Was reading a review on the clipped wing cub and it was saying that "there are no laser-cut parts or interlocking construction techniques. Other than the wing ribs and a few plywood parts, most parts are not even pre-cut at the factory" Is this true for all the cubs, I am looking at getting one of the 1/4 scale ones but ain't particuarly keen on haveing to cut out all the formers and stuff....

I know on the website it says die-cut parts but to what extent?

Regards
Kyle

That review you refer to is mine and it applies to both full wing and clipped wing QUARTER scale Cubs from Sig.

Ed is right in his comments as pertains to the new, smaller, 1/5 scale Sig Cub which is a thoroughly modern design.

on the 1/5th scale cub by Sig,

some reinforcement on the fueslage ribs that the cardboard wing joiner is glued into is worth doing.

Mine got squirelly on takeoff and banged the left wing on the ground ripping this section to shreds.

If I had it to do over, I would double up these ribs with more plywood. This area is plenty strong for flying, but for mishaps it's the first thing to break.

It is true that the 1/4 scale version requires the cutting out of
some formers from printed solid stock. if I remember correctly
the balsa nose formers require cutting out and also the tail
feathers. This is no big deal if you have a scroll saw or band
saw but could be tedious with a hobby knife.
I do have to vouch for this kit because everything has fit very
well and it has been very easy to keep everything straight. I think
imo it is worth the extra effort in cutting out the formers required.
Also there is quite a bit of die cutting which I have found to be good quality.

Cool, think I will still consider this kit, Have access to a band-saw now so it shouldn't be a problem. Hmmmm only problem is the kit is a whole lot more than first thaught, hobby shops says "it's website isn't up-to-date" grrr :

Tailskid,

Yes, I am referring to the new 1/5th scale, all laser cut kit that can be built full or clipped wing. There is a picture of a yellow kit and Hazel's blue and white full scale on the box.

Great kit, easy to build and flies awesome, but not very durable, probably not intended to be.....

mjwest1117,

Have you built/flown one already? If so, any 'hints' for the rest of us?

Jerry

I have built the 1/4 scale Cub kit produced by Sig. You do have a few printed parts to cut out. It is a pain but not really a big deal at all. It's a builders kit! Nice flying airplane when completed!

Tailskid,

regarding the 1/5th scale version,

This is a totally laser cut kit and builds like a dream.

The landing gear is a pain unless you are really good with a soldering iron. Make sure the wires are totally clean before attempting to assemble them.
And like I mentioned above, beefing up of the fuse center section, where the wings attach is probably a good idea. Maybe some carbon fiber strips on the inside of the center section ribs would do the trick. If the wing tips bang on the ground, which is easy to do in wind with the full wing, the wing will try to "twist" these ribs up and in. This is in spite of the wing struts.

I really have no bad things to say about this kit. The fuse center section isn't really weak, just not durable. It flies like a dream. Just like all cubs it will tip stall if you get it really, really slow.

I had a saito .72 on mine and it fit the cowl perfectly mounted inverted with the chin scoop on the cowl left out. Pulled the cub with authority.

This kit was my first attempt at Koverall, and needless to say it was a learning experience. After 2 do-overs I finally had it looking acceptable and then I dork it. Kinda made it a love/hate thing with the plane. It was not the Koverall that was hard to work with for me, just the nitrate and butyrate dope.
