn good. Thanks to minflyer for posting the schematics in the how to section. The plans work like a charm. I think I can improve my smoke voluem a bit and will be adding a pre-heater coil and a tube to get the smoke under the fuse. I am just dumping it out of the muffler for now. I wanted to make sure it worked and the plane flew before I did much finishing work.

I have been using smoke oil from the LHS for now. I want to experiment with some home brew too.

Any way it makes me SMILE and the others at our filed seemed to enjoy it too.

Eric

Glenn,

How does that RCV run? Have been interested in their whole line of engines as they are so unique compared to the mainstream. Get pics of her in the air and share, please.
